So, all gaming BBSers of a certain age......

Is anyone playing the Beta? Is it actually playable on anything less than a cutting-edge monster desktop rig?

Hull's European tour

Will be interesting to see how there European ambitions go.

Failed to beat the Slovakians today but will be favourites to win back at the KC.

The longer they stay in the lower down the league they are likely to finish so hope they can go through.

Best bit is apparently Huddlestone not only missed a penalty but he smashed the rebound against the bar!

Winter Olympics 2014 Winner: srs9jps

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.

Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.

Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Local Business Sponsorship

Goodship,

I've recently been appointed the Youth Team Manager at Whyteleafe FC.

For those unaware, Whyteleafe are a club certainly on the up. The First team are back in the Ryman South Division following a successful season last year, and have also installed a brand new, state of the art 3G pitch to replace the grass pitch at Church Road. So, barring any extreme snow, it will be a cracking year for the club will all parts of the club benefiting from these superb facilities.

The Youth team, which compete in the Ryman Youth Central Division, are on the lookout for some sponsorship as we head into our 2014/2015 campaign.

If any local business is interested, please get into with me via PM. I would be more than happy to discuss in more detail!

Cheers,

Dave

Footballers Wanted (5 a side league)

I captain a team that plays in a Wednesday night five a side league near Canary Wharf tube station.

We had a few people leave the team this year due to moving out of London and for the upcoming season we need a Goalkeeper and an Outfield Player. All of the players are between 22-40 and of varying skill levels, but all are fairly competent playing.

If anyone's interested send me a PM. The next season will start in a couple of weeks and kick off times vary between as early as 6:15pm to as late as 8:00pm. The season will be between 10-12 games depending on how well do!

As for cost, normally we front up a deposit of £150 (split between 7 or 8 people usually), and then we split the remaining cost over the first 6 games (works out about £5 per person per game). After this the last 4+ games are free.

Taking a Baby to Sehurst

I was just wondering what the youngest age people have taken their kids to Selhurst..?

I have a 4 month old baby (he has already been in the programme) and i was going to take him in one of those slings when he is 6 months, ie beginning of September.

My mrs thinks it will be too noisey and he'll get the hump. I sit in Croydon Advertiser/Family Stand.

Just wondering what people's thoughts were? I might just take him to the Hamlet one day and see how he gets on.

Suggestion: Turn Barry Bannan into a LB

1- we need a LB

2- he's left footed and has played on the wing

3- he's tenacious and has the right temperament for the position

4- would guarantee him first team football

5- he's a bit small for what we expect from a CM but his ability to cross and make long range passes would be well served from the back

Rumour: Serge Gnabry Loan (Rejected)

According to Croydon Advertiser

To view the link you have to Register or Login

ARSENAL forward Serge Gnabry is understood to have rejected a move to Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old made 14 appearances for the north London outfit last season, scoring one goal and winning a penalty against Palace in Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Gnabry signed a five-year contract with Arsenal in October 2013 but with the Gunners signing Alexis Sanchez and wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back to fitness, he could be tempted with a move elsewhere.

The Germany youth international has been linked with Southampton, Newcastle, Sunderland and even Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Tony Pulis had reportedly taken an interest in the attacking midfielder as the boss looks to bolster his squad with signing at least three more players, including a centre-back before the season starts.

Palace have also been linked with Steven Nzonzi of Stoke City after he has reportedly handed in a transfer request in May for the second consecutive season.

The 25-year-old played under Pulis in his time at the club and has remained a key figure for the Potters, making 40 appearances last season as they finished two places above the Eagles in ninth.

Reports are also circulating that Palace and Swansea are interested in Southampton midfielder Jack Cork.

Cork could become the latest player to depart Southampton in what is turning out to be a miserable summer for Saints fans.

Suggestion: Alex Song

I just wonder if it might be worth asking Barça if they would loan us Song for a season? They have nine players for three positions and he has a contract until 2017. No club is coming in for him and maybe it would be worth it for them to pay most of his wages and have him playing regularly in a very visible League.

I need the fixtures in my Google Calender..

.. So I can view them on my Android phone, and my iPad.

Could a clever little sausage help a brother out and tell me how to do this?

Match Ticket Information Tickets, Loyalty Scheme, memberships, season tickets.....

Following lots of questions about ticketing, here is an update.........

Memberships - full details here :- To view the link you have to Register or Login . There will be more information sent out in the next day or so.

Season Tickets - These are still available but we have now sold over 16,000 and will stop selling soon so that we have a few thousand seats remaining to sell to home fans on a match to match basis.

