Deloitte Football Money League 2024

jeudi 25 janvier 2024

Deloitte has published their annual report on the highest revenue generating football clubs in the world. The figures represent the year end 2023 accounts.

Real Madrid has taken top spot from Manchester City. In all here are 8 Premier League clubs in the top 20 with West Ham and Newcastle added to the usual suspects. Both Leicester and Leeds have dropped out from last year.

6 clubs fill position 21 to 30; Villa, Brighton, Fulham, Leeds (although they will presumabkly drop out next year following their relegation), Palace and Everton. We have dropped 2 places to 28th.

The only Premier League clubs not in the top 30 are Wolves, Bournemouth, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United.

All the revenues are in euros but based on the exchange rates used our revenues / turnover for 2023 should be c£180m. This is an impressive £20m increase on 2022. Let's hope expenditure has not risen that much.

AFC Bournemouth v Swansea City
FA Cup Fourth Round
S4CBBC iPlayerS4C Online

On this day: 24th January 1976

We beat the then Mighty Leeds United (European cup finalist the previous season) at Elland Road 1-0 in the FA cup 4th round with Dave Swindlehurst scoring.

This was for me one of the greatest performances I have ever witnessed from a Palace team. The scoreline is not a true reflection of the game, we actually murdered them. Peter Taylor and co were world class on this day. It was the day Big Mal introduced wingbacks to football; A Masterclass from a great Tactician.

Rumour: Adam Wharton Jan 2024, maybe this time around.

Nixon:

Crystal Palace are ready to make a strong £15 million move for Blackburn Rovers midfield starlet Adam Wharton.

Palace have been tracking Wharton since his debut 17 months ago and hope to agree a fee with Rovers quickly.

Eagles are going all out for Wharton who has also been chased by Newcastle United, Wolves and Brighton this season.

Wharton signed a new deal at Blackburn recently but the Palace offer will be the biggest they have had so far.

As interest grows in our academy and more people watch Palace's U21 games, I thought I'd do a thread where we can see where our ex academy players have gone to. The idea that I update the thread ongoing.

I know posters who like to keep track of our ex youth players in non league, but I thought I'd keep it to pro leagues in the OP only as it's far easier to maintain, but feel free to post in the replies if you see any of our ex academy players playing in lower leagues.

I've also included players who joined our U21/U23 teams and then left, football has probably changed a bit since 15 years ago or so, and I think clubs include their U21 teams as part of their academy now.

If I've missed anyone, please add them in the replies!

True crime podcasts/documentaries

mardi 23 janvier 2024

Along with comedy, True crime is my favourite genre.

Listening to podcasts and watching documentaries is absolutely fascinating. Trying to put yourself in the mindset of how a killer thinks or in the mindset of the authorities who are trying to catch them is compelling listening/viewing.

I first got interested in it as a child in the 80’s when a nurse Anita Cobby was brutally murdered not far from where I lived. Then I started reading books on people like Dennis Rader (the btk killer) and John Wayne Gacy but now these days I like keeping up with more current missing persons or murders like the Delphi case

Anybody else interested in true crime or have any good recommendations?

Official: Craig Farquhar signed (U21s)

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Craig Farquhar from Larne FC.

The 20-year-old centre-back will be a part of Darren Powell’s Under-21s, after making the move from NIFL Premiership side Larne FC.

Farquhar came through the ranks at his hometown club Ballymena United and was captain of their Under-20s side before progressing to the first-team.

He signed his first professional contract with the Sky Blues at the age of 18 and moved on loan to second-tier side Dundela FC, where he made 12 appearances and scored two goals in 2021/22.

In 2022/23, Farquhar made 14 appearances for Ballymena United and scored twice, including a header in the Irish Cup semi-final against Larne to send his side through to the final.

The defender then joined Larne in the summer of 2023 and went on to make 27 appearances in all competitions this season, including the Champions League qualifiers, before making the move to south London.*

Upon putting pen to paper on his new deal, Farquhar said: “I’m delighted to be here, it’s such a big club. I’m glad to get everything over the line and I can't wait to get started.”

