Two matches against each-other. Home/away rule; Away teams bets have to finish before midnight (UK time) on Saturday evening.

Minimum odds limit 1.2.

We are mainly using BM rules, that means for example that;

Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

The contestants will be seeded for the group draw (based on overall performances in BM competitions).

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.

Remember fair play. Duplicating you’re opponents bets are not allowed.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Rumour: Boateng / O’Brien loans

Joey Barton is making a bold bid to sign Crystal Palace centre half Jake O’Brien for Bristol Rovers.

Barton wants O’Brien to join his side on loan and he is offering him a better chance of first team football than rivals Barnsley.

Crystal Palace are sending under-23 skipper Malachi Boateng to Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park on loan.

Midfield sitter Boateng will be allowed out to get game time after being part of the squad that went to Australia for a pre season tour.

Boateng can develop with Owen Coyle’s team and return to Palace with more experience under his belt.

One of our own - Bill Boakes RIP

It is with deep regret and sadness to report the death of lifelong Palace fan,
Bill Boakes. Known on the BBS as "Freddie Kurz", many will remember his
rather unusual style of formatting his posts by pressing the return bar whilst
writing which seemed to wind some people up no end.

He hadn't posted for many years, in a large part I suspect due to his diminished
eyesight which is a shame as he was a font of (detailed) Palace knowledge, his
first game being in 1936, although a rip-storming 3-3 against Chelsea in 1944,
with Freddie Kurz bundling the 'keeper over the line for a 'good' goal well and
truly got him hooked.

To the end Bill was endlessly fascinating (and sometimes frustrating). His
love of Palace was without equal and his recall to events, people and detail
simply sublime. I'm sure he still exists in the archive on here from when he used to post.

A fellow Palace fan and friend has been filming Bill for some time now. Bill
was as lucid in his thought despite his sight problems to the end. He was an
invaluable resource for the Crystal Palace fans' Centenary Project and I
know Alan thought the same for the Centenary DVD which Bill featured
on.

He'll be missed by many. Farewell to a true Palace legend.

Speaking about his time under Warnock and Hillsborough etc.

Always wondered what happened with him - he was so promising, a teenager who popped up out of nowhere and immediately started scoring goals, but his career took a pretty sharp downwards turn and he was playing non league within a couple of year of leaving us. Seems to have been on a bit of a world tour of different clubs after that and is still playing now at 32 in the Kuwaiti league!

Crystal Ball: 2022/23 Season: First Six Kiwicumulator

Our tenth successive season in the the top division starts on Friday 5th August, an amazing achievement.

As part of the Crystal Ball competition, we have two Kiwicumulators, one for the first six matches and another for the last six matches.

Credit to hughff from New Zealand who created the*Kiwicumulator*many years ago.

Predictions must be in before KO on the first of these first six games, i.e. just before kick-off on at 8pm on Friday 5th August.

Just Win/Draw/Loss for this: no need to predict the score, scorers or attendance. There will be individual threads for each match for that.

If FIFA decide to be the owner of this they will rake it in but I can't see a better game - it'll take some organisation to give it direction if they think that outsourcing from cottage software houses is the way to go.

Welcome everyone to the new season of the Crystal Ball - a chance for you to show that you have your finger on the pulse of Palace results.

In case you forgot, here's how it works:
AT some point before a game, someone will start a new thread - you don't need to wait for us to do so; feel free to start your own. In the thread you post a prediction of the score of the Palace match. You can also predict the scorers, and the attendance. After the match, our tireless team tally the totals.

Points are scored for:
1. Correctly predicting the score of the match = 3 pts Additionally, if you correctly predict the score (not just the result), you will also get 1 point for each scorer you correctly predict.
2. Correctly predicting the result of the match but with the wrong score = 1 pt
3. Closest to predicting the attendance figure = 2 pts. Additionally, everyone whose prediction is within 100 gets 1 point (therefore 3 points if you were closest and within 100). If you are within 101-200 you will get a bonus point. (A bonus point only counts at the end of the season in the event of a tie).