Loyalty Points - All points that you have accrued over the last 2 seasons (ie 12/13 and 13/14) remain on your account. If you have bought a season ticket for 14/15 that's another 500 points. If you buy a basic silver membership you'll get 100 points and then 20 points per home game. Away games will also give 20 points but games outside London this season (except Liverpool and Man Utd) will give 40 points.

Arsenal - From 9am on Friday 1st August all remaining tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders who have at least 1500 points. At the moment they are on sale to those with 1700+ points. However Arsenal have still not actually supplied the tickets (don't blame Palace!!)

Home Matches - This season there will be 3 grades of match. The majority will be B grade but some, such as West Ham, will be A grade and some, such as Chelsea and Liverpool, will be A+. For the A grade games you don't have to buy a ticket to a B grade game as well but for A+ games you do. However you do need to be a Palace member or season ticket holder to buy tickets.

Away Season Tickets - The away season ticket is £25.00 for all age groups and allows home season ticket holders to attend all away fixtures. Complete the form with your card details and you will automatically be allocated a seat for each away game the day before tickets go on sale. You can opt out of attending a maximum of 3 games but have to commit to the remaining 16.

I hope that's helpful.

Steve Browett.

Steve Browett Summer break

Does anyone know when he will be returning to the site to take up his mantle as guru of all things Palace? Apart from him of course! He knows everything!

Moving To London

The eldest son of Mineagle may have the chance of a job offer in London. Being out of touch the question I ask is what is a good wage these days in London? He is on v good money here in Sydney , but I don't think we can compare like with the like.

Suggestion: Jonathan De Guzman

The Times states that he could be on his way out of Swansea, possibly to an unnamed London club.

Would love it it it were us. Great player.

Fleetlands FC

mardi 29 juillet 2014

Fellow Palce fans

Im currently acting as Fleetlands FC's PR/Commercial manager for those who dont know who Fleetlands are we are the founder members of the Wessex and Hampshire Priemier league,

We are currently looking for sponsorship for this season in return for logo on the home and away shirts and season long ad on our bill board at our round.

We are located in Gosport which is located on the south coast across the harbour from Portsmouth which attracts a lot of marine engineeering and related contracts.

Our players are good at the level were playing and we intend to get into the top five this season with the ambition to be promoted the season after.

For me as a Palace fan to have a sponsor linked to Palace in one form or another would be massive.

Ian Wright Wright Wright could have been missing in action if it wasnt for Greenwich Borough.

Were asking for £2500.00 ovno for the season long adverts

Just used the gas cooker in rented flat for the first time, something simple, however the knobs got very hot like too hot to touch and the top also hot, the food cooked fine, but it set the fire alarm off twice. Passed gas certificate etc., I have no manual. Is this a common thing when cooking with gas, usually cook with electricity or should I get someone to look at it.

Hi there,

One of my friends knows a young girl with Cerebral Palsy. She lives in Telscombe and hopefully enough money will be raised to get her a new wheelchair which will enable her to stand. She's a very popular girl locally and the Mayor has agreed to help - if anyone has any spare change it'd be much appreciated!

The idea is to give her some independence and freedom from being sat at all times.

Leisha harbors dreams of teaching and hopefully this will give her the confidence to go forward with this.

Anyone looking to play amateur footy?

Hi all,

Hope is ok to post this in here.

I play for a local amateur football club called Carshalton FC who play in Southen Amateur League on Saturday afternoons. We currently run 5 teams and are always looking for new players of all standards (literally all standards as long as you are reliable and pay your subs!). We play our home games at the pitches next to the Cricket Club at Beddington Park.

We currently have pre-season training every Tuesday from 7.15 at Beddington Park. If you fancy joining up for the season then please PM me and I can let you know any further details. It isn't absolutely essential you attend pre-season training if you have other commitments or anything.

If you are already part of a team or run a team and wanted to bring that team in to our club to play Saturday afternoons as one of our sides then that could be an option also. Benefits would be that is we have a committee to sort out administerial bits and bobs such as fixtures, plus we have pitches, a clubhouse, can provide kits etc.

Anyway - any questions or anything please let me know. If you know any mates who may be interested in this please do send them my way also - unfortunately we do have to accept non Palace fans to play for our Club too :(

Even Ch***ea fans :sob: :sob: :sob:

Cheers

Restaurants suggestions, group booking, Shoreditch/Hoxton/Old Street

Help!

