26 Years? Unlikely.

One of the main things I am taking solace in in the aftermath of saturday's crushing and deflating defeat is the hope that it will not be another 26 years until we reach the final of another major tournament. In all likelihood, we will have a number of opportunities to reach the final of a major tournament and, hopefully, put these ghosts to rest and actually win something. How have I come to that conclusion? Well, history.

In the 26 years between losing against United at Wembley and losing to United at Wembley, we have actually had a number of opportunities to reach a cup final. At times this was even despite being pretty rubbish.

1992-93 - League Cup semi finalists (lost to Arsenal)
1994-95 - FA Cup semi finalists (lost to Manchester United) and League Cup semi finalists (lost to Liverpool)
2000-01 - League Cup semi finalists (lost to Liverpool)
2011-12 - League Cup semi finalists (lost to Cardiff)

So in the 26 years that fell between our two cup final defeats we have had 5 failed semi final appearances. If we have a similar record in the next 26 years then I am confident that we will get ourselves to another major final and have the opportunity to win the major trophy that I know we all dream of seeing our side win. We are in a position of strength at the moment and, with the major sides often not prioritising the cup competitions in the early rounds, we are capable of making waves in the cups if we treat them with the respect they deserve, something I am sure we will do so long as we are a Premier League side. Bolster the squad with the quality we can now afford and give the cups a major go, even when we were rubbish we have come close! How much of a missed opportunity was Cardiff?!