Cup matches are based on the result of the match before any penalties. Therefore if the match goes to penalties then the match is judged to be a draw, regardless of who wins the shootout.

Please note the latest allowable time to post predictions is a minute prior to kick-off time. However, for an attendance punt or the scorers to be valid, the post must be made at least an hour before the kick off.

There are also pre-season and mid-season final position prediction threads and first and last six games Kiwicumulators that can score points. Furthermore, the Crystal Ball scoring team may, purely at their own discretion, award bonus points on other occasions - for example, honestly handing back points you didn't earn scored a bonus in the past.

Shed Base Help

Looking to get a shed base done in the back garden. Concrete/sand/slab mix.

Some things to consider:

1)Shed size is 7ft by 9ft 6, so base required is approximately 2.8m by 3.3m ( space left around the side)

2)Garden is on the lower ground of the property, with no access unless going through the house from the ground floor and coming down

3)Shed assembly required

I'm getting quotes between £1800 without shed assembly and £2100 with shed assembly.

Are these prices normal? Is the lack of access really costing me that much?

Due to my skills only going as far as assembling Ikea furniture, I'm not confident to have a go myself, considering the chalky, rocky, hard soil and getting everything level.

Anyone got any recent experience of quotes for similar work?

We are getting some more quotes to try and average out and see what's reasonable, but really struggling with the prospect of needing £3k to get a shed up (Shed, assembly and base).

If that is the going rate, will need to save a lot more.

Crystal Palace Under-21s will take on European opposition including Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the Premier League International Cup.

By virtue of their impressive finish in the Premier League 2 last season, Paddy McCarthy’s Development side will take part in the competition, which is returning this season after a two-year hiatus during the COVID pandemic.

The Eagles have been drawn against PSG, Hertha Berlin, Dinamo Zagreb and SC Braga, with all games to take place in south London.

I thought I should start a thread on a player who we know has talent and as we know has scored goals against Palace. A couple of years ago it would have been wishful thinking, but now?
I suspect PV SP and DF have the recruitment team doing the numbers and personal profile on Dele. At 26 he has 6+ years of top level football in him. The instalment transfer Everton did would work for us.
I suspect there’s something in his personal life that’s caused the fall off in form, his class is obvious. We’ve done a good job on Butland to get him back to playing near his best and with a smile, who’s to say we can’t do the same with Dele.
Just imagine a match day squad with Zaha, Eze, Dele, Olise, JPM, Edouard, Doucoure, plus our defence is quite an inviting prospect.

Last season for me was his best I've seen from him at the Palace ... Pat himself is on record as saying that due to his frame Cheikhou would be able to play on for longer than average at the top level.

Samsung fridge trouble

Any fridge knowledge out there peeps?

Was away for weekend and there was a power cut for 8 hours.

Came back to puddle on floor and defrosted food in freezer.

Its one of those 4 door Samsung jobs from 2018 with the rubbish ice maker.

Temp readings were silly high, like 12/15.

Emptied it, mopped up, and left it off for 30 mins.

Fridge seemed to be making a demand for water from the water line every now and then, presumably for the ice maker, and warm unit couldn't possibly make ice, so turned ice maker off and closed off the water supply.

It eventually got back to 2c fridge, but freezer doesn't get below -4c and when it gets there or when any door is open for 30 secs or so, the light blinks off, the display briefly goes 88 88 and then things sort of restart.

I tried the FF Force Freeze mode, but it doesn't freeze, gives up after a while.

I thought it couldn't be the Starter Relay as the fridge is working and staying cool even with the occasional 88 88 restarts.

Neighbour reckons it is the compressor, any other thoughts?

I want to take the inside panel off the freezer and see how that all looks.

We hovered off those coils at the back down low, they weren't too bad anyway.

I assume the fan near the compressor spins up for the compressor to be doing anything, but I can't remember if it was or not when doing the hoovering.

Song suggestion for the new season

So I was singing along merrily to myself, this great tune from the Eurythmics. Don't know why, it just came to me. And then I though about what a great Palace song it could be, in our recent era of exciting young talent, exciting football, and all-round good-vibes.

Former Germany striker Uwe Seeler, one of the greatest players in his country's footballing history, has died aged 85.
Seeler scored 43 goals in 72 games for the then-West Germany and featured at four World Cups.

Tourist visa/student visa for the UK query

Don't know if anyone can help but I guessed it was worth a shot.

Chilean couple both have student visas to study PdD's at LSE. They have flights to arrive in the UK on August 18th but one student visa kicks in on Aug 19th and the other Aug 26th.

Could they arrive on tourist visas for the few days before the student visas become valid? I am assuming yes, but does anyone know what, if anything they have to do to be registered on the student visas? I remember many years ago I had a similar situation in the US and had to leave and re-enter the country to get my tourist visa entry closed and my working visa entry recorded. I'm guessing something similar could be done in this case. A day trip to Calais once the student visas are valid?

Anyone have any experience/knowledge of this?

Soffits Fascias and guttering replacement

I need to get my soffits, Fascias and gutters replaced quite urgently, and was wondering if the BBS had any suggestions. The existing soffits are asbestos, and are being removed by a licenced contractor next week. They had previously said they were going to do the reinstatement as well, but have now said that they are unable to do this, and will just be doing the removal.

This leaves me needing to find a reliable contractor asap. Of course, the adjacent properties will still have the old asbestos soffits in place, so the job would need to be done by someone professional enough not to disturb those. On the upside, the asbestos contractors are leaving the scaffolding in place while the reinstatement gets done, so that's at least something.

Does anyone on the BBS have any recommendations for someone who can take on the job in the next few weeks. Any recommendations would be be much appreciated

A fire has started in the Shirley Hills near Croydon this afternoon with a huge plume of smoke rising up into the sky over the wooded area.

Helicopter footage from BBC News shows the normally green area blackened by fire as it burns beyond a lookout point in the hills which are home to numerous plants and animal species not found elsewhere in London.

One resident who lives nearby the hills wrote on Twitter: "I See Addington/Shirley Hills is up in flames around the viewpoint, don't know if it will reach the tram tracks but these are not far away."

Women's Refuge, Park Lane, Croydon

I spent some time there as a kid in the mid 70's and still have very vivid memories of it. I am wondering given the location of it if any BBS members were unwilling lodgers at the refuge around the same time.

I always remember a very kind woman called Anne who worked there giving my mum a break and taking me home with her for a couple of nights. I think it was Orpington as it was a lot of houses around a big green and she had 2 sons much older than me.

Perhaps it’s from the years of getting 1% raises and barely being able to pay bills. Maybe it’s because nurses are asked to do more and more with less. Maybe it’s from the terrible staffing ratios. The reasons are honestly endless.

Let’s start caring about nurse retention, fair wages, safe staffing, etc.

Let’s not get to the point where you need a nurse and there isn’t one to spare.

World Fragile X Day

Apologies for the self indulgent thread, but thought some may be able to help by sharing the link to this short awareness video I made to highlight a condition called 'Fragile X syndrome', that my daughter suffers from. She features in the video.

Awareness of Fragile X is so important as it will bring more resources towards further research, which means we get closer to effective treatment and even a cure for sufferers like my little girl. It really isn't the stuff of science fiction or wishful thinking; scientists believe it is now very much within reach.

Treatment discovered is also likely to impact other neurodevelopmental disorders like Autism and Alzheimer's disease. Fragile X is actually considered to be the best key we have to solving Autism.

So if people are able to share the following video link on their social media platforms to help spread the cause, it will be so very much appreciated.

Also open to any ideas about how I could spread the video message further.

Expanding patio doors in the heat

Opened some plastic patio doors at the girlfriend''s for a party (they aren't usually opened, and now they don't shut!

Have tried giggling them, waiting until it's cooler,WD40 but no joy.

I'm told it's a common problem. Any solutions??

Bathroom fitting

Very exciting topic alert!

Anyone had a bathroom done recently?

We are looking to have ours done, it is pretty small really but does need tipping out and redoing (including ceiling/lights etc) we've had our first quote and nearly fell off my chair!