I'm trying to sort out a place to eat for a group of 17 of us for this coming Saturday, and haven't had a chance to sort it as I've been away for the last two weeks.

We're playing footy at the 5 a side centre in Shoreditch at 12, then looking for a bite to eat after wards - any suggestions in and around Shoreditch/Hoxton/Old St that would fit 17 would be very welcome. Not overly fussed what type of food, but looking at a place to sit down with a beer or two, but prehaps isn't a pub, as we are going for a few pints afterwards from about three pm.

I just tried to book Red Dog Saloon on Hoxton Sq, but they can't take any further group bookings, so that rules that out. Might try Byron opposite, but I don't know the area that well.

Thanks in advance!

Open to the floor, go!

How many goals will our top scorer score?

Not bad as defensive back-up, in my opinion. Would prefer someone younger, but it's not a very high asking price.

Bluetooth speakers

Just bought myself a Sony SRS-X5.

Amazing piece of kit, and having bought it, I now find that I am no longer using my:

HiFi streamer in the bedroom

DAB radio in the bedroom

Internet radio in the kitchen

Computer audio in the study

I use it all the time - and everywhere, even in the garage!

Does anybody else have one (£100 models and above - not the cheap pocket ones), and how do you use it in daily use?

Same again please Barman!

Same again please with the 2014/15 season. I'm absolutely buzzing for this already, 17th or above again and I'll be happy!

What car do you drive?

As the title says, what car do you drive and do you like it?

Suggestion: Carl Jenkinson - loan option

Obviously, many on here will repsond to this suggestion with 'he's shit', as is ever so popular, apparently, for a player who isn't fashionable.

The facts are though that we need a couple of defenders and some with experience would be a plus. Jenkinson could go to RB with Ward at LB.

Arsenal have Debuchy and now Chambers in their squad, and jenkinson will surely be allowed to leave on loan.

He's 22 years old and has played 37 times for Arsenal, and he also has an England cap to his name.

He knows South London well have started life at Charlton and we would certainly be seen as a good club for him to join on loan for a year.

The last full back we signed on loan from Arsenal worked well...

Suggestion: Andrew Robertson

Someone please explain to me why we are not all over Andrew Robertson, the jock youngster playing left back at Dundee United to rave reviews?

We need a left back. He is a left back. We are located in the peaceful suburbs of Greater London. He needs to leave the cesspit that is Scotland. We have money. Dundee United have none.

Anyone know anything about him?

Suggestion: suggestions

Phil jones and chris smalling - van gaal wants 3 defenders. May open door for 1 of these to leave

danny rose. Decent left back, experienced and in our price range

micah richards - wants a move away from the etihad

wagnama - good player. May want a move away.

Clyne - come home!!

Fonte - excellent defender

Moses sinclair zaha - season long loan

crouch - big player to link up with gayle or campbell

medel - cut price move maybe?

Aeropress coffee (and other quality brewing me

Recently I've got into proper coffee (ie not instant). I've been using my < £100 coffee machine from Ikea or somewhere like that and while the coffee has been better (I do buy good, fresh beans from To view the link you have to Register or Login and To view the link you have to Register or Login ), I've seen a lot of websites saying that things like aeropresses, French presses etc are much better so I bought an Aeropress for £25. Anybody else use them on here? Most reviews are from pretty 'snobbish' places so I was wondering what people on here thought of them if you've used them.

I am aware this post reads like an Aeropress ad...

Zzzzzzzz

Following a schoolboy error in which I asked whether Frazier Campbell was the first Palace player with a Z in his name since Gonzalo Sorondo, i was wondering if the great minds of the BBS could come up with a definitive list of Palace Z players

1) FraZier Campbell

2) Wilfried Zaha

3) Besian Idrizaj (RIP)

4) Gonzalo Sorondo

I came up with 'Jazz' Richards, but that was a nickname wasn't it? (Plus he was shit) and 'Razor' Ruddock was a self applied nickname by a disgrace.

Any more Z's in Palace names?

Can anyone get in before Ian King?

Suggestion: Kelechi Iheanacho and Dedryck Boyata

Official BBS Fantasy NFL League 2014

It's baaaaa-ack!

Welcome to the 2014 BBS Fantasy NFL season. Confirmed managers listed below, including a couple of new faces. I deliberated over the idea of a live draft but only around half the managers voted for that option, so we'll keep with the traditional snake version for this year.

With that in mind, can all of you on the list below PM me with your email address (for draft purposes) and name of the NFL team you support? The latter will enable me to arrange the four divisions according to real-life rivalries, to some extent...

