Southampton have a better training ground, stadium, manager and playing staff than us, not to mention more seasons in the Premier League/top-flight and a major honour (FA Cup) under their belts.
Yet they are about to lose Koeman to Everton and quite possibly see another exit of some of their top players.
Each time they hit the heights, reality strikes and they find themselves having to do a bit of re-building. At best it seems like 2 steps forward, 1 step back.
So for those with massive ambition / expectations for Palace, a smaller club with much to do to match Southampton, certainly in infrastructure terms, what can we realistically achieve over a 5 year period without an Oligarch or Sheikh behind us (which would disgust most of us i reckon).
In the context of Saints (and now possibly even Leicester with Vardy possibly going), a Cup Final apperance is a massive, massive achievement; as will continued mid-table finishes. If we add well to our pretty decent first XI this summer and get something going the vultures will circle and we will face the same issues as Southampton.
So What? Well I suppose let's not look too far ahead, enjoy the ride and if and when we drop down for a season or 2, enjoy the change of scenery and not be too bothered about it. Not sure we will ever consistently be able to get top 8 finishes in the Prem so let's be up for the cups and celebrate 40 points when they come.
