In all aspects of life, history has a horrible habit of repeating itself, so those with long memories this has the horrible appearance of 1980/81 all over again.
Who remembers that great exciting first season back of 1979/80 the "team of the 80's" I think we also finished 11th beating some of the top clubs and just for one day in our history being top of the top division.
We couldn't wait for the next season (1980/81)to start!! everyone old enough remember this ?
Then.......... A week before the season starts we sell our greatest ever player to Arsenal bring in Clive Allen and one of the worst keepers in our history Paul Barron. What happened next ? Got hammered up at Anfield 0-3 on the opening day
We win just one early match 5-2 vs Middleboro then the wheels fall off. Venables is sacked/ walks out after he discovers we've been trying to recruit Howard Kendall. Then we briefly have Earnie Walley in charge then half the team leave for virtually nothing to join Venables at QPR. Then Big Mal returns but by now he all but mad, results get worse, we are bottom then the Chairman announces we are in financial trouble and he is going to sell.
Along comes Noades( I'll keep my thoughts on this **** to myself) the first thing he does is fire Big Mal and brings in Dario Gradi who says from the outset "we are too far behind to stay up" (he was certainly no Pullis!!)
Results get worse Gerry Francis just walks out ignoring his contract saying the place is a joke and he is not coming back.Gradis first act was to sign a number of players two of whom regularly feature in peoples all time worst 11 namely Tommy Langley and Brian Bason.
Results get worse crowds drop to below 12000 we are relegated before Easter then Gradi is fired .
Other than that it was a quiet season:love:
