While trying to suppress my tears that M&S profits are down, a thought entered my mind about why profits are so important.
Throughout history man has prospered where people live together, work together and contribute to the local community. These scenarios unfortunately appear to have all collapsed due to the greed of outsiders or within.
So, as long as a company is producing something people need and making enough money to cover operating costs and to pay a decent salary to the employees, why does it even need to make profits? Does every company really need to be bigger and more cost efficient all the time?
I confess I know little about this but wondered what would happen if all UK Companies handed over all their profits for a year to go straight into a fund for central infrastructure like schools, hospitals, and affordable housing.