Benzhiyi

Blue Boy

Davematt

Pauldrulez

Oz Da II

Addiscombe Eagle

Funk Butter

Peagle

Jazman

Elliott

CPFC Born & Bred

LL Cool Steve

Absolution

SteveyHawking

Gingerob (new player for 2014)

Richj363 (new player for 2014)

On other change to note: thanks to an excellent idea from Paul, line-up positions have been tweaked in order to offer a greater degree of flexibility. Bear that in mind when it comes to drafting. The new set-up is:

QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, W/R/T, W/R/T, K, DL, LB, DB, 5x bench players.

As soon as I have everyone's email, we'll get the draft underway. We have just over a month, so it'll need to be a speedy one.

Play on, players.

Suggestion: Loic Remy

Liverpool gave him a medical and withdrew for a deal after a second opinion would it be worth a look at him? Is there something wrong or is it the scousers being picky?

Improving the ticketing experience

Last season I think the Mandy and the Box Office did a magnificent job given the big jump in demand the Premier League involved. But with memories of the stress surrounding Fulham at the end of last season I have a few simple improvements to suggest, and I suspect other people may have others too. So here goes:

1) Tickets should never go on sale at a time of day when there is no one in the Box Office to chase and rectify website problems.

2) We should be given at least one day's notice before tickets go on sale, not at the time (or after) they have gone on sale because this favours people with immediate access to the internet and discriminates against people at work who may not discover tickets have gone on sale (and maybe sold out) until much later in the day.

3) To that end can the club create a completely separate Ticket News mailing list so that ticket news doesn't have to wait for the general weekly email where it can sometimes end up being after the event. (Twitter is not a substitute.)

4) Can the ticket pricing details online, or in emails, match exactly what is going to appear in the drop-down menu on the cpfctickets website. On occasions the drop down menu has listed surprise stadium sections or surprise ticket types with mysterious, inexplicable names. (I've had to leave cpfctickets at critical moments to log onto the away club's website to find out where the different sections of the stadium are located.)

5) The only comment I have to make on the new cpfctickets website is to ask for the 'Collect from the Box Office' option to be reinstated as for Brentford the only option was for tickets to be despatched by first class post.

Buying, installing and setting up a NAS server ... ?

Any advice, tips?

I've been using an old laptop as a home server, connected to a 4TB external hard drive. Its worked well enough, as I've been able to use command prompt back ups over the network from the various family computers to back up stuff overnight through it to the external harddrive. I've also been able to use it to stream films from the external harddrive to my WD Live Hub.

However, this morning it looks like the laptop Harddrive has finally given up. It won't load windows and its making a funny whirring clicky noise. Sounds like a dead HD to me.

Therefore I'm thinking I might as well sort out something a bit better.

I'm looking at this To view the link you have to Register or Login

I think from what I can see I'll still need to buy a SATA drive to use it ... is that correct?

Also I used to broadcast internet radio shows using the old laptop, I assume I won't be able to use this for that purpose, but can anyone confirm?

All help, tips and knowledge gratefully received as I'm clueless really!

Thanks in advance. :)

USA - Crystal Palace on TV

Hi All.

I'm trying to find a way of seeing Palace play every week without having to connect to some obscure online stream from Mumbai or wherever. So, I called Time Warner Cable, my service, and have gotten nothing more than vague, incomplete answers. They tell me NBC Sports has EPL Game of the Week, but my question is "How do I see Palace every week?" No clue.

So... if anyone has any help for me, I'd really appreciate it. I'm tired of tuning in through wiziwig.tv and the like. THANKS!!!

5 teams (Palace) that will dramatically improve this season

According to the Huffington Post To view the link you have to Register or Login

We are going from 11th to 10th...!

The transfer window has only been open for a short period of time and bar the few managers who are yet to realise it is open at all, most teams have added a number of new faces to their rosters.

Looking at the completed transfers so far and the rumours that are actually realistic, there are a number of sides who are set to dramatically improve before the start of the new season.

Here are the top five and why they stand a good chance of getting better.

5. Crystal Palace

The word 'dramatically' won't necessarily be appropriate in Crystal Palace's case, but they will almost certainly improve for next season.

An 11th place finish is a bit of an overachievement for Palace, especially considering they were bogged down in the relegation scrap for a large portion of the season.

Having found form at the right time, however, next season could be a far more comfortable one for the London side.

Tony Pulis came in last season and was fantastic, knowing exactly what is required to keep a club in the Premier League.

