Here’s another “crazy and mad” thread. Want to keep the few fans I have left happy. Anyway, I’ve been open that Joa Andersen has been my POTY for the past 2 seasons, since he arrived in fact. Guehi is the better defender because he has the mobility to get there, which also helps him defend better in one-vs-ones. And he is younger. But I am in no doubt that Andersen is the better all round player because he is a cultured footballer. His technique on the long passing is incredible and helped set up far more attacks than we’ve ever managed to do playing through midfield. But that technique is not limited to passing, he can cross well and he is as pure a striker of a ball as we’ve seen from a centre back since Coleman imho.
I am not saying he should play up front. But he should be freed of the shackles to mark in a conventional back 4, something that doesn’t suit him in any case. He should be put on the ball as much as possible, and allowed to roam forward more, like a traditional sweeper. I don’t see him as a DM because he lacks the ability on the half turn, and the mobility you need for the position imho. But I think we could get more out of him if he had freedom to express himself further up the pitch. I’m not saying we even need to play a back 5 - it could simply be the case that we play a back 3 when he is allowed to move forward. I’d be interested to hear people’s constructive thoughts about how we could get more out of him. Because he is a serious footballer. He is a leader and in terms of technical ability for a centre back he must be verging on world class I reckon in terms of that facet to his game.
