Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Dates - modern football

Life as an exile fan. Hotel booked. Flight booked. Long weekend booked. Theatre tickets in London booked for the Sunday. A brilliant birthday treat. The highlight- Palace v Wolves. Date change - the weekend ruined. I had checked all the tv schedules but forgot about the Europa League. Please, if there is the possibility of a change indicate it on the fixture list before we buy tickets. I would have chosen another match. I will be massively out of pocket.

Andros Townsend - Goal of the Season

After the Goal of the Season fiasco on Match of the Day, I complained to the BBC. Their first reply simply repeated what had happened on the programme - 'Gary made clear earlier in the programme that Alan and Ian will choose the overall winner'. I replied that they should have chosen the BEST goal, not the most important, or anything else. Their reply was 'the criteria for Goal of the Season wasn't changed at the last minute'. Well it was. My complaint was then passed up to the 'Executive Complaints Unit'. Their reply is below. I'll be writing to Ofcom next, if anyone wants to write too. It won't change the result, but it would be good if they'd admit they got it wrong, and even apologise.

19 August 2019
Dear Mr M*****
Match of the Day, BBC One, 12 May 2019
Thank you for your email of 14 August. I have looked into the concern you raised and I
am now able to let you know the outcome of the Executive Complaints Unit’s
investigation.
I appreciate you were dissatisfied with the explanation you were given for the choice
of Goal of the Season and I also appreciate you do not think Vincent Kompany’s goal
was the “best”. As a long-standing supporter of Crystal Palace I should say I share
your view that Andros Townsend’s goal was clearly better!
However, I think it is reasonable to say this is a subjective rather than an objective
issue and, as in so many aspects of sport, people will hold different opinions and have
different points of view. Six goals were shortlisted from those scored during the
season and the public were invited to vote online for their “favourite goal”. The fact
that no single goal won an outright majority of the vote would appear to suggest there
was no consensus among viewers about what was the goal of the season (however that
was judged by the people who voted).
I therefore cannot agree the final choice of the three presenters was wrong or that it
went against the spirit of the competition. Messrs Lineker, Shearer and Wright
explained how they reached their decision and even if you may disagree with their
reasoning, they were entitled to hold that view (just as you and I take the view
Townsend’s goal was the best, even if we may have reached that decision for different
reasons). For me, the fact it was not only a technically brilliant strike but also resulted
in an away victory against the champions was undoubtedly a factor.
In conclusion, I do not believe there are grounds for me to uphold your complaint
because the choice of goal of the season inevitably involves a degree of subjectivity.
There is no provision for further appeal against this decision within the BBC but please
2
let me know if you have any comments to make about my finding. I would be grateful
if you could let me have any such comments by 3 September. Alternatively, I should
explain that if you do take this complaint further, it is open to you to ask the
broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, to consider your complaint. You can find details of
how to contact Ofcom and the procedures it will apply at the following website:
To view the link you have to Register or Login. You
can also write to Ofcom at Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road, London SE1
9HA, or telephone either 0300 123 3333 or 020 7981 3040.
Yours sincerely

When does autism become bad behavior and vice versa?

My heart goes out to all families and parents of children with autism and to the actual children themselves whose life I can not even begin to imagine.

I was reading a news story yesterday, that really touched me, but at the same time got me questioning as to when does autism become bad behavior and vice versa?

I hope you can access this: To view the link you have to Register or Login

Autism seems to be becoming far more prevalent in this day and age, or perhaps it is being diagnosed more than it was 50 years ago. In the past would such actions as described in the linked article have been considered “just” bad parenting/misbehaving child? From what I see from a video of this incident, there is no doubt in my mind that this kid has a real and undeniable problem, and the parents were very lucky to have an understanding flight crew and fellow passengers on board. In other circumstances it could have turned pretty ugly.

I know there are posters on this sight that have firsthand experience of autism and the commitment required to support and love a child afflicted with this condition. I too have acquaintances with children diagnosed to various degrees, up to and including a 21-year old which brings its own problems (something for another day).

I guess my very cynical question would be, does an autism diagnoses give some parents (obviously not all) a free pass to allow bad behavior of a child? As in the case linked, at some point the parents must have played the “He has Autism” card… and it brought them a lot of sympathy and understanding.

How easy would it be to abuse this situation, and a perfectly normal child of run ragged parents to misbehave in a similar situation and be condoned by all on board the plane leading to the possibility that they would be asked to leave the plane prior to departure for not only their safety but the sanity of all on the flight.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to get slaughtered here, but what the hey… makes a change from talking about Palace and Brexit.

Babies at Selurst

This may sound stupid (and it might be) but does anyone know whether you can take a baby (under 1) to a game without a ticket?

I ask as my brother can't make the game on Saturday and my wife is keen to come to the game (season ticket holders in the Upper Holmesdale). We have a 7 month old though and unsure about child care at short notice.

I've had a look on the club website and can't see any info, and thought I'd likely get a quicker response here and some people may even have experience of bringing a small child and can advise whether it's fine or a terrible idea.

I think she'd probably enjoy it and our seats are in quite a sedate part of the ground. We'd have a sling rather than pram as well (I'm not that stupid).

Cheers!

The Populists and Far Right and Climate Change Denial

Interesting article on the vitriol fired at Greta and other young climate change campaigners, almost exclusively the far right parties and their mouthpieces.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I can get the logic of the business lobby end of the right being anti anything that might dent their profits or halt their ability to destroy the planet for gain, but I do struggle with understanding the way the populist far right parties like AfD etc, vilify these campaigners and also deny the scientific facts in front of their eyes.

And fair play to the BBC for making it clear exactly who is leading the attacks of the youngsters trying to save the planet for generations following them.

What if Palace was gone for good?

The tragic loss of Bury made me think about this. There may well be a AFC Bury type Phoenix club, but what if we lost our beloved Palace and there wasn’t a reborn club? Local non league side for me.

Kit sizes

Apologies if there’s a more appropriate forum, please relocate if necessary. After some advice pls. My soon to be 9 and 6 year old kids want palace away kits for their birthdays. My previous attempts to get appropriate sizes have been hit and miss. They’re both big boys (height). Tempted to get the 9 year old the 13 yr kit and 6 yr old the 9-10.

What have others done? Cheers.

Advice on Canada as a holiday venue

The wife and I am thinking about going to Canada next year for a holiday. At the moment we are looking mainly at the West - around Vancouver and Calgary - and would like to include a train journey at some point. Other than that we are pretty much open to suggestions. Any advice on what to do and not to do would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Dean Saunders jailed

Dean Saunders has been jailed for 10 weeks

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has been jailed for 10 weeks.