The potential arrival of Gylfi Sigurdsson for a reported £8 million could well be enough to give them that extra goal threat and if Jason Puncheon continues the form he found at the back end of last season, then Palace could have a much easier campaign next time around.

Last Season: 11th

Prediction for this Season: 10th

phone line challenge

Hi,

Thought this section suited best as I need help from the wise and wonderful on the BBS please?

Background

I currently have fairly normal answerphone (Panasonic Phone KG-TG6524E) with DECT handsets. We also have a 'gate' phone attached. i.e. - sounds grander than it is but when they press a button the house phones ring and we can talk to them and let them in by selecting a key. Thisn is residential though, not business.

The model of the kit that connects the gate panel and the phones is the Videx ART380 N/UK. (as an aside, if we don't pick-up it then diverts to my mobile - which is quite cool).

I can dial the gate 'internally' from any phone handset too.

Problem

On occasion, when out, the call times out after I have answered it because either I or the caller get flustered/background noise etc. and we are cut off before we communicate fully.

So I would really like to be able to simply dial back into the gate remotely (as I already do internally). This happens enough for it to be worthwhile fixing.

So my question is how do I fix it so I can dial in externally and reach the gate, not the answering machine?

I think a small pabx (like) thing would probably handle it by monitoring the line and then diverting to the gate if it heard certain tones etc. or otherwise would pass to the answering machine. But I am guessing these are expensive and more to the point there may be a better way forward.

I did wonder if there was an answering phone that in itself offered a simply bypass function on touchtone but as I am 'making this stuff up now' I thought - aha ask the oracle known as the BBS.

So anyone know anything about good old fashioned telephony and this stuff that can nudge me in the right direction?

Hampton and Richmond.

Anyone have any information on what sort of team Palace are sending down there today considering they also had another fixture last night?

Robin Friday - the greatest footballer you never saw

I've just come across this guy. He played professionally for Reading and Cardiff for 4 seasons in the 70s. George Best has got nothing on him! Hard playing, hard drinking and hard as fck to pull metal spikes out of his body. Despite his short playing career and retiring at 25 he is in both Reading and Cardiff all time legends lists and was regarded at the time as good enough to play for England if he could get his life straight.

Wikipedia gives a good summary: To view the link you have to Register or Login

Amongst all his exploits this one makes him a Palace legend:

The Londoner returned to the team for the away match at Brighton & Hove Albion on 29 October 1977, with Cardiff once again in the relegation zone, in 20th place on goal difference.[102]

Friday was marked during the game by Mark Lawrenson, who so frustrated the Cardiff forward with his close attention that Friday waited for Lawrenson to attempt a slide tackle and then kicked him in the face.[11] After receiving a red card, Friday left the ground with the game still going on; according to legend, before leaving he broke into the Brighton dressing room and defecated in Lawrenson's kit bag.

:lux:

Apparently there's going to be a film made this year too, hope the Lawrensen scene is in it..

Check Your Direct Debits!

Just spent an hour on the phone to Southern Water, incompetent wankers.

Moving past the fact that they've sent someone to install a water meter 4 times in 3 years, to find every time they can't, they've tried to hike our direct debit from £42 to £74. Thieving criminals. I've worked out that £37 is about what we should be paying, so they're trying to steal 100% more than they are entitled to. After speaking to them and trying to get them to explain what I owe and how the DD is calculated, it seemed neither I or they understood their system. Eventually I got out of the girl I spoke to that I can instruct the amount that they take, so I did. No doubt I'll have more discussions with them next year then...

I've also noticed this with Gas and Electricity (who fortunately can be smacked down online) and the AA trying to "upgrade" us to platinum membership every year. We got a £500 rebate from British Gas two years ago after overpaying.

So check your Direct Debits and make sure you're not paying too much. These companies are thieves and cannot be trusted.

Is it selfish to not want kids?

Wanted to open up to the Good Ship BBS about this issue,

I'm fast approaching the time in life where it almost becomes expected by my friends/family that i should be entering a new chapter in my life which is to settle down and start a family.

I am curious as to why it seems so important to third parties that i help produce a child or two. Parents asking questions like "when will you make me a grandma?" & comments like "isn't it about time you started a family of your own"? Is it selfish to at least question whether or not bringing life into the world is a good idea?

