Not your usual 80s footballer. Could last more than a season in a different country . A very fine footballer he was too and what a life he had . Always admired the fella .

Best Palace 11 since last promotion

What is your best team since we got promoted.
At the top of my head..

Speroni

AWB Sakho Cahill PVA

Jedinak

Zaha Cabaye Loftus Cheek Bolasie

Murray

Difficult leaving out Dann as he has been superb for us and also Guita but felt Speroni had the edge. Bolaise and Zaha were great together terrorising defences from either wing

Insert a footballer into a band/musician/song title

Have we done this before in the last 20 years? Probably. Lockdown is all about repeats and reusing old content anyway.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Readers got the chance to voice their opinions on ommessions like Mario Golf and Kick Off 2.

Outside of there being a few too many racing games on the list I think it covered the best of the best pretty well.

It included stuff like Colin Mcrae, Madden, Tiger Woods, and went back to Pong, Football manager on the C64 and Track and Field.

Old Palace kits

Hi everyone, can't believe it's been so long since I first signed up here!

I run a wee blog about football shirts where every week I write an in-depth piece about an interesting kit, and this past month I've run a theme around Palace.

Since many will be bored out of their minds due to the lockdown, I figured these articles were worth sharing - they're all chunky reads and might bring back some good (and bad) memories from years past.

To view the link you have to Register or Login, while the following shirts have had individual pieces dedicated to them;

I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about these kits, the different manufacturers, and what everyone's favourite tops are. I'm quite partial to the old Fly Virgin shirts myself, but sadly own none of them.

'Muddy' at Arsenal 1970

Supporters like me of a certain age will remember the three games we played v Arsenal end of October and in November 1970. The 3 games attracted well over 100,000 people, two in the League Cup, and one league game at Highbury. I saw all three games which was Arsenal's Double Season. Palace knocked them the out of the League Cup on November 9th thanks to goals by Gerry Queen and a penalty hit home by Bobby Tambling (it was their only home defeat). The following Saturday we played them again at Highbury, and got a 1-1 draw Alan Birchenall scoring a minute after they had taken the lead. I someone managed to get a stand ticket for that game, bur remember it was pouring with rain that day, and recall seeing soaked friends back at the tube station. The picture attached is Palace hero for that game and many other around that time of a mud caked John Jackson. He and the rest of the team played so well containing wave after wave of arsenal attacks. The ground was terrible not like today's pitches.

R.I.P Pete King

It’s with a heavy heart that I’m sad to announce that former cpfc publications manager Pete King died yesterday. Pete worked at Palace for over 20 years working on the matchday programme, clubcall + playeinterviews etc.

Pete loved his most of his time at Palace until the last year or so when unfortunately due to bad running of the club 46 people were made redundant.

Pete often spoke fondly of his time at Palace and talked about the wonderful people that worked there behind the scenes as well as the management and players. Only this week Pete sent me a copy of Mark Brights autobiography which he told me he really enjoyed.

Pete told me he’s favourite memory was being right behind the goal with the photographers at Wembley when Hopkin curled it in. He said the noise behind him when the ball hit the back of the net was deafening.

Pete often told me about how mad things were when we got to the Fa Cup final in 1990, obviously back then there was no internet so Pete and the communications team were so so busy especially with clubcall as this was pretty much the fastest way of communicating to fans.

If you have any fond memories of Pete I would love to hear them.

Thanks

Happy Birthday David Payne

A very Happy Birthday David, very much part of the 1969 promotion team and our four seasons in the top flight for the historic first time.

Surprisingly David is often overlooked when there are threads about players who have come through from the Junior/academy ranks and he is very much one of our own born in Mayday Hospital. Over 300 games for the club he would not look out of place in todays squad having a determined streak to his game plus an eye for a killing pass. I can recall many a defence splitting pass that lead to a crucial Palace goal.

Thanks David for the memories and enjoy your birthday.

Neighbours missing fence panels stopping our privacy

Advice and views welcome..