The Welshman pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a roadside breath test and failing to provide a breath sample for analysis at a police station.

The 55-year-old, who was stopped on suspicion of drink driving by police in Boughton, Chester, on May 10, was sentenced on Wednesday.

Saunders, of The Paddocks, Whitegate, near Northwich, Cheshire, had initially denied both charges at an earlier hearing but indicated a change of plea to guilty on Tuesday.

He said he had been out at Chester Races and had drunk two pints.

He will also be banned from driving for 30 months upon his release from prison and ordered to pay court costs of £620.

Saunders, who also played for Aston Villa and Derby County and was capped by Wales 75 times, is a regular football TV and radio pundit.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Colchester

mardi 27 août 2019

Congratulations to Colchester, they deserved it. Defended for their lives, looked lively on the break & held their nerve in the shootout.

The less said about our performance the better.
Ten changes? No wonder Roy doesn’t start them in the Prem.
Camarasa apart, I’m not sure the rest of them made any sort of a claim to start on Saturday.
Three or four ‘quality’ signings are going to be needed in January. We are woefully short of that!

Suggested Team and Formation For: Aston Villa

Guiata
Ward - Dann - Cahill - van Aanholt
Milvojevic
Kouyate - Schlupp
Townsend —————— Zaha
Ayew

Hennessey, Kelly, McCarthy, McArthur, Meyer, Camarasa, Benteke

I think this is probably our best team right now. Full of directness. I know Townsend is in a bad run of form, but I think one more game, we know how hard he works and we know what he can do when he’s firing on all cylinders. Schlupp can move wide if Townsend is poor again and needs taking off.

The bench is full of options for winning or losing scenarios as well, Hodgson will have no excuse not to use them, like he did last year.

I think I saw someone saying that they think the whole squad is stronger this year than it was last year, I’d agree, I’d say the only place we are weaker is in the right back berth.

Peaky Blinders

I assumed there was a thread on this already but the search history tells me no.

I thought it was a really good comeback episode from yesterday. I'm really liking what they are doing with Tommy getting up to badness in parliament. I was a bit worried at the start of the episode that they were about to bin that story altogether.

Only negative is the kid who plays Tommy's kid has no talent for acting whatsoever.

Racism in football

With the latest round of abuse, this time against Rashford, on Twitter I wonder what the **** is wrong with people. I would no more do that than put my hand in the fire. These are footballers and in certain cases “my footballers that play for CPFC” I don’t see anything but, overpaid 😉, professionals. If I was a player I would simply take myself away from Twitter or Instagram or whatever. Shouldn’t have to but I wouldn’t put myself through it.

Crystal Ball: League Cup: Home to Colchester

Predictions for tomorrow's League Cup game at Selhurst Park against Colchester.
My understanding is that these ties now go straight to penalties if scores are level after 90 minutes.
Score, scorers, attendance and whether the result is after 90 minutes or after penalties.
Hope that makes sense.

The three weakest teams in Premier League 19\20

dimanche 25 août 2019

Most seasons there are between one and four obvious contenders for the drop. Normally these comprise weak promoted teams and those in clear decline or suffering from evident mismanagement, and be it Football or financial.

This season all three promoted teams seem to have something about them and a solid management plan, and no team so far seems to be in non-fixable dissaray.

Even Newcastle looked organized and motivated today.

Could be the tightest relegation struggle ever.

After the launch of about 15 different threads in reaction to a single loss and poor performance I thought I post this thread to give all of those who where giving everybody at the club a good slagging the opportunity to apologise here.

Go on then, you know who you are.

Van Aanholt the first ever player in PL history

to score an away injury time winner at Man U... According to Jeff Stelling on SSN

So are we the first ever PL club to win there in injury time or was there a Moan U OG at some point?

Palace, I f**king love you!

Just when you least expect it, Palace lift you up!

Well done Roy, we’ll done every single player.

I’ve been to every single one of our PL games at Old Trafford. Never seen us score, let alone win. One of my favourite away days ever.

The gods we’re shining on us today lol

Cahill should have been sent off
Wankers should have had a free kick/ penalty from a kelly foul
Luka should have had a second yellow for the penalty foul
Wankers missed a penalty
Ironically we scored in in Fergie time:supergrin:

Watford get twatted again

Also Brighton had another goal ruled out by VAR

I love their fire drill by the happy snap Japanese tourists all left before they even scored

What a day, time for more beer

Benteke Wont score a hatrick today

Just got a feeling the floodgates will stay shut.

Ooooooh Christian Benteke.......

We will win today!!!!!

Woken up with a renewed sense of optimism!!

It's the Palace way to win today after such a shocker last week.

They are a team who like to break with pace so not sure they will like playing our counter attacking style.

We always do well v Maguire.

Season starts today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt Jansen's autobiography

Matt Jansen's book comes out in a couple of week's time: What Was, What Is and What Might Have Been

I'm sure much of it will reflect on the aftermath of his accident, just as he was getting the international recognition he so deserved, but I'm really looking forward to see what he has to say about his time at Palace (and also his goal against us, in our vital win over Blackburn, when we were in administration).

He certainly seems to have a great affection for the club. Easily one of the most gifted players to have donned the red and blue. Those last few words of the book's title say everything, really.

Have we been found out?

Sunday could be a watershed moment. Sheff Utd worked out how to beat us away - press our attaching players in numbers, swamp and attack our full backs.

Given that every PL team has loads of analysts, can’t we expect more of the same from everyone?

Have we been found out? Is our home form now going to catch up with us if our away form is now normal.

Roy's Team for Colchester?

Assuming he will leave out the "BEST" players for fear of injury, have a chance to give some experience to some youngsters and just give game time to others,,,,,, How realistic might this be for line up against Colchester?

Hennessey

Ward, Woods, Cahill, Mitchell,

Meyer, Riederwald, Kouyate, Schlupp,

Ayew, Wickham.

Would you want to "buy" the title?

There is an awful lot of doom and gloom at the moment. A lot of the criticism involves lack of investment in players, players being paid a fortune and not earning it, minimal ambition etc.

I've always considered following Palace to be a bit of a battle against the odds. We're not the most fashionable club around after all. I bought into the viewpoint that maybe one day, we might unearth a few gems and actually win something (oh for that mid/late 70's youth set up again!) but never, ever be of the opinion that any success would be anything more than fleeting. We simply will never be big enough to compete at the top table for any length of time.