If you were to read the Daily Fail, the world is full of broken families, parents lacking in responsibility, millions of children are not raised in safe environments, bad schooling/teachers means that a high proportion of children are illiterate and inumerate, then they grow up to appear on the Jeremy Kyle show at 14 where they are already on their second DNA test and all on benefits. (Of course this is a glamourised perspective but I'm sure some people know someone who's a "dead beat" father or parents that have been classified as "unfit" or had to make a call to the NSPCC or social services or whatever)

There is fear attached to me, as a human, which is "would i be a good parent?" "Would i be able to handle the responsibility?" "Do i have enough job security/finance in place to support a child or two?"

I would hope that all parents would at least consider these sorts of questions before thinking about bringing a new life into the world but the more i see in my local area and talking with friends, it seems that there is becoming a more relaxed attitute to the overall responsibility from the "gap-year" generation to having kids. Women in nightclubs that boast about having three kids already but instead of being at home looking after them, have passed them onto the grandparents and vocalise how she will continue to live the out-going lifestyle of mass-drinking and inconsequential/meaningless sex (which potentially leads to baby number four). I find this ever increasing mentality quite frightening.

The expense side of things is also quite alarming from a non-parent looking at the items in the Mothercare catalogue. It's endless the amount of materialistic things that apparently "your baby" needs in order to survive and be cared for properly. Sure, some of it is commercial BUT if you weren't to provide a safe cot, dirty clothes, fresh baby milk or not change nappies frequently, i'm pretty sure the NSPCC would come knocking.

Do you become seen as "less of a person" to others if you hit 50 and you tell people you are childless? Do people look at you strangely and ask "how did you get to 50 without having a child? What's wrong with you?" If you have been married for say 10 years and haven't produced a child, why do third parties seem really concerned about this situation? They seem to question whether there are "problems" with having children, dreaming up whether the male has a low count etc. Why is it a third parties business if a couple decide to marry but not to have kids?

Is it honourable or a cop out to just hold your hands up and say "i couldn't handle the responsibility of raising a child so decided not to create one" - Enough people's lives have been ruined by a poor upbringing, why would i want to add to that statistic?

Is it selfish to say "I am barely keeping my head above water as it is, in terms of finances (mortgage/bills etc) then add on rail fares and other expenses, so why burden myself with a child"?

A friend of mine has a child at school which incurs fees of £4,000 a term, that is their choice and if they can afford that, all power to them, but the figure is big chunk of money that is scary, at least to me.

I probably waffled on long enough but are these concerns legitimate?

I really don't like QPR

It just leaves such a sour taste that they were able to cheat financial fair play, win promotion and are now going head first into more extreme spending.

Is that really the example we want for other clubs of how to get to the promised land? It really does leave me feeling flat when you see clubs and fans reveling in this kind of approach.

Their fans on Twitter taking the piss out of us after they bagged Caulker. Jesting he wanted to play football not rugby - so very naive. Anyone else just worry that there is now a whole generation of football fans who actually is completely oblivious to the potential future impact of extreme over spending on transfers and wages. I hate to see it happen to any club, but I really hope they learn their lesson in the worst possible way. It's pretty disgusting that they can get away with buying their way to premiership survival (if they manage it). The rules are far too soft on clubs, it's not an even playing field, it's all down to having a rich foreign owner. I just love that we are club with spirit and heart, without fans all high on the drug of excessive spending.

Javier Saviola is targeting a move to England after agreeing to part company with Olympiakos. The 32-year-old moved to Athens last summer on a two-year deal from Malaga, but he could finally be heading to the Premier League. Swansea and Queens Park Rangers are among the clubs understood to be taking a keen interest in Saviola.

Could this be one for us to look at? However I was always under the impression that he has never really lived up to his potential. Did he do any good in Greece?

Best of all the game between Mayo and Galway and the ensuing Craic!!

Was hoping to post pics of game and crowd but it keeps "failing" so will try later

Palace Player

Hi all,

I could not find an existing Palace Player thread.

Does Palace Player have an iphone app? I know there used to be the Football League app, but now we are in the Prem, what is on offer?

Thanks

Purchasing a VPN - recommendations?

As I am moving abroad in a few weeks, I have realised I may need a VPN to access the same UK resources online that I may not be able to get abroad.

Does anyone use a VPN? I was thinking of going with Hide My Ass as they have a sale on at the moment which works out at only £35 for the year.

Any recommendations?

Humour: Stories for Richard Cawley to copy and paste into the paper

As he requested after he saw himself described as "someone who steals a living"...

@RichCawleySLP: Just noticed on one Palace forum I'm being described as someone "who steals a living". Wait until I get home - my wife is taking liberties.

