When are private emails not private ?

There is currently a thread on World of Football about this story....

Now I do not want to replicate it on here but would like to pose a question that arises from it.

From what I can make out the leaked correspondence was from an email exchange that was taking place on a non-work related email account. If we accept that the person who leaked this was justified in doing so based on its sexist content would this then mean that perhaps GCHQ should be tasked with monitoring all private emails so that all incidences of people sharing comments and jokes that could be deemed to be racist, sexist or homophobic be monitored by Government and appropriate action taken ?

Many of you seem convinced, wrongly in my opinion, that offensive comments on social media such as Facebook and so on are worthy of Government intervention and even people being given custodial sentences so would you now extend that to private emails as well ? Perhaps with a public interest clause inserted so somebody who is in a public role having their private correspondence monitored ?

Please note that this is NOT about this specific case which is covered on the other thread but rather the wider implications of these emails being published and what that means for future privacy concerns.