So presently, we have a few bob coming in. However, it's going out the door pretty quickly too and the level at which we are currently competing means that we still aren't a big fish and it's still just as hard as it always has been for the likes of Palace.

But what if we got the sort of investment of a Manchester City or a PSG? How would you feel about buying the title?. Money no object, buy the very best. Just think what it could mean. Titles, cups, European football, a nice new shiny stand - hell a shiny new stadium! We're not talking about a one-off here. This would place Palace in the position of being a dominant force in English and European football for years to come.

Personally, I'd be tempted for less time than it's taken to write this OP. They talk about the "soul" of a club and to be honest, that Youth Cup, ZDS trophy and other assorted ephemera rather define what we are and I wouldn't sell it at any price.

Given accusations of "entitlement" and JCL support, what views on this do other BBSers have? (Poll welcome {but not Graham} if anyone wants to set one up).

The club’s ambitions

This quote from Roy just sums it up for me

“I don't think we have started particularly well in any season, but we have to accept that and we won’t be one of those teams to set the Premier League alight, we are in that bracket of teams that have to work hard to stay in the league and we understand that, and embrace that.

We think we have done ok in the last couple of seasons to get where we are and do what we have done, but we don’t expect to be elevated to another platform.”

With that level of ambition is there any wonder we are offering Benteke a new contract? If the club thinks that’s the best striker for us then I am speechless, I would rather let him go on a free than pour more good money after bad

When goals are scored against us

Another goal given up in the first few minutes of a half this past week. Is there a resource that shows over time when goals have been scored? It seems to me that we have given up more than our share in the first and last five minutes of halves and in TAO.

Jamie Oliver restaurants closed

I did try but couldn't find anything about this.

Documentary about multi-millionaire Jamie Oliver's career on tonight.

Crap-load of TV series, aligned with cookbooks over the years (they seriously took a photo-shoot with him propped up on all his books). This includes the 'teaching poor Rotherham people to cook' priced at £25 a pop.

Restaurants now all closing with 1400 losing jobs. He did 'cry' (probably using the 'tweezers through the pocket' technique)

And the program ends with new series "Jamie's Meat-free Meal" starting September 2nd :jerkit:

We've just moved to the seaside. And moved tons of books that haven't been unboxed since the last move in 2002.

I now know I have four of the Rev's books. I've got "The Coppell Campaigns", "Crystal Palace A-Z", "Centurions" and "Player by Player"

Does anyone have a list of all his books? Amazon and Google are unhelpful.

Which ones have you got?

Top palace game

mardi 20 août 2019

With all the doom and gloom, and the great post of maybe why some of us are disillusioned by Jason. It made me think back to my favourite ever Palace games. I’m sure there is already a thread somewhere but thought it might be better to start again to remind ourselves of why we support Palace.

For me I can’t decide between two. The first with my Father was Palace v Liverpool at Villa in the FA cup semi. We wore our grins for a week after that. The second was again v Liverpool, but this time with my son, on the evening of Crystanbul. He was so excited he simply couldn’t sleep and we went over and over the game that night. Ahhh happy days.

Benteke - Camarasa - Cahill - Owners - Zaha - Management

I used to play football a long time ago. I scored some goals for Aston Villa and then Liverpool bought me. Jurgen the German didn’t like me so I got sold to Crystal Palace. Did ok for a season but.......

I know there have probably been many posts on Benteke but I feel a need to post after many years to vent frustration that I can normally manage. At an astronomical £120k a week he will cost us more points this season than any other player (please prove me wrong, I even put you in my fantasy team :wallbash: ). He is done, finished, kaput.

I have friends that are Newcastle fans and they say they want to be relegated just to piss Ashley off. At the age of 35 I am now starting to warm to that idea for Palace. I’m not going to individually single people out behind the scenes but something in the business is not working. I do not have enough information. However, Chairman, directors, DF, Roy, cleaners. Something in this business is bad. For Zaha to want to jump ship to Everton shows things are not right.

Camarasa not even making the bench? (He’s in my fantasy team as well annoyingly) wtf is that about? Apparently he even wasn’t injured.

Why the **** is Cahill not starting ahead of Dann? Anyone?

As fans, we bank role the club. They get loadsamoney from sky but without us they are nothing. Why are they not more transparent about behind the scenes going’s on. All got too big for their boots. Parish comes across in the media as slimy, I used to really like him but I don’t believe a word he says anymore. Why can’t people just be honest?

Roy is weird. He’s experienced but how can he not see after 70 minutes against Sheffield United the problem was that they wanted to win? Forgot the team we had, they wanted to win. They ran, tried, they gave it everything. Went to the preseason game at Forest and left at half time. Was a disgrace. No one could be bothered and it’s spilled over into the new season.

Wilf knows that he’s aboard a sinking ship. He was ready to jump on HMS Everton. That’s surely enough to convince any Palace fan that things are not right behind the scenes.

Rant over. No need for replies, my 3 yearly Palace self counselling session is over.

Have we, as fans, lost our mojo?

Went to Sheffield for the weekend, first game for a number of months due to personal circumstances, paid the extra expense of an hotel and probably spent more than most people on the trip.

Travelled on my own and as I parked up got talking to a Blade who had parked behind me. Next minute he's inviting me into a pub close to the ground for a couple of pints, where we met his son and a mate. Over 10 years out of the premier these guys were oosing passion for their club, the game to start and the chance to compete back at the top.

I compare this to us as fans at the game. First away game of the season eas always meant to be a bit special. Pretty good atmosphere most of the first half, Nothing at the start of the 2nd half matched by a sleeping defence and then nothing more, nor a sound!

I appreciate the performance etc was shit, but we did nothing and I mean nothing to help them raise their game and get back into it.

As the half continued you could hear the tension mounting on the terraces, which no doubt extended to the players on the pitch but still no positive encouragement from us to shake them into a performance.

Once upon a time, winning or losing, we would be consistently chanting, puffing out our chests and letting the home supporters know we were still here and behind them, especially when falling behind.
Im sure you have seen situations where vocal encouragement have seen players react positively and get back into the game and that game was one that we could have turned around or got something out of.

We used to have a reputation as being especially vocal away from home and part of going away was the atmosphere and that collectiveness but sadly that appears to only last 20-30 minutes at the start of the game at most nowadays.

Are we waiting to be entertained, before we put any effort in as supporters? Have we been spoilt by being "established", or our "expectations to kick on ", have we forgotten what we once were?

Watching Palace in NYC

I'm going to NYC on Thursday, staying in Midtown (on Times Square) - can anyone recommend a good bar/pub in that area to go and watch the Man United vs Palace game on Saturday? I haven't been there since 2012, so I'm not sure if the places I went to before will still be there, so any recommendations are appreciated.