Long story, few weeks back when we had the strong winds, my neighbour lost two fence panels and the post, wouldn't have been too bad, but these two panels are the first two from the back of the house which gives us privacy when sitting and relaxing on our patio's, The fence boundary is his, But since we've owned our home for the past 26 years, for some reason, the two fence panels and post has always been inside our boundary, always been like that since we started buying our home all those years back,
At the time, our older neighbours back then, had trees all the way down their boundary right up to their patio, which is higher than ours by a few inches, I can only think my older neighbours back then agreed with the people who we brought the house off to have the fence on this side, since then , the house was sold to housing association.

Our present neighbours who moved in couple years back now( and has been a very big pain since day one ), hasn't fixed them as they think its our job as panels/post are just inside our garden outside their boundary, These have fallen down before in years past, and have been fixed by our neighbours housing association at the time,

I bit the bullet and have brought two new panels and post to fix ourselves, and told him yesterday we were going to sort this out as it's in our garden, now his being a c@nt and moved his glass garden table right up to his boundary next to his gas bbq, which he loves lighting up and stinking out our rear of house next to the wooden fence last summer, which now makes it very difficult to fix the problem in case we knock his items,
They also have a dog, even thou, todate he hasn't come into our garden,
We can't even sit and relax on our own patio in private, and also have to keep our curtain's shut in the back of house to stop them looking in

Postponed - Pre-season EVA Air Queensland Champions Cup - Queensland, Australia

Unsurprising, it’s just been announced that our pre-season tour of Australia as been postponed.

It is with immense disappointment that we must confirm that the club’s participation in the EVA Air Queensland Champions Cup in Queensland, Australia, scheduled for July 2020 has been postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent uncertainty surrounding the culmination of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Club Chairman Steve Parish said: “Firstly, the thoughts of everyone at Crystal Palace Football Club are with everyone affected by this terrible virus here in England, in Australia and around the world. Football is of course of secondary importance at this time of global crisis.

“It is bitterly disappointing not to be able to make the club’s landmark trip to Queensland this July for everyone here at the club, but especially so for our supporters in Australia who have been so excited since the recent announcement of our planned trip. We will do everything we possibly can to try to rearrange the tour for 2021, once things become clear with the Premier League schedule for the remainder of this season, and next year’s provisional timings too.”

Supporters who purchased tickets are encouraged to retain their ticket as they will be valid for rescheduled dates. Refunds will be issued for those that can’t attend the new dates

Liga MX ends Promotion/Relegation

mardi 21 avril 2020

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla has confirmed that promotion and relegation from and to the league has been suspended for five years, following a vote conducted during a video meeting of the 18 Liga MX club owners on Friday.

Ascenso MX clubs voted in favor of the decision earlier this week, with Bonilla confirming that each of the 12 teams will receive 20 million pesos ($845,000) every year.

The second division will become a league seeking to promote young Mexican players, although there was no news about how that will work. It has been reported that there will be a limit on players over the age of 23. The current Liga MX minors rule will disappear, said Bonilla.
Some notes here, even though promotion and relegation is on hold for five years, I don't see it coming back. The current second tier, Ascenso MX, only has 12 teams, down from 24 ten years ago. Plus, there is a rule that the one team relegated from Liga MX can pay the promoted team from Ascenso MX 120 million pesos to stay in Liga MX, if that Ascenso MX team doesn't meet certain financial requirements set by Liga MX. Not one team in the Ascenso MX league met those standards this season. But between teams folding or being kicked out of the league, there has been movement between the two leagues recently.

The talk now is that this is leading up to a merger of Liga MX and MLS. Personally, don't know how that would work given the financial differences plus you would be looking at a 50 team league. (Maybe a two-tiered league)

Should masks be made compulsory ?

Should masks be made compulsory ?

The public should wear homemade masks when they venture outdoors to help reduce the spread of coronavirus, according to scientists who claim Britain’s masks policy does too little to prevent infections.

