I think of this a lot. Always I have a reply, but realize there may have been one perfect deployment of a word or phrase that would have won the day and, indeed, all time.
For instance, tonight on the subway I was asked by a young man "Are you white?"
My reply, "Do I look like I might be?"
He moved on rather quickly and there was no real danger, but then the topic post set deeply into my mind.