@RyWalCP: Confirms he uses the BBS as a source

@RichCawleySLP: @RyWalCP I do. I just need a thread entitled: "Stories for Richard Cawley to copy and paste into the paper". Can you help?

So shall we use this thread for Rich to copy and paste things into his paper ?

I'll start:

Palace in late bid for Isco to put a spanner in Liverpools plans.

Suggestion: Nick Powell

Cannot see this as a suggestion on the BBS yet, but read this morning that he was on a list of players deemed surplus to requirement by LVG (along with Wilf) and wondered if he might suit as an attacking midfield option. Cannot be on huge wages as he only went from League 1 to them, and cannot see a huge fee required for a player unwanted?

Did well at Wigan last season and still only 20.

Should Wayne Rooney be the new England captain?

Rumour: Simon Tibbling

According to this we have scouts who are looking at Simon Tibbling. He's a young midfielder who plays for Djurgarden in the Swedish allsvenskan. Think he's a holding midfielder.

I don't know much about him because Djurgarden are the Brighton of Swedish football.

Number 10 role

Ispired by the Palace thread but the role at Number 10 is sadly linked to party politics so whilst it might be hard, who do you think has the ability to represent Britain on the world stage.

Is it possible to take party Politics out of the equation and look at personality of the candidates?

Discussion: Danny Agger out of favour at Liverpool

With Danny Agger not 1st choice at Liverpool, and the eoin out he wants away for first team football, could he possibly a potential loan target, I know with his current maret value in the region of £15M he's slightly out of our range, but a loan deal with option to make permanent where Liverpool pay a lump of his salery while on loan would be exciting to see,

Yes I know he would prefer to play European football,

Just interested to hear what others think

Number 10 role

As we're not signing Sigurdsson seemingly and Pulis obviously keen to strengthen that particular area, with Chamakh perhaps moving up front, who would you most like to be seen given a proper chance in that area from the current squad?

Sports disappointment of the year 2014

I think we should have a new prize at the end of this year for the Sports disappointment of the year.

So many candidates this year:-

England Football team

England Cricket team

Chris Froome

Mark Cavendish

Andy Murray

Suggestion: DeAndre Yedlin

The nifty RB who played for the USA in the World Cup.

However I'm not suggesting we bring him here as a RB because I though defensively he made a few errors, however going forward he was excellent.

I would bring him here as a Winger. He has incredible pace and isn't to bad at crossing the ball either. Not sure about his end product but I would absolutely buy this guy.

Suggestion: Ukraine crisis - potential loan players?

Just read this story on BBC Sport:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I wonder whether due to the fighting in Ukraine, especially in and around Donetsk, if they will be loaning or selling players on with the Ukrainian league looking to be postponed, due to the current conflict.

Some of the players mentioned in that article are pretty decent, and would do a job in the Premier League.

I rate both Fred (not the slow unfit World Cup squad Fred) and Alex Teixeira highly.

Would we stay up with current squad?

In my opinion YES we would. Solid back line, even with Ward LB & Mariappa RB. Realistically only KG and Jerome have left from our matchday squad.

We could do with improving our attacking options and another CM, LB is obviously needed and I am sure will be added, but I dont get the panic on here for us to buy.

TP has implemented a playing style that makes us tough to beat, thats not going to change. I think we all know deep down we will have a stronger playing squad at the end of the window too...

My point being, even if (god forbid) we dont buy anyone at all, I would still say we will survive, maybe not comfortably, but we would not be in the worst 3 teams in the prem.

Cliques in Cricket clubs

dimanche 20 juillet 2014

I posted the below in the cricket thread last week to gauge people's thoughts but it either got lost there or hit a nerve with the cricket folk:rolleyes: Anyway another unpleasant experience today leaving a child who has been selected for county trials not wanting to play the game again. I'm not sure whether it's just the club or whether cliques are rife at cricket clubs but would be interested in people's views so I can advise a child what to do.

Hope it's ok I post a subject here on cricket instead of starting a new thread? But has anyone had any experience with kids cricket and do they find the officiating as biased if not more than in kids football.