Prof Sian Griffiths, who led the Hong Kong government’s investigation into the 2003 Sars epidemic, said Britain should adopt the same approach as the US, where people are advised to make their own “cloth face coverings” and wear them in public spaces

UK iron in the US

Can I plug a UK iron - 250v into a US 110v outlet? There's no details on it, like saying 110v-250v, on the plug it just says 250v. No mention in the instruction manual either. Can I just stick an adaptor on it and plug it in?

I think it should be fine - just won't get as hot, or an I setting myself up for an unintended self arson event?

87/88 Season Vids

Hoping the BBS can help me out.

Looking for game footage from the 87/88 season which seems to be very difficult to come across.

I think the Club Shop used to sell videos of all our home games from this season, but they never seem to pop up on online.

So far I've found footage of varying quality from the following games:
Birmingham A 6-0
Man City A 3-1
Hull City A 1-2
Middlesborough A 1-2
Swindon Town A 2-2
Blackburn Rovers H 2-0
Leeds Utd A 0-1
Man City H 2-0
and also the Mercandile Credit Tournament at Wembley (just Phil Barber's saved pen in the 1-2 defeat on pens!!!)

Anyone got any of these old vids or know of any other footage online from the season?

Past Match Trivia

Sundry interesting facts from old Palace matches.

Not from memory, I hasten to add but from re-reading old, mostly away, matches as I sort them following my move. Amazing what you can occupy your time with under lockdown.

No.1 - Bury v Palace (Gigg Lane 6/3/99). All the more poignant following Bury's sad demise. Here's hoping they rise again.

An excellent programme, overall

In goal for Bury, a certain Dean Kiely
Bury's top scorer - Andy Preece
Bury manager ….. Neil Warnock
Palace Pen Pictures included 'David Turtle'
According to the stats section the team conceding most goals 60-90 minutes was.... Palace!

Hopefully more to follow

Newcastle takeover

How would you feel if Crystal Palace had been taken over by a consortium whose financial backing was provided by the Saudi royal family?

a) You would be seriously opposed to the takeover and it would break the bond that you feel you had with the club.

b) You would not support the takeover, you may even be critical of it, but you would privately be delighted that the club now had the funds to compete at the top end of the division.

c) You would support it and point out that many other clubs have taken a similar route.

I didn’t know this film existed. I was in the protest in Genoa where a young man was shot dead by the police about 200 yards from me. Me and the people I was with came very, very close to staying in the school that was raided by the police. We only decided not to at the last minute, thank goodness. I was an apprentice at the council at the time.

But while I knew it was brutal I didn’t realise how bad. From the second link:

Quote:

The raid started a few minutes before midnight, when policemen massed outside the school. A police officer attacked British journalist Mark Covell, who tried to tell them he was a journalist. Within seconds, more policemen joined in the attack, beating him with nightsticks to the ground. According to Covell, one policeman kicked him in the chest, breaking half-a-dozen ribs whose splintered ends then shredded the membrane of his left lung, and laughed. Other policemen kicked him around, breaking his hand and damaging his spine.[11] The police then used an armoured police van to break through the school gates and 150 policemen, wearing crash helmets and carrying truncheons and shields, entered the school compound.
Quote:

For the raid, police wore masks to hinder identification.[12] Most occupants of the building were in their sleeping bags, and many raised their arms in surrender when they realised the police were breaking into the building. However, police attacked the crowds with truncheons, beating everyone indiscriminately. A 65-year-old woman's arm was broken. Melanie Jonasch, a 28-year-old archaeology student from Berlin, was attacked by officers set upon her, beating her head so hard that she rapidly lost consciousness. When she fell to the ground, officers circled her, beating and kicking her limp body, banging her head against a nearby cupboard, leaving her in a pool of blood.
I also didn’t know that the protestors were then taken to a detention centre and tortured:

Quote:

Prisoners at the temporary detention facility in Bolzaneto were forced to say "Viva il duce."[15] and sing fascist songs: "Un, due, tre. Viva Pinochet!" The 222 people who were held at Bolzaneto were treated to a regime later described by public prosecutors as torture. On arrival, they were marked with felt-tip crosses on each cheek, and many were forced to walk between two parallel lines of officers who kicked and beat them. Most were herded into large cells, holding up to 30 people. Here, they were forced to stand for long periods, facing the wall with their hands up high and their legs spread. Those who failed to hold the position were shouted at, slapped and beaten.[16] A prisoner with an artificial leg and, unable to hold the stress position, collapsed and was rewarded with two bursts of pepper spray in his face and, later, a particularly savage beating.
Many police officers ended up being found guilty but served no sentence as the statute of limitations has passed.

Shamefully the spokesperson for Tony Blair said:

Quote:

While his citizens were being beaten and tormented in illegal detention, spokesmen for the then prime minister, Tony Blair, declared: "The Italian police had a difficult job to do. The prime minister believes that they did that job."

Belarus Premier Division

Being the only league on at the moment I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this. My adopted team, the mighty FK Slutsk beat bitter rivals Shakhter Soligorsk 2-1 away from home with 10 men for the majority of the match.

Barys Pankratav put in a man of the match performance, saving one penalty and a shot from point-blank range in injury time to keep the mighty Slutsk ahead and move them to the top of the league!

Hit & Run Death - Portland Road

Did anybody else hear about this yesterday ?

My mate owns a tyre shop and it happened outside so he has it on his CCTV. It shows a motorbike speeding up the road after which a guy attempts to cross the road and is hit by a speeding BMW before being carried what looks like c.60-70 yards.

There was also some other footage showing the victim lying in the road after, which was horrific.

The BMW driver p1ssed off, but a person from Thornton Heath was later arrested and 'helping with enquiries'.

The poor guy that died was only 31.

All Time Home Grown XI

Another "Time on our Hands" thread. What's our best home grown team. I've stuck with players I've seen play. You don't have to. Any formation you like unless it's daft like putting Ian Walsh in goal. I've included Ian Wright but it's sort of cheating:

Southgate

Zaha Murphy Hilaire

Morrison Wright

It really shows how blessed we oldies were to see that late 70s team.

Football comedy series

mardi 14 avril 2020

Hey everyone,

We've recently completed a football comedy series that we've been working on for a long time, and have put the series online for all to see here:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Featuring local sides Croydon Athletic (whose stadium we used for filming), Redhill FC, Chipstead FC, Sutton Utd and Warren Mead, it's a mockumentary about a team recently bought by a millionaire businessman who has ambitions above his means. Needless to say, I had plenty of inspiration from a certain club in perennial financial difficulties...

It'd be great if you can check it out, let me know what you think and spread the word if you like it; as I say we've put in a lot of passion to this, trying to make a comedy like The Thick of It / The Office where there's subtle jokes and re-watch value etc.

Thanks, and hopefully enjoy! :p

How old is/did your oldest relative live to?

The reason I decided to do this thread as we are inside 24 7, I've decided to look into my family history.

I was lucky enough to meet and know all 4 of my grandparents and my 101 year old grandmother is still around.

On my father's side of the family, only my Great Aunt Doris made it past 80, living to 84. However, on mothers family, her mother is 101 and her mother got 97!
And the majority of my maternal relatives lived past 80 and into 90s.

So just i was just interested to see how it was for other families?

Current UK monetary policy

I can't see any mention on the BBS of the massive change to the monetary governance of the UK which has just been announced. Instead of issuing bonds to raise money, the government will be funded directly by the Bank of England on an unlimited basis.

Here is an article from an investment publication discussing this:
Quote:

Well that didn’t take long. With the prime minister incapacitated, the Bank of England governor has made its move. The governator, as he should be known henceforth, is now financing the government directly, without the government having to issue bonds.

The wonderfully named “Ways and Means Facility” will be expanded to allow the government to spend money it hasn’t borrowed yet. It’s a bit like an overdraft facility for the Treasury at the Bank of England.