So any ideas as to a rough price tag for this which is reasonable? Am I simply ignorant or is our quote on the high end? Not mentioning numbers so that I can get a response first :)

Read an article in the newspaper today that his daughter Isabella lives in Croydon and visits regularly.

Given that he:
1.spends a lot of time in the country.
2. Is a big football fan (includes Beckham as a mate)
3. Proximity to Palace.

More significantly, they are turning to Russia for a favour on their oil needs. They are a member of our commonwealth, and we, tand the government seem to be sitting on hands.

We help a non commonwealth country like Ukraine, but when it comes to Sri Lanka, complete radio silence. If they are are eventually tied up with Putin in understandable desperation, this will have significant impact on both our commonwealth and the region in general.

Tiemoué Bakayoko reportedly visited the Milan headquarters today to explore a possible exit this summer.

The 27-year-old French midfielder returned to Milan on a two-year loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy clause attached last summer, but he hardly made an impact last campaign under Stefano Pioli, making only five Serie A starts.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, Bakayoko is now keen to find a new adventure after struggling for consistent minutes with Milan last season. One of his agents is currently in the Lombardy capital and a meeting could be scheduled with the club’s management in the next few days. The player himself paid the directors a visit today to highlight his intentions.

Although both parties are happy to part ways, things won’t be so simple; due to the fact that Bakayoko still has a year left on his loan deal, Milan will need to negotiate with Chelsea to try and find a solution that satisfies everyone.

In addition, should the Frenchman leave the Rossoneri this summer, they would not benefit from the Growth Decree law, which is only triggered for players who stay at least two years.

So I have a blood sugar monitor and used it today after not eating for 8 hours plus. It's one that uses plastic strips and bit of blood from finger.

I did it twice..first was 6.3, (mmol think it is) which is "pre diabetes".

Second time it just said low.

Would that be cause for concern?

Gardening question - Empty borders to fill...

I have completely empty borders to fill and I'm not sure what to plant. It's a garden that gets lots of sunshine. A mixture of of greenery and colour would be nice.

Notice Period

Last week I started a new job which i thought was for me.Three days in and I could not stand it.The manager who hired me was only a temp manager which he did not say, on the second day he told me a couple of the staff are set in their own ways and if anyone says anything untowards dont be afraid to tell him.This set off alarm bells and talking to other people in the organisation it soon became clear that the job was very tedious so I wanted out.

At the weekend i decided that I had had enough and today sent in my resignation .He then messaged me saying that i had to work a weeks notice which i did not want to do as the job was already giving me sleepless nights and i wanted out.He then messaged saying if I could i would have to work a weeks notice as it says in my contract. I told him i could not as it was making me ill.
I have since realised that the contract they sent me i have in email form i did not actually sign and did not email it back to them.Does anyone think they would come after me insisting i have to work that 1 week notice period?

Wireless festival CP park

On the third and final day of the festival now. Seems to be going ok? There’s a ton of security around and they are really making an effort to look after the local residents, blocking off roads for parking etc.

I have no clue who most of the musicians on the bill are but there are a lot of excited young people around having fun, which is good to see. Suns out, the local jerk places have their street barbecues and music out, can’t complain.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins hopes to talk Crystal Palace left back Tayo Adaramola into signing for him on loan.

The Sky Blues chief faces a fight with MK Dons and now Preston North End who have entered the hunt.

Crystal Palace are plotting a late move in the battle for Wolves’ £20million-rated Morgan Gibbs-White.

Right to Die....

I visited a cousin I am close to here in Canada yesterday. She has stage four cancer and has a brilliant, fun-loving family.

Helene is the head of the house. There is no doubt that everything revolves around her in a beautiful, loving way.

Her husband Jaques is 100% reliant on his missus

She is around 74.

I got Helene some chocolate digestive(which I did not eat this time) and a jubilee biscuit shortcakes with the queen on them. She loved it. This was yesterday.

We had a good time....

I heard today from one of her daughters that July the 11th is the day that she will die, she has chosen to do this, and that's it.

We have the right to die here in Quebec which I am all for but.....

What a weird (and excuse me) fuc king feeling.
