As you reach a certain age, sadly you get to go to funerals on a regular basis.
Its difficult to describe them as good somehow but todays went well and was different. The funeral was of a long term friends mother who we have known for around 30 years or so. Lovely lady and always the wisest one in the room and always had a twinkle in her eye, ready for a laugh.
The first difference was that the message was to come dressed as you feel comfortable, with no need/expectation of wearing black. I.e. it was to be a relaxed celebration rather anything formal. Many of the older ones still arrived in black by their choice but it was the first one I had attended in smart casual rather than a black suit. I would certainly vote for this and expect it to spread.
The whole service was supported by PowerPoint I know is widespread these days but it was the first funeral usage of it for us. Thankfully it had the words to the hymns displayed too because 2 were modern that we had never heard of.
Wicker coffin for this dear lady by her own request. Knowing he I suspect she thought that she was saving cash for the family by having one but apparently they are more costly than wooden ones. Again a first for us. It looked beautiful and was a good choice.
The final first for us was that the service was followed by a cremation elsewhere but this last trip was made alone, or rather with the undertakers only. Maybe this is normal, I dont know, but its the first time for ones we have attended. Just felt odd somehow.
Everything went well as could be expected and those speaking on the day did well and painted some good images of her life. Tough job for family I always think.