The caveats make for a longer read than the policy itself. Politicians' favourite words are all over the new policy: “temporary”, “short term”, “temporary and short-term” together, “undisclosed amount”, “extraordinary” and claims they’d been doing it all along anyway, so nothing to see here.

Just days earlier, with Boris Johnson still available on video conferencing, the BoE governator had a very different tone. He explained in a Financial Times opinion piece, perhaps exposing the nature of “opinions”, how “the UK’s institutional safeguards rule out” what he called “monetary financing”, which is an “expansion of the central bank balance sheet with the aim of funding the government”.

Four days later, the FT’s top story reads “The Bank of England will directly finance the extra spending needs of the UK government”…

The loophole is an old one. There are a few loopholes, actually.

Because the BoE’s policy of financing the government directly is temporary, and because it’s always been around, it’s nothing to be worried about.

But a lot of today’s government policies were once described as “temporary” when they were brought in. And the fact that the government has been doing something for a long time is no less of a problem if it is suddenly doing vastly more of it.

How much more? (This is my favourite bit.)

In a statement to financial markets, the government announced it would extend the size of the government’s bank account at the central bank, known historically as the “Ways and Means Facility,” which normally stands at just £400m.

This will rise to an undisclosed amount, allowing ministers to spend more in the short term without having to tap the gilts market. In 2008, a similar move saw the Ways and Means Facility rise briefly to £20bn.

Did you get that? The central bank is financing the government to an “undisclosed amount” which won’t show up in the bond markets. But don’t worry, the “undisclosed amount” will be temporary…

How temporary is also undisclosed. Although the programme under which all this takes place – the Ways and Means Facility – isn’t temporary at all, so there’s nothing to worry about.

A temporary increase of an undisclosed amount in a permanent policy? This is a contradictory combination of fudges. It undermines the basic accountability of government.

The government is having its cake, eating it, not paying for it and not telling anyone how much cake. But we needn’t worry…

Strangely enough, there are two versions of the FT article which I’m quoting from. The newer version has removed the reference to “undisclosed amount” and replaced it with “unlimited amount”.

That’s reassuring too then…

On to the second loophole.

The governator also explained how doing exactly the same thing could have two different outcomes depending on how you justified it. This is the sort of argument I expect to pop up when my daughter turns 14. But let’s go with the BoE’s version.

Because the BoE is governed by law that requires it to focus on financial stability and inflation of 2%, its own monetary financing won’t lead to runaway inflation. Despite it pursuing exactly the same policy as those who were explicitly trying to finance the government, which did lead to inflation.

You see, it doesn’t matter what you do, it matters what you intend to do…

This part of the governator’s opinion piece made me laugh out loud: “Our framework also recognises that the effects of monetary policy on the real economy are ultimately temporary.” Tell that to those who have experienced high inflation…

But here’s the interesting bit. The part of the BoE’s policy that is getting all the attention today was carefully not mentioned by the governator in his opinion piece which explained why our central bank wouldn’t finance the government.

On 5 April he listed the ways in which the BoE implements policy and how this wouldn’t lead to (deliberate) financing of the government. But he didn’t mention the Ways and Means Facility which was activated today. Why? Because it does finance the government – its primary purpose. It has nothing to do with managing inflation or bond markets.

Four days later, now that it’s doing it, it’s been doing it all along... Four days ago, it wasn’t doing it, because it would be illegal and lead to inflation…

Which brings us to my point today.

The news from the BoE and the Treasury has kicked off a debate about Modern Monetary Theory. MMTers believe that the government need not borrow, repay debt or tax in order to spend money. Because the government can issue money itself, or get the central bank to do it for them, government finances are an abstraction. Just as you can keep a Monopoly game going by dishing out money, so too can the government keep the economy going.

That’s the background to MMT. Today’s critics are in uproar about how the BoE has implemented MMT, without the prime minister being in place to know about it, let alone his approval. It’s just gone and done it.