Players yet to hit their peak

Was thinking driving to work this morning, ignoring for a minute tactics, managers, even Palace to an extent, how many players from our squad are likely to reach their peak or their best years, either at CPFC or another club in the future?

For me, I really can''t think of many with a couple that are minor possibilites with that:

Meyer
Camarassa
Zaha
Riedewald

How many are arguably (I say that as I think a few could easily be past their peak years, but perhaps not hit that steady decline possibly) at the peak of their abilities and probably the best they can be:

Kelly
PVA
Luka
Kouyate
Guiata

Then on the flip side, how many have gone past their peak and are only heading one way (injuries being a contributing factor perhaps):

Ward
Dann (Injuries and age)
Tomkins (Injuries)
Sakho (Injuries)
Cahill
McCarthur
McCarthy (Injuries)
Townsend
Ayew
Benteke (Injuries)
Wickham (Injuries)
Henderson
Hennessey

Worrying that there are so few players that will ever be any better than I have perhaps already seen, and many were at their peak playing for us.

So how many players do you think are likely to become better players in the future and perhaps move up the leagues (not just as we move down them ;))?

Being palace.

lundi 19 août 2019

Fellow eagles

This is a bit of a long rambling post just for the heads up.

After that poor, abject defeat on sunday, which was devoid of passion, tactics and overall effort, there seems to be a bad feeling around the club at this moment in time, a bad feeling of which I am part of.

Tonight I streamed the Utd v Wolves game, and watching AWB being his usual class self got me thinking, not for the players but for us fans... what does it mean to be palace?

Without wanting to sound over dramatic, as after all it is just a game, I just want to give my two pennies worth about a few things leading up to where we are today as a collective mind going through the ups and downs of supporting our local or as some might say, unfashionable team, down the years.

My first game was a 3-1 win over ipswich town in 93. Dad being a diehard tractor boy living in penge at the time, couldn't resist the chance to see his team play at a local ground while taking his 8 year old son along for a jolly.
Sitting on those metal railings watching Eddie Mcgoldrick and Chris Armstrong taking the piss and sending his team back to suffolk with tails firmly between legs was enough for my young eyes. I loved it. The colours red and blue just made sense to me.
Fast forward a few years and I'm sitting in next to my uncle and his mates with my first season ticket, lower holmesdale block c, row 33. The Francis and Burley years. Ashley Cole on loan and Steve Staunton from the halfway line, Dean Austin in defence and Clinton, Forssell and Freedman scoring goals and giving me bragging rights at school on a monday amongst my millwall and charlton mates (brighton distant even come into it back then).
On the pitch was pretty dire usually, but I didn't care, I was 15 and having a cheeky pint in the portmanor every other saturday with the diehards.

After that, it wasnt until the year 1997 I discovered the true meaning of magic, and that manifested itself in the form of a geriatric italian named Attilio Lombardo. Despite our relegation, I'm sure to this day I've never witnessed a more talented footballer. You can keep your messi's and ronaldo's, the bald eagle came home to nest only for a fleeting moment, but those few games were enough to get me off my seat again for years to come.

Fast forward again and after another few turbulent years (and another yo yo club relegation from the top tier 6years before... AJ we salute you!!) we assembled a team of misfits and journeymen that, against all odds, won a memorable playoff final against that perennial thorn in our side that is watford, to reclaim our rightful place back in the prem. All that off the back of Hillsborough and stockport county...

Well since then its been a non stop slugfest in what many say is the toughest league in the world. My favourite goal? Easy. O'keefe v sunderland. Went to the cherry tree after the game and everyone was buzzing as was I. It wasnt the goal itself but what it represented. It felt like... lets ******* do this!!!!!!!

Even signing jason puncheon, who was the year below me at school, granted he was good at football but a proper dickhead to boot, I found it in my heart to take him in as palace royalty for a couple of years ( and yes I was there at the den for the hat trick)...

Soon as we started signing respected international footballers like cabaye and sakho for big money, bolasie and zaha on the wings playing who can do the most tricks against the oppositions full backs, the fans out singing our opponents game after game.... it all became a bit surreal for a moment.

Then reality hit. And I always say I can put it down to one moment. The pardew dance.

Yes we have pulled some great results out of the bag since then and punched above our weight ever since. But that was the sign of things to come. The wickham injury. The sale of bolasie. Our leaders Jedinak and murray unceremoniously shown the exit door. Pardew soon followed but the damage was done.

One name I have intentionally left out from all this thus far is our chairman, Steve Parish.
In my humble opinion, we are talking about a guy who its well documented grew up, like me, supporting the palace. Unlike me he has managed to accumulate a fortune of over 50 million pounds. Its a lot of money that's for certain, but in terms of 'modern' football chairman, he's no more than a yes man. It's clear to me he is out of his depth compared to those who bankroll the everton and wolves money train, amongst others. To me, this is not a reason to despise the bloke.

In some peoples eyes, we get some russian oligarch, dodgy chinese hustler or arab oil billionaire jump on-board and send us into the stratosphere, become the chelsea of south london, and live happily ever after... well that ain't me.

Why? Because I believe the football bubble will self implode at some point in the not to distant future. And when/if it does, you can find me, warm flat beer in hand, cheering on my local team down the local park.

Viva las aguilas!

When will win our 1st league game ?

When will win our 1st league game of 2019/20 season ?

Danny Cowley

As a club we really need to start looking to the future.
Despite how great a job Roy has done under the restraints he is still out of the contract at the end of this season and a parting of the ways would be in the best interests of all parties now whether it's now or the end of the season.

Before it's too late though surely we need to be sounding out Danny Cowley and his management team from Lincoln. Performing absolute miracles there's and it can't go unnoticed much longer. He deserves a chance at a team in the top league and would love to see us give him that opportunity. Even if it was announced that he would join in the summer we can then all get behind Roy and ultimately thank him for the job he has done, but Danny Cowley for me is the kind of manager who could be a great fit for Palace.

Let's act now before it's too late!

Possession

I saw a stat from last season that was fairly startling. I have now forgotten exactly what it was (not helpful I realise!), but it was something along the lines of us only winning one game where we had more possession than the opposition. From memory it was something like 1 from 15.

Maybe no surprise therefore that we had more possession than Sheffield Utd yesterday.

The strange thing is that Roy seems to value ball retention very highly. This is at the expense of risk-taking. It's why we don't cross the ball much - he prefers players to recycle possession across the edge of the box rather than tossing it in there and risking giving the ball away. Surely though we shouldn't fear giving the ball away, because the evidence is that we're more effective when we don't have it much.