Academy Director Gary Issott also added: “Craig is a player that the club’s watched over a long period of time.

“He’s a young centre-half that’s experienced both first-team and European football early in his career and he has all the attributes to play at the highest levels in the game.

“Craig joins our Under-21s and will add competition in the defensive part of the pitch.”*

Car Finance Scandal

I've just clocked this, and it's really rather interesting. And if any of you bought a car on the HP in the last few years, then it might be worth a few squid. To view the link you have to Register or Login

Millions of drivers could be in line for a payout, it has been claimed, after the UK financial watchdog opened an investigation into whether consumers had been unfairly charged inflated prices for loans on new and secondhand cars.

The Financial Conduct Authority said on Thursday that it had decided to examine whether a compensation scheme was needed to deal with alleged large-scale mis-selling in the £50bn-a-year motor finance sector.

Martin Lewis, a consumer champion, said the move could lead to “the new PPI” – a reference to the multibillion-pound payment protection insurance scandal.

Who do we miss the most??

Was thinking about the players we are missing at the moment and was keen to know who people think is the player we miss the most out of the obvious options.

Hopefully this poll is a bit easier to understand, for some of course :D

If one of those players could be back for the next game who would make the biggest improvement to the team?

Next US president

Nikki Haley?

Team v blades

dimanche 21 janvier 2024

Johnstone

Clyne Andersen Guehi Mitchell

Richards Hughes Lerma

Eze Mateta Olise

5 at the back

Can anyone explain why a manager in his very long career has decided now to employ a back 5 all of a sudden. We're probably the most ill equipped club to do that with.

Player ratings - Arsenal away

I can at least attempt to kick this off.

Would be good to discuss player performances away from rants elsewhere.

Eze was MOM for me aside from when he carelessly lost the ball for the fourth.

Henderson wasn’t great for both corner goals which was a surprise as thought he would be stronger than Johnstone.

Hughes started well but faded. Schlupp was ok at times.

Mateta worked hard and linked play at times with little support or service.

Ahamada played in an unfamiliar role but showed one strong run. Franca showed a flash of quality.

Roy Hodgson - Time to go (Arsenal edition)

Yes or No

Embarrassed today!

As much as it was a very poor performance I’m embarrassed by those stupid banners which came out at 90 mins!

Just to throw it out there the HF’s do not speak on behalf on the rest of the fan base and I would love to know who outside of the HF we’re aware this was going to take place?

It’s embarrassing. Not only to see the banners themselves but the fact they came out almost in injury time, when we was 3-0 down. No wonder the players gave up and it soon became 5. Has nothing but a negative affect on the team, managers and club as a whole.

Like anyone as the club are going to think “oh the HF have spoken we must act now” football or any business for that matter.

I can’t help but wonder would those banners have come out had we won or got a draw? Very much doubt it!

There’s so much I want to say but know it will fall on deaf ears.

Fans demo at the end of Arsenal 5-0 game

Roy looking on, looking very pensive. No discernable reaction from SP.

Not a good day. Where do we go from here?

Granted we still have the transfer window, we Desperatly need to get some attacking talent in.

Could see this being the end, or the start of the end for Roy.

Have any of you that are getting a bit thin on top used anything that reverses the loss or thickens your hair, other than the Wayne Rooney or Glen Murray treatments? I’ve seen loads of ads out there for stuff that claims to do the job, but am very skeptical about their claimed results.

Interesting but daft questions

That time of night when the beer started to take effect was reached , and it prompted a strange but intriguing question from one the crowd I was out with on Sunday . If it never rained again , and the world's population had to drink de- salinated water ..How long would it take for the oceans to dry up ??
Stupid I know . But I have been thinking about it since and I thought I'd pass this poser on to you lot to ponder on and come up with an answer

Favourite unfashionable Palace player

Please help me - it's miserable January, the weather is rubbish and like many I am fairly unenthused by modern football.
Thought I would warm the cockles with some nostalgia and start a thread of unfashionable Palace players over the years - you know the type - loved by some, hated by others, never the star but typically Palace.
May I start with Phil Barber.
Started going full time to Palace in the mid 80s and loved him from the start. A workaday striker who turned into a safe left mid with a great left foot delivery (and a decent right foot too). Always chipped in with goals and had a fantastic celebration (run to the fans and big leap) when he did score.
Never got better than when he was with us.
Great unfashionable under-rated player.