Critics argue that, because the Ways and Means Facility has always been around, it’s not MMT at all. It’s normal functioning of the BoE.

The irony is, they’re both right. Or, to be strict about it, the MMT claim that we already live in a world of MMT is correct. We just didn’t realise it until now, when we needed to because of a crisis.

In a world where the central bank can create money willy-nilly, because money isn’t backed by anything real like gold, money really is just a policy tool. It can be fiddled with however governments like. MMT, first and foremost, is a description of how the world already works, not how we should change it.

This has been true since the Nixon shock, which closed the gold window. We’ve been living in the world MMT describes since then. It’s just that most of us never realised it. And didn’t realise what it means. The policies it makes possible.

Now, with a crisis on our hands, governments are breaking sacrosanct rules of the past, only to discover that MMT did accurately describe how and why those rules could be broken all along. That those rules were from a different monetary era. When gold made breaking the rules impossible.

The BoE and Treasury aren’t launching MMT. They’re discovering they can use their powers as MMTers have advocated for years, despite denying MMT is correct...

This isn’t good news. It’s just true. It exposes why money needs to be backed by something and outside the government’s powers. But that probably sounds bonkers to you, despite the UK still having about ten different note-issuing banks – evidence that private banks used to control money, not the government, in much of the UK.

The good news is, in his denial that he would ever do what he decided to do four days later, the BoE governator described what the consequences of his new policy would be:

This type of reserve creation has been linked in other countries to runaway inflation. That is because it could undermine a central bank’s ability to control monetary conditions over the medium term. Using monetary financing would damage credibility on controlling inflation by eroding operational independence. It would also ultimately result in an unsustainable central bank balance sheet and is incompatible with the pursuit of an inflation target by an independent central bank.

Now that we’re using monetary financing, to an undisclosed and/or unlimited extent, depending on when you opened the FT article, even if on a “temporary” basis, we’re on course for inflation.

And then, the BoE will have to make a terrifying choice – does it finance the government or abide by inflation targeting? Because the two are “incompatible”, as the governator explained.

What do you think he’ll choose?

iPhone Contract

I am due a phone upgrade in a weeks time and I am not sure which model iPhone to get.

I currently have an S9 and cannot say I've enjoyed the Samsung/Android experience, I find the simplicity of the iPhone a lot easier.

Currently on vodafone and have been for the last 8 years, with a minimum of two plans throughout so I am hoping they give me a decent deal.

My current spend is £40 a month and ideally I need around 10GB of data, that pretty much narrows it down to the following phones;

XR - Wife has this one and it looks fine.
X - No idea on this model
11 - Newer model and should be in my price range
8 - Stillhas the middle button and prices are low, but is it to old?

Any advice is appreciated.

Easter Jokes-please do not read if easily offended!!

Well in an attempt to lift spirits and deflect from current conversation, thought I'd start an Easter jokes thread.

Apologies in advance if you feel that some of this is offensive, but probably no more offensive than some of the comments currently displayed to each other on the Coronavirus thread! (Maz, West Country Boy, Spindle and Joe85-the latter two for political balance-please take note!)

So I'll start off with:

Jesus walks into a pub in Scotland and announces "Hi, I'm Jesus, the new messiah and I've come back to save you after 2000 years".

The landlord retorts "yeah alright mate, we get about about a dozen of you in here each year".

"No honesty it's me" Jesus replies.

"Well go on prove it" shouts a voice from the back of the pub.

"Well ok" says Jesus, "what do you want me to do?"

The voice from the back shouts out sarcastically "Well there's a loch outside, why don't you walk across it?"

"Yeah ok" said Jesus, and he walks outside, with the pub emptying completely and a huge crowd gathers.

Jesus walks to the waters edge, steps onto the loch and starts to walk across. He gets about halfway across and starts sinking. He then swims back to the top of the loch, steps back onto the loch water and continues walking to the other end of the loch.

The crowd race round, cheering and shouting "we believe you we believe you, you really are the new messiah, you have indeed come to save us".