On the plus side we won't see a lot of the ball in the next couple of away games. Hopefully we will seem some more positive performances as a result!

Build to Rent

Good grief. If this is the solution I'm not sure what the question is.

Thanks here to the excellent fromthemurkydepths blog. From £1850 a month for two bed flats and from £2450 a month for three beds in Deptford. (For the benefit of long moved expats Deptford isn't quite what it was in the seventies). There's going to be 650 built by L&G in Woolwich too. Blimey.

Wilf v AWB

Wilf v AWB - Saturday 24 Aug

This should be an interesting battle with both knowing each other's game so well.

Benteke blames teammates for goal drought

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Christian Benteke has blamed his shambolic goal drought on his Crystal Palace team-mates.

The blundering Belgium striker has become a laughing stock in the Premier League following just one goal in 19 appearances last season.

This followed three goals in 31 appearances the season before to make a mockery of Palace's decision to sign him from Liverpool in a £27m deal in 2016.

Benteke, 28, has also started the new campaign in similar fashion after drawing blanks against Everton and Sheffield United.

The misfiring hitman was off-target again in Palace's shock defeat at the Blades on Sunday to leave Roy Hodgson's men with just one point and no goals to their name so far.

But Benteke reckons the team are not creating enough chances for him to convert and he said: "It was a frustrating afternoon out there, not just for me but for the team.

"We went with the mindset to get the three points and we did not get that. We didn't deserve to win to be honest, if you look at our second half.

"I think that is our problem (creating chances in front of goal). We don't create enough chances. I think it is about the animation, we have to be more available for each other and we have to work on it.”

Fewest goals in a PL season avoidance calculator

The current lowest goals haul for a season stands at 20, set by Derby County.

It's a mouthwatering prospect that our blunt band of bumbling fools could even outdo the Ram's magnificently pathetic campaign. Hodgson has found a quite unique formula for restricting the creation of goal scoring opportunities. Could we be about to witness the least creative campaign of a top flight team ever? History awaits my fellow Eagles...

Positives vs Negatives

Positives

We do have players yet to play this season who have the potential to make a difference

Cahill, Camarasa, Sahko, Tomkins.

Young players such as Woods.

Negatives

Depth and quality of squad simply not PL quality.

Hodgson is scarred from his England days (especially how it ended) and is now a "Safety first" manager

This safety first approach negates our main strengths in the playing squad and hinders some of our attacking potential through a team formation with too many defensive midfield players and asking players such as AT MM and WZ to take up defensive shape before they look to provide attacking options.

Lack of diversity in the playing abilities of our strikers

One of the most inept transfer windows in PL history.

The fact that the Club success in staying in the PL has been largely based on individual brilliance reliant on YB AT and WZ has papered over the cracks in the weaknesses elsewhere.

This reliance on individuals has also resulted in Palace becoming a team with no playing DNA. We have no recognisable style. Do we press high? Do we dominate possession? Do we sit back and counter attack? Do we attack with width with FB pushing high? Do we play percentage football hitting key areas with crosses?

Are we good enough to stay up? Yes are we better than 3 other teams? Probably

Do we have real problems? Definitely.

What is our playing style?

dimanche 18 août 2019

It is clear to see from today's game that the team is devoid of any form of attacking plan or blueprint that can win us football matches on a semi-consistent basis.
It seems to me that for years now it hasn't varied much from give Wilf the ball in wide areas and hope he does something whether that be beating his man and getting a shot off or finding a pass. On many occasions he will be brought down resulting in penalties of dangerous free kicks. After all, penalties did contribute almost 20% of our league goals last season.

The media love to go on about how we are this wonderful counter-attacking team and put our impressive away record from last season solely down to this. When you actually look at the facts and analyse them, the majority of our away goals did not come from rapid, dynamic breaks in which runners were bursting forward with intent. They merely came from our predominantly 'uncreative' midfield have more space to pick out passes and more leeway when making cutting, incisive passes. This was as a result of opposition teams not being as deep as they often are at Selhurst. Although it brought us success on the road last season it doesn't constitute a 'style of play' and it requires us to work around Wilf and hope he is on his game rather than him excel in a system that suits the team as a whole. This is worrying considering he probably wont be here after this season is up.

You can go up and down the premier league and looking at sides and the vast majority have systems and styles of play that they sign players in accordance to. For example our opponents today Sheffield United have invested in Olly mcburnie who fits into their crossing game but is also mobile, can link up play well and bring their more creative midfield players into the game. Others such as Wolves play expansively at home with a constant eye on making sure they are togther and compact when defending making them hard to beat but also allowing them to score enough goals to win games.

This is intrinsically linked to our recruitment policy. How can the club invest sensible money into the right sort of players when they have failed to build a foundation as to how we win games? Our home problems will not be sorted out until we inject some creativity into our industrious workmanlike midfield and address the over reliance on Wilf having to produce magic to win games.

WTF is wrong with Townsend?

Has been completely useless in both matches so far. Last weeke was poor and today he was total toilet. It can't just be playing in front of Ward instead of Wan-Bissaka because he did that a few times last season.

ISTR a couple of years ago his having to be rebooted by Sammy Lee. Looks like a somilar procedure is required.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Manchester United (a)

Early doors and we’re still licking our wounds, but why not. Let’s look forward rather than back, and have a bit of fun.

Need to be more dynamic against United, we need to win second balls to beat the so-called big clubs, and the team we had against Sheffield United won’t do that.

Guiata
Ward - Cahill - Dann - van Aanholt
Milivojevic
Kouyate - Schlupp
Zaha ————————— Townsend
Ayew

Subs: Hennessey, Kelly, McCarthy, McCarthur, Meyer, Ayew, Wickham

Potentially Camarasa to come into the bench for someone if he’s fit.

Cahill I think will have the desire and add an oomph to the defense.

van Aanholt to start because we have no other option.

Kouyate and Schlupp to try and add a bit of bite to the midfield, Meyer and McCarthur just won’t do if they’re gonna perform like they did.

Zaha on the right because we absolutely don’t want him against Wan-Bissaka.

Th fact that Wan-Bissaka is playing for them, against us... makes me want to cry.

