I don't think there's any point looking at our defensive frailties because judging from the team for Man Utd thread I feel 90% of the BBS has got that Hangeland needs dropping, and that Delaney, Dann, Ward and Kelly are proven as a unit - our record last season in terms of defensive qualities was excellent - full of leaders and we were rock solid despite Mariappa's deficiencies. Kelly is a definite upgrade on Mariappa and the rest of the 7 (Speroni, Ledley and Mariappa) are still here.
So we need to look at our attacking deficiencies. We badly miss a Jerome type: as a runner to go in behind and the ability to hold it up, and I hope we will revisit this in Jan. Until then, however, we are stuck with this lot. So, what can we do?
PROBLEMS
1) lack of a poacher
2) leading the line
3) lack of delivery from wide areas
4) lack of dead ball ability
For me, there are options, and all of them involve Campbell being dropped. Why? He comes way too deep, his movement in the box is not good enough, and his goalscoring record is poor. I don't think the service has been amazing, but he hasn't done enough with the opportunities he has had.
Option 1: Gayle. I feel sorry for him. He gets 10 mins at the end of games. By that time our target man Chamakh has often departed because he can only last 70 at full pelt. He's also yet to have a proper chance to play alongside Wilf in the league. I feel Zaha provides more quality balls into the box than Bolasie. He needs to have someone with him (Chamakh) to get him on the ball more. I have no doubt that with Bolasie and Zaha as wingers and Chamakh holding it up that we can get him involved.
Option 2: Zaha up front
I feel that his improved movement, skill, strength and pace is such that he could play up top. If Bolasie can Wilf definitely can because he is a much better finisher.
We can defend if at full strength. We can get the ball to the wingers and they can beat players. Bolasie needs to learn to cross once he has beaten his man. Wilf's end product is much improved. If we can get more crosses in, and improve our set pieces (I believe Mcarthur should replace Ledley to take them) and we put in our forward who can score we will score goals. I favour option 1, but option 2 could work when Chamakh goes off because I think Zaha could hold it up better on his own than Gayle.