One voice shouts out "jesus I believe you, I believe you, but just out of curosity what happened halfway across, when you started sinking and had to start again?".

"Well" said Jesus, "the last time I did it, I didn't have any holes in my feet!!"

Original 1993/94 Team Photo

Slightly odd request maybe but does anyone happen to have the original 1993/94 season team photo please they could share? It was when our shirts were still Sponsorless, and the keepers were in a Turquoise keeper kit.

Cobra 148 GTLdx modern alternative

After selling my dx way back in 1984, I am in the process of setting up a new rig. I have just ordered an iMax 2000 to replace my battered and corroded 5/8 silver rod. Now I need to pick up a half decent replacement for my much beloved Cobra. Someone has suggested the CRT SS6900N : To view the link you have to Register or Login
I hear the skip will be good this summer? Is the ssb community still active or is everyone now getting licenced and on 10/12m?

Show appreciation for Brighton and Hove Albion this coming Monday.

...for achieving the milestone of not winning a game for 100 days (and counting).

We can all step to our front doors, gardens, balconies, windows in our Palace garb and have a well merited one minute round of applause, and share on social media. A viral response in time of virus.

If you managed to mug a twat fan in Brighton in any of the recent away games down there......you can shop extra solidarity with them by applauding with one of their happy clappers.

Palace vs Liverpool FA Cup Semi 1990

Hi All.

I am sure this has been asked before. I've had a quick search but can't find anything.

Would anyone know where I could find full length digital footage of the 1990 FA Cup Semi Final?

With a lack of football on TV I want to celebrate the 30th anniversary and show my 12 year old all the drama.

Sadly my VHS is useless as I don't have a video player and I can only find highlights on YouTube.

Cheers!

Coronavirus - advice for families with disabled children.

I know there are a fair number of BBSers who have disabled children.

I thought, therefore, it might be helpful if I shared this link. It's a page signposting a range of information and advice for families with disabled children, with everything from helplines to ideas for keeping children entertained during the lockdown.

Palace have played 416 Premier League games to Brighton's 105 Premier League games

jeudi 2 avril 2020

Comparative Premier League records of Palace and Brighton

Palace have played 416 Premier League games winning 120 times

Brighton have played 105 Premier League games winning 24 times.

That huge gap is not going to be closed anytime soon

The Lockdown Cooking Thread

mercredi 1 avril 2020

A thread for hints, tips and recipes.

I'm a fan of batch cooking, and our freezer never doesn't have portions of Ragu in it. 500g beef mince and 500g pork mince will make 4 meals for two people. Always pasta in the cupboard. If you've got lasagne sheets, and butter, flour, milk for bechamel then you've got another use for the ragu you've lovingly prepared and frozen.

Also often cook the filling for a cottage or shepherd's pie and freeze it in portions, ready for mash whenever you fancy it.

Topside of beef is a great and affordable cut for a roast. Will have loads of leftovers (depending on the size). Use the leftover meat for cottage pie. Leftover veg from the weekend roast was made into bubble and squeak on Monday, with the last of the sausages from the butcher, and a fried egg.

If we've got potatoes and eggs and veg then I like to make a sort of made up hash. Often with sausages or sausage meat.

Support your local butcher and/or farm shop. The supermarkets will be fine after all this. It could, however, be the final nail in the coffin for some butchers.

Doctor Jims

Just read the interview with Alan Birchinall on the Palace App and he made mention of the nightclub in Croydon Doctor Jim’s which I had forgotten about . It bought back some old memories I spent my stag night at the Shirley Poppy pub then going on to D J,s after which I got arrested and released at 10 am the following morning . We used to spend one or two nights in the club often meeting players from Palace and other London clubs . I presume it’s long gone any one got any further info ?

Keir Starmer - Labour Party leader

He’s gonna win by a land slide so might as well start a thread.

Personally think he’s got less charisma than Mr Bean (who he speaks like), and will turn out to be a lack lustre and awful leader. But we will see.

Arise Sir Keir.