[WC2014] 3pm games,which local pub?

vendredi 16 août 2019

Just been told by landlord that his pub Patrick's Beckenham got caught and won't be showing the 3pm Saturday games anymore :-(
He paid a fortune to a firm that blocked out all replays and didn't show any build up etc to avoid any premier League logos/music etc ,guess that ain't enough!
I've got firestick loaded up so I can watch Indoors but I like pub atmosphere
Is anyone still showing these games in South London?
Thnx in advance,pm me please if hush hush

Peter Fonda RIP

Actor and director Peter Fonda, who rose to fame with his role in "Easy Rider," died Friday. He was 79.

Fonda died of respiratory failure due to lung cancer at his Los Angeles home.

Pretty sure I saw him a couple of years ago coming out of a coffee shop in Venice, CA. Sure looked like him, and had the air of a celebrity about him, and looked in pretty good nick.

A great idea this app is you can simply send three words to your mates and they can see exactly where you are. No more, “can you see Mac Donald’s?” Also if ever you get stuck the emergency services can locate you. Some great random names pop up

MP's changing parties.....

Dr Sarah Wollaston has become the latest MP to change party.
Initially a Conservative, then a Change UK or whatever that shower were called has transferred over the Lib Dems due to their stance on Brexit.

Totnes voted Tory and Leave won the referendum vote there. Dr Wollaston was elected on the manifesto to out carry that result.
Surely there must be some new legislation brought in place that automatically means a by-election will take place.

Utter hypocrite, I am sure she once said ( happy to be corrected ) that all defections should result in a by-election?:moo2:

Glasses

First time I've needed glasses, and been wearing them for a couple of weeks now.

Apologies for the basic question, but...

They don't feel particularly uncomfortable or tight at all, but I have noticed they are leaving marks on the nose and, more pertinently, indents in the head behind my ears. Is this normal? A sign they are a tad too tight?

Egbo

Just noticed that Egbo has left Borussia Monchengladbach and joined Darmstadt on a free transfer. A mate of mine is a season ticket holder there, so I will ask him to let me know how he gets on.

It's a shame though, because you would think he might have had an opportunity with us this season if he had hung around. It looks like the move to Germany hasn't quite worked out yet.

A place where you park your car at home

BIG argument going on in my household. Started by me being told I'm wrong and please pronounce properly. I then checked with Hey Google and Alexa and they both pronounced my way. Still arguing the other half insisted that they were programed wrong and we needed to as people. So a building where you park your car is a garAGE or a garIGE ignore spelling just pronounciation.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Sheffield United away

Guaita
Ward. Dann. Kelly. PVA
Luka. McArthur
Townsend. Camarasa. Meyer
Zaha

Obviously risky and an argument to keep Benteke as a target man. I’d stick with the back 4 as they played well. Can’t see Roy going with this but I’d like to see Camarasa brought in ASAP.

PL results prediction league

Would people be interested in taking part in a weekly prediction league? I had a brief look through different forums and couldn't find anything similar, although apologies if I have missed it if such a thing exists.

I was thinking of doing a league where you could predict results by the round of fixtures each week, getting points for accurately predicting the result (win, lose, draw) and also points for getting the exact result right, and possibly extra points for choosing the top scorer during each round of games.

The idea has come a bit late, I would've liked to start at week 1 of the Premier League but I have been a bit busy.

I thought that whoever wins the prediction league come end of the season could choose a charity of their choice, which Palace fans could then donate too?

Just an idea and thought it'd be a bit of fun. I'd appreciate any ideas/feedback too.

Suggestion: Let’s help Dougie

Ok so we all agree we need to strengthen the squad and screwed up by not getting in a right back or striker this window. I reckon between us we could unearth some amazing options for Dougie to investigate so who are your must have and should look ats?

Watching the Man Utd game in Prague.

I'm going to be in Prague for the Man Utd game. Can anyone recommend a decent bar/pub to watch it.

Cheers.

How will we cope with Sheff Utd system?

Wilder is a very strong tactician - and they play with ‘over lapping centre backs’ which overloads the defence, and overcomes traditional organised two banks of four.

May create space for us to counter - but will our makeshift defence and sometimes dodginess at full back get taken to the cleaners?

Matchday Uploads

dimanche 11 août 2019

This season I'm going to try to upload all our games in full - assuming that they record OK. I shall also upload our MOTD highlights as I did last season.

The Everton game files are now up (unfortunately the first five minutes of the whole game didn't record properly for some reason), however, I have changed the password to the Google Drive account so if anyone wants it you will have to post here to let me know.

Can we have alerts?

Other boards often have an alert system. If someone quotes you, or tags you, or whatever, you get an alert.
It makes it easy to keep track of conversations and interactions.

Any chance of implementing that on the BBS? Or am I missing an equivalent feature or something?

FYP Podcast

First of the season and summed up how I feel really . Selsey was saying that it was like the beginning of last season as in we lacked a decent striker who could score . He also made the point that the latter part of the season we were excellent with Sako an option off the bench ( sometimes ) and Batshuayi who gave us movement and goals up front .
He had hoped that the Club realised we needed a different type of Striker who could score and was not purely a target man . He also said he ( like many ) did not want AWB to be sold and found it incredible that in all that time we were unable to find any right back( even as cover for Ward )
Seemed dismayed we had not strengthened where it is was clearly needed , leaving us with an unbalanced squad . A winger who could take on players ( cover out wide ) , a decent striker and replacement for AWB . If i recall his take on things , it was that we will be relying on RH more than ever to dig out results , while again rushing around in January to get a right back and forward .

Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

The contestants will be seeded for the group draw (based on overall performances in BM competitions).

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.

Remember fair play. Duplicating you’re opponents bets are not allowed.

A view from the upper holmesdale

Was strange being in the upper tier after so many years in Block E. Block E sounded loud from where me and my dad are, especially in the first half.

Much better view (being a bit to the side actually helps), great leg room, easier to get out and better facilities.

But you’re not as close to the action and atmosphere not as good. Also a lot more moaners. Some blokes close to us spent most of the game moaning and even moaning about the HF singing!!

So was nice to have a change and a lot of plus points but still miss the old seats. Was glad that at least the noise from there was good though (but still think the HFs could have done more to reach out to those that lost their seats in Block E, but on the other hand they have done a huge amount to improve the atmosphere and put a lot of effort in).

Suggestion: Mario Balotelli

Free agent a striker and a goal scorer surely he has to be worth considering and taking a gamble on ?

2019 Summer transfer window closes. Are you happy?

The strategy was to sell our lowest earner AWB as we didn't really need an amazing right back, and use the money on a lined up good replacement right back, and use the rest on some pacy young attacking players to improve our threat in the final third. So everyone's happy aren't they?

Travel Information: CPFC v Everton Sat 10th Aug

Just a heads up that travel by rail will may be severely disrupted especially on longer routes and those coming from the Midlands, North and North East.

At present (1955hrs Friday) Kings Cross and St Pancras stations are effectively closed to trains due to power supply problems possibly until the end of the day. This means that it is likely some long distance trains may not be in place at the end of the day to start their normal services into London on Saturday morning.

On Saturday high winds are also forecast so there is a risk of trees coming down on to lines which affects all travel routes. Lines supplied by overhead power wires are especially vulnerable and it may be possible that widespread speed restrictions may be in place to protect the wires during Saturday.

Generally if you are travelling by train Saturday check National Rail and be prepared to make allowances especially if travelling long distances.

Massive Power Cuts

Widespread cuts this evening particularly SW. Power surge on the grid possible. Quite a few trains stuck. My lift stopped for almost a minute which was mildly worrying but managed to get over the terrible shock with a pint (and more now).

People reporting no internet or mobile phones for almost 20 minutes. Phew. The Daily Express called it.

Anyone else got horror stories.

LIVERPOOL V NORWICH

Fanzone

Aiming to meet my friend and his son in the Fanzone but I wont have my ticket till I pick it up off someone else just before the match. Do you need a ticket to get in?

I appreciate the information.

Right back options

Kelly is probably the most obvious option to fill in at right back, if/ when he's not needed to start in the middle.

But who else do we think could fill in there if needed?

Tomkins has done in the past but could any of our many midfielders do a job there too? Do we think Schlupp could adapt to playing on the opposite side?

Maybe we could Ayew? He can tackle fairly well ;)

Does anyone know who plays there for the U23s?

Press Conference Live: Pre Everton press conference - 13.30.

Will be interesting what Roy says about the Summer dealings and Wilf.

My predication will be that he's a bit spikey to the Journalists.

"We have what we have and we have to deal with it"

"Doug and Steve worked tirelessly".

"I'm glad the window is shut TBH and we can concentrate on what we should be".

Your expectations for the season

As the title says, what's your expectations for the season?

Given the poor transfer window I don't think expectations will be too high. I'll personally be happy with survival, four points over the slags down South and a decent cup run.

Discussion: Transfer perspective and comparison

So we didn’t get that big signing we all wanted but let’s look at it from a wider perspective and compare with the 3 clubs promoted.

Sheff Utd; Luke Freeman - never tried or tested at PL, Phil Jagielka - experienced but not played much last year (our Cahill), Ravel Morrison - who knows what you’ll get with him, Ben Osborn - never tested at PL, Lys Mousset - didn’t light up the PL with Bournemouth, Callum Robinson - never tested at PL, Oli McBurnie - not tested at PL, Dean Henderson - promising GK see how he goes, Mohamed Besic - few PL games but not really tested

Norwich City; Josip Drmic - hardly played a game since 2013, Sam Byram - handful of games in the PL and a few injuries, Patrick Roberts - not really tested at PL and okay loan spells, Ibrahim Amadou - Who?, Ralf Farhrmann - experienced GK in Germany

Aston Villa; Tom Heston - experienced Gk, Jota - not tested at PL, Bjorn Engels - no PL experience, Kortney Hause - no PL experience, Tyrone Mings - not tested much at PL and several injuries, Marvelous Nakamba - no PL experience, Trezeguet - no PL experience, Matt Targett - some PL experience, Wesley - no PL experience, Anwar el Ghazi - no PL experience, Ezra Konsa - no PL experience, Douglas Luiz - no PL experience

Crystal Palace; Gary Cahill - experienced and won every domestic and European trophy not played much but will be a good leader in the team, James McCarthy - PL experience and an FA Cup winner yes he had a broken leg but hopefully that’s sorted, Jordan Ayew - happy to be a squad player knows he will be behind Will and Andros, Victor Camarasa - 31 games last year for Cardiff so knows what the PL is about, Stephen Henderson - good 3rd choice GK will help push the other two.

When you look at it they may not be exciting signings but they are players who fit into the squad, don’t have egos and know the league. Look at Roy’s previous signings when he was at Fulham and West Brom and he brought in experienced players with no egos who got the job done. Also it was those experienced players who Helped Roy get Fulham to 7th

Employment legal question - manager on call

Apologies for the slightly niche question, but I’m hoping that one of the legal bods on here may be able to assist.

I work for a technology company, managing a small team of hands on techies. As part of the role I am the on call escalation point for my team, who are on an on call rota. This has been the case for years and is fine. However, I have now been placed on a formal rota for management on call, and am expected to respond to a call and be online managing the incident within 5 minutes of being called which effectively means for 1 week in 4 I can’t leave the house.

There are no formal UK policies at the company which cover response times and I do not get paid for being on call, so do I have any legal rights not to do it?

Thanks.

Zaha... played

jeudi 8 août 2019

Only one Everton bid for him (£52M).

None of the top six willing to bid more than £40M on him.

Unsettled him, made him too big for his boots, believed his own hype - he won't play Saturday (Everton's dream).

He'd be played. What an idiot.

Won't boo him mind.

Bring back Ib596

That's nice eh? Relatively new poster seems to have good knowledge of all things Palace and yet appears to be banned for calling someone a prick. When I read some of the vile things that people want to happen to Wilf simply because he handed in a transfer request which go uncensored, I find myself surprised by what seem to be double standards.

Am I mistaken in thinking that this site is welcoming to all Palace fans?

Ignore the drama - it distorts everything

The popularity of football appears to be at an all-time high. So much so that intense interest in it goes way beyond the match and match day and we end up with 24/7 coverage. Indeed, I think we are way past saturation point. As pardew's shorts eruditely described it the other day - there seems to be no end of column inches and blogs to be filled daily. Where there is no drama, it shall be created, shaped and embellished by amatuer and professional commentators alike. Whether it be for clicks, reputation or commercial (betting) interest, it doesn't matter everyone gets whipped into a frenzy. This is most acute in the transfer windows (the summer one in particular) where there is little actual football to go on. Despite protestations of the majority that this is all just sky-induced bullshit to stimulate skybet markets and to create thousands of people desperately checking their website and channels for little snippets - most cannot help but get caught up in it. I think that this has undoubtedly fueled much of the hyperbole around our own ttansfer window (and by extension a look over the fence at other clubs'). Despite it not being a particularly brilliant one for us, there has still been some decent business done and, just like the last 4 or 5 years where people seem to lose their minds and make some wildly pessimistic predictions off the back of it - I feel certain that again we'll finish somehwere between 10th and 15th. This won't stop the same circus ******* with everyone's minds in Jan or next summer though. Plus ça change.