George Graham Testimonial

Hi,

On 5th May 1980 I went to Selhurst Park to see Crystal Palace v Chelsea in a George Graham Testimonial match...unsurprisingly after all these years I can't remember the final score can anyone help me?

While I at it on 15th April 1980 Palace played Tottenham in a Martin Hinshelwood Testimonial a final score for this match would also be great!!!:)

PC not seeing the GPU.

A bit stuck here.

The power supply in my machine died and I have just replaced with a similar rated supply. I took the oppourtunity to give the machine a good clean inside and reseat the CPU. All run of the mill maintence.

Fired it up and all working fine apart from the GPU so I am currently running off the motherboard video processor.

The GTX1070ti is not being seen. The motherboard is an ASUS Z370-A.

Checked in the Dev manager and BIOS.

Checked power connection, all good.

Seated properly in the PCI slot, tried it in the alternative, same result.

Lights on the GPU and the fans are spinning.

Tried to DL latest drivers but they won't install because it can't see any NVidia hardware.

Any other suggestions?

The rules as we apply them to games that may be decided on penalties is that the result is the score before penalties. That leaves the option of a draw in play. Therefore score, scorers and attendance please.

I recommend that you also say if it will be in normal or extra time if there is a winner, or which team wins the penalty shootout.

The club has been informed today that sadly Len Choules, our defender from the 1950s and early 60s sadly passed away three days ago just a couple of weeks from his 92nd birthday.

Len joined from Sutton united in May 1951, made his first team debut in April 1953 and went on to amass 280 first team appearances and scoring three goals.

My thoughts are with his family and friends, an obituary from the club will follow.

Just to prove I'm a technical dunce...

I recently got a new internet set-up/hub which is over the air (5G) rather than over the hard wire phone lines.

My download speed went from 18mbps to 100+mbps which is very nice. But I'm noticing the signal strength may not be as strong as my old set-up, especially in the bedroom.

I'm looking at maybe getting a cheap Extender from Amazon to put in the bedroom to see if it will boost the signal strength.

A couple of questions after reading the blurb on the extender:

1. It appears the extender will have its own WiFi address and each iPhone, iPad, Kindle etc will have to log into that address. Is that how it works?

2. The set-up instructions talk about connecting to the modem/hub using WPS. I didn't have a clue what WPS so looked it up. Apparently it is "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" and is a way of connecting devices to the modem/hub. I see the hub does have a button on it marked WPS. Again is this good or bad? reading conflicting statements about home network security maybe compromised (not that I have anything to hide really).

3. Is the extender really the cheapest/best way to go here? The signal strength I'm getting is average (2 of the 3 bars), so not needing a lot of extra strength... Also we live in a very small house (single level), so not a huge area to cover.

Seems worth trying, if not frustrating that the new system needs additional equipment to bring it up to snuff. And I guess I've learnt that speed is not everything.

Thanks for any advice.

Random games you’ve been to

Addowoltz posted on another thread about a random reserve game that ended 11-0 he went to.
Just got me thinking about random games I’ve been to over the years, you know those games where you’re desperate for a game, any game, reserves, youths, non-league, on holiday abroad maybe, then you end up thinking wtf am I doing here??

Just two of mine of the top of my head, back in the 80’s I’d been laid up with my leg in plaster for weeks so my mate said let’s find a game to go to, we ended up driving from Bromley to Swindon v Wolves in the old 3rd or 4th division!! Can’t believe we did it looking back now.

Also while on holiday in Weymouth I went to Weymouth v Exeter pre season friendly.

Annoying coworkers

mercredi 10 janvier 2024

Does anyone on here have to deal with annoying coworkers or is it just me that seems to struggle.I am thinking it is me that cannot cope with them or is it just weak management higher up the food chain that puts me with them.
Any advice would very welcome.