My eldest has been playing matches for 2 seasons now. This is officially their first season at U10s but last year him and his good mate were selected for the year up. I don't get too involved as I coach 2 of the football teams from the same club as the cricket, so really can't commit to help out any more. When I'm able to go I often get the snidey remark pointed in my direction about how more civilised cricket is than football to which I respond with a 'yeah'(roll eyes)

Anyway I've been shocked at how bad and biased (cheating) the umpires are at kids level. We were at a competition yesterday and had to win the last game by 10 runs to progress. They use barrington rules so you get -6 if you lose a wicket. Anyway there were 2 run outs not given one was which was clear as day light on the last ball which meant we would've won buy 10 runs. A caught and bowled given a no ball as waist height. It was thigh height and actually given by the wrong umpire. Kids crying at the end and very angry yet some pompous dad saying that's cricket boys and you accept the umpires decision, it's not football. I then catch a conversation with the umpire and opposition team at the end congratulating each other and the umpire acknowledging that their slim defeat would guarantee them through.

Also had an incident last month where my boy was told on the last ball by both umpires that his team was leading by one and just needed to avoid losing his wicket on the last ball for victory. He defended the ball and the team ran off celebrating only to be told that they got the scores wrong and they had in fact lost by 1. So did they do the gentleman thing and replay the ball.......of course not.

So I've been left with a bitter taste in my mouth from my experiences over the last year, specially as I keep being told what a civilised game it is. Has anyone else had experiences like this or is this a one off, or are our team and officials too bloody nice?

Tesco houses

Housing, the cancer that cripples the uk. With millions of people on housing waiting lists, private rent rates kept artificially high and house prices at 695billion per square foot theres an undeniably deep abyss facing the uk population.

How are people going to get a roof over their heads?

But don't worry people help is at hand! No not from cameron, clegg or Miliband but from Tescos.

Yes thats right kids Tescos are proposing to build houses on the zillions of acres of land they hold in unused land banks.

Put me down for one finest house and another two value flats to rent out. One to pay my mortgage and the other to keep me in old age.

After years of flats being built with a Tesco's at the bottom i guess this marks a departure.

And how will the other supermarkets respond? Will we get the Sainsbury's studio or the Morrison's maisonette?

Will it be double clubcard points on every house purchased?

Monty Python at the O2

I'm their biggest fan but watched the live show on Gold and it was absolutely shocking. I know they don't care since they have admitted they are only doing it to get money for their divorces etc but it was shockingly bad. Don't know why they did new stuff since it doesn't work nowadays and everyone wants to see the old stuff.

Really bad and disappointing :(

Feel for the people that wasted their money

Black Keys at the O2

I've got lower tier seats for this in March. Never been to the O2 before and have heard mixed reviews.

Are people likely to be standing in the lower seated area or will we be battered down by stewards?

If they are strict on sitting down, does anyone know if it's possible to swap for two seats in the standing bit? Lower seats and standing are both sold out and are of a similar price.

Discussion: Trimming the CPFC squad

With Campaña now going to Sampdoria, who else do we need to move on this this summer?

My thoughts are:

- Garvan

- McCarthy

- Ramage

- Dobbie

And maybe also:

- Jerome Thomas

- Stuart O'Keefe

Arthur Wait Block X

Hi all,

Boring question I know :S::S:but for the first time i've brought a season ticket for the Arthur Wait (have been in the lower HOL for years).

I purchased block X as I was told our seats have a lot of leg room and no one in front due to a walk way or stairwell. I looked at pictures online and couldn't see this. Is there a break in rows in Block X at all?

I ask I could have been nearer the centre circle but chose X due to the leg room.

Thanks!

German Grand prix 1 PM - Tip

Hi all,

On skybet for the grand prix today I have found a price of 5/6 on for the winning margin to be 6 seconds or greater.

With Rosberg first and Hamilton last and the speed difference of the Mercs to the other cars I see this as fantastic value.

This season 5/9 races this bet would have come in but with the grid the way it is the only way this could lose is a late safety car.

A smaller tip would be on betfair for Hamilton to finish on the podium @ 11/10.

By the end I see the top 3 as Rosberg, Bottas and Hamilton. I wouldn't be surprised if Rosberg wins with over a 20 second margin.

Good luck if anyone gets on it.

Mini Roundabout stale mate protocol?

samedi 19 juillet 2014

Couldn't find an anorak forum to post this to, so went in general chat, but I need to know what to do when 3 cars arrive at a mini roundabout at exactly the same time. I currently pull straight out whilst doing wanker signs to both my left and right. What does everyone else do?

Bundesliga Fixtures

I'm trying to organise a Stag Weekend next Easter in a European city that will allow us to see some football. One option is Dusseldorf.

On Friday 3rd April 2015 Borrusia Dortmund are scheduled to be at home to Bayern Munich.

Does anyone know if fixtures in Germany are liable to be shifted around for tv as they are in the UK? If so when will the date of this match be confirmed?

Thanks:p