Anyway, here is some context to a 5/10 rating that I'd give out window.

Context

Firstly, to take issue with the drama. In years gone by, transfers were very much an adjunct to the football itself. Players would be bought, sold and loaned all the way through until March where a temporary close to the end of season would soon pass and it was business as usual. This meant that teams did not have to try and plan for 4-6 months at a time and consider every contigency. Lose 2 fullbacks to longer term injuries? Well buy or loan one when that happens. Now, unless every contingency is planned for each July/August or Jan, the club is accused of 'negligence' and being a 'shambles'. Hyperbolic nonsense. Of coursr whilst everyone is planning for several contingencies like this itnis easy to take your eye off of the mounting wage bill. A decent PL squad player will earn £60k / week upwards!. What about when everyone is fit? You have other headaches then. Trying to shoe-horn all this intona short window is madness BUT it creates drama. It is part of the product. Now, unless a team adds 5, 6, 7 + new faces and largely replace their starting XI they are 'going backwards' and/or 'showing no ambition'. A tired cliche but one that gets trotted out nontheless. It was always a case that over the summer there might be 2 or 3 signings. Now that is seen as 'pathetic'. Whatever happened to shaping a team?

Our signings, our squad and Roy

The headlines for everyone right now is that we did not sign a RB or a ST. I can see that and do share that sense of frustration. However, I think that both areas do have cover of sorts. Firstly, at RB we have Ward, Kelly and Tomkins who can all play there. Ideally we would have gone in for an AWB replacement but I do not think it an absolute necessity that so many seem to. We have managed with the AWB money to turn serious profit on a player to balance the accounts. Seems sensible enough to me. It also appears we had 3 or 4 RB targets who, for one reason or another, did not sign. If that is the case - so be it. We can get by with Ward and Kelly until Jan. There is no use signing anyone for the sake of it. That is how you **** yourself for future transfers.

ST. We have been needing to freshen up something here for some time. That said, we seemingly have a fit Benteke who is impressing on the training ground more than he has in some time with 2 pre-season goals to his name. It is a big question mark over him but he is still a big earner who we need to put trust in to make his significant outlay worth it. With Wickham also fit for an extneded period now he offers competition. Ayew and Zaha (I'll get to him later) make up thr final options up top. I dare say had Wilf been sold then we would have made a signing or 2 in thks area.

Of the ones who came in, Ayew comes in as a good squad option. Cahill looks like he could be a very good addition, McCarthy can hopefully add options to the middle and Camarasa can operate in the #10 role or out wide. He could be the creative spark we have missed. All these in for minimal capital outlay looks like shrewd business to me even if not marquee-esque headline-grabbing transfers.

I cannot quite get my head around people saying our team / squad is seriously imbalanced. We have:

GK

Guaita
Henno
Henderson

RB options

Ward
Kelly
Tomkins

LB options

PvA
Schlupp
Mitchell

CB options

Sakho
Tomkins
Cahill
Dann
Kelly
Kouyate
Woods

CM options

Luka
McArthur
McArthy
Koutaye
Meyer
Camarasa
Dreher

Wide options

Andros
Schlupp
Meyer
Camarasa
Zaha
Ayew

ST options

Benteke
Wickham
Zaha
Ayew

I don't think that is too shabby at all. Especially as Roy likes to play compact and narrow. In that context the incomings seem logical and would explain why Roy appears quite sanguine (even happy) about our transfer business.

One thing I will say, though, is that it seems very odd that we did not use our 2 domestic loan slots!?

Expectations

To return to the earlier point about the window and the drama it creates - expectations are often quite wild and i consistent. On one hand you have calls for ambition (which at best guess is forking out for proven players as good as guranteed to improve the team). The problem is they are so sought after only the top clubs get them in their absolute prime. So, I hear you say, sign hot prospects with potential. Very well, except these are not proven players and you pay an absolute premium for that potential that may not materialise. It may well be a risk worth taking but a risk it is nonetheless. Alternatively, you go for proven perhaps just the wrong side of thier prime. Perhaps less risky (as our 7 PL years may testify) but you then have the concern / whinge about high contracts and little sell on value. Each club has their strategy. Each has pros and cons but the problem is that many fans expectations (fueled by the media) are generally a bit unreasonable and whatever the club does, they'll draw heavy criticism from one quarter or another.

To add to this, our window shutting earlier than the rest of Europe + the changed TV rights packages across various leagues means the PL does not have the same level of advantage that it once did. We cannot necessarily blow others out of the water with the wages or transfer fees. No wonder players wait to see what offers come in elsewhere. The wage package is likely to be similar. We do not have the advantage of being a team challenging for silverware to tempt some better players across. Tougher market.

Which brings me to the money. I think it is being made out by many that we are skint. I suppose that depends on your definition but we are not so hamstrung by FFP anymore so much as we are not wanting to reall keep running at a loss. SP has always been clear on this. The fact other clubs are not so worried about that is not for us to concern ourselves with. AWB money wipes out the operating loss for last years accounts. To me that is more important than finding a new RB to satiate the here and now. Living within our means over a 2-3 year cycle has to be the main priority.

Dougie & the board

A lot has been said by a lot of ppl who know little to nothing of the exact dynamics. What seems clear since DF came in is that by and large we have spent little each window. Looking for freebies and structured deals. This is likely not a coincidence. I imagine his brief is to secure the best players possible for as little outlay as possible and on that front I think he has done OK in what must be a very tough market. The prices right now are insane. I also suspect that we now have several sets of eyes onneach potential deal. I suspect this can and does cause hesitation as there'll be several opinions. I am sure we miss out on some targets because of this but I also hope that means each deal gets closer analysis and we should see less **** ups than success stories.

Wilf

Finally, Wilf. Many word have been said on this and I stand by
all I said on it yesterday. However, he remains and we have ti see how the next few months go.

Firstly, cash generatee from his sale + wage release woyld have seen us make a big signing or 2. Of that I am sure. I also think we were not expecting AWB to go this summer and so we somewhat priced Zaha out of a move as we could not lose both at the same time.

A lot depends on if he gets his head down or not. If he does then we re-evaluate in Jan and he might just get the move he really wants and that his talent deserves. I think he is too competitive to not try for us, but that will be the most interesting thing for us these coming months.

To conclude, I suspect this season will feel familiar. Some cracking performances and results, some good, some indifferent, some poor and some shocking. 10th - 15th finish. Rinse and repeat. What we must all try to do is not live constantly in the quest for instant gratification. Football is not really that way for most fans of most clubs - certainly not Palace!
