Coming to the BBS font of all knowledge for some advice.
I've been thinking about buying a car for a while, but was planning to bite the bullet early next year. My 10 year old VW Passat has been running like a dream with no issues.
Then Sunday, I put the key in the ignition and the car starts, but with a whistling sound. As I'm driving home, the internal lights start flicking and I can smell a bit of burning, but the car still drives perfectly. When I got home, I turned the engine off and tried to restart it. Nothing. No ticking, just nothing. All the lights come on, so there is no problem with the battery. I have a Halfords auto-centre at the end of my road and I asked them to wander down to look at it a couple of days back. They tried to jump it, but no good. They said they thought it could be the starter motor.
So I decided to bring forward my next car purchase, hoping that the new car dealer would kart it away and give me £500 or something for it so they can fix it themselves.
They are open to this idea, but the issue it, as it is undiagnosed, none of them will give me a firm offer. the VW sales guy said he knew a trader and he told me he would come and take it from me for £400. Problem is, I don't think I want the VW!
What is the best way for me to get the problem diagnosed at the side of the road? Or should I just buy the new car and take this out of the equation? If so, what is the best way to dispose of a non-starter and get a fair price. There is nothing wrong with the engine - it's a bloody good car. Any advice greatly received.
I'm in North West London by the way, so not local.