Since taking voluntary management about three years back during covid,I have had a number of jobs with a couple not what i expected but i have left a couple because of the people working there. My current job has put me in a position with a female work colleague without sounding like Joey Barton should not be in her role and leads me to tearing my hair out with her work ethic and downright stupidity.People say dont work with her but unfortunately that is not possible.
My new boss is like a wet blanket and because of this i have expressed my reasoning to the boss but her answer is " Jill is Jill unfortunately " and does nothing to alleviate the problem.

Do I walk from the job or go to HR with my views? Have been maybe offered
an old job where again a couple of people there were aggravating so I am thinking it is me after all and maybe thinking best not to go back .All becoming a vicious circle.

More legal help needed :-(

dimanche 7 janvier 2024

Just pointing in the right direction would be good.

My daughter in laws parents split up and her dad married a new woman.
18iah years later it fell apart and divorce proceedings initiated. Unfortunately he was being a bit of a knob about it. He paid all the mortgage she didn’t work but put up a chunk of the collateral for the house. He claimed she didn’t deserve half the assets as she didn’t work. It all got very drawn out and acrimonious. He should have accepted and walked away unfortunately this led to big legal fees and debts and a grant decline in mental health. So bad he committed suicide. Now comes the help part.
He had, at 50%, about £275,000 in the house, a pension worth 80k a year and an insurance policy of £250,000 that will pay out.
The fool never changed his will and now the wife that he hated and was divorcing with all the associated paper work, is claiming the lot and refusing to give the daughter ANYTHING ! Claiming her solicitors are telling her she has every right to it all as the will wasn’t changed and she was down as the sole beneficiary. Daughter in law has had to deal with the death of her father and now this and is distraught.

So anything that can guide would be helpful. Really unsure where to turn, because as far as we can see. She has the legal right to do this. If his mind had been sound he would have changed his will but he was so messed up it killed him.

First game in the academy in 2024 kicks off this morning!

Glad to have something (hopefully) a bit more exciting to watch.

Hoping we can get some returning injured players back after the break!

Funerals

As you reach a certain age, sadly you get to go to funerals on a regular basis.

It’s difficult to describe them as good somehow but today’s went well and was different. The funeral was of a long term friends mother who we have known for around 30 years or so. Lovely lady and always the wisest one in the room and always had a twinkle in her eye, ready for a laugh.

The first difference was that the message was to come dressed as you feel comfortable, with no need/expectation of wearing black. I.e. it was to be a relaxed celebration rather anything formal. Many of the older ones still arrived in black by their choice but it was the first one I had attended in smart casual rather than a black suit. I would certainly vote for this and expect it to spread.

The whole service was supported by PowerPoint I know is widespread these days but it was the first funeral usage of it for us. Thankfully it had the words to the hymns displayed too because 2 were ‘modern’ that we had never heard of.

Wicker coffin for this dear lady by her own request. Knowing he I suspect she thought that she was saving cash for the family by having one but apparently they are more costly than wooden ones. Again a first for us. It looked beautiful and was a good choice.

The final first for us was that the service was followed by a cremation elsewhere but this last trip was made alone, or rather with the undertakers only. Maybe this is normal, I don’t know, but it’s the first time for ones we have attended. Just felt odd somehow.

Everything went well as could be expected and those speaking on the day did well and painted some good images of her life. Tough job for family I always think.

Arsenal's "No More Red" Campaign

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Declan Rice says Arsenal's No More Red campaign, which aims to combat youth knife crime in London, can have a "massive" impact on young people.

Arsenal will wear a white kit for Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool to highlight the initiative.

Given knife crime is prevelant all over London; with one young girl being stabbed to death in South London on Christmas Eve, do you think Palace ahould do something similar? Launch a special edition Blue and White striped kit or something?

I know it's more effective for Arsenal, as their kit is predominantly Red, but I do feel Palace should look to support the anti knife crime cause.

Online Sexual Assaults.

The papers are full of it this week because of the age of the alleged 'victim' (under 16). Not hard to find, but here is the To view the link you have to Register or Login.

(The papers were not that interested this time last year when a To view the link you have to Register or Login of a similar 'attack' was published in the Daily Mail).

I'm still struggling with the various issues that surround the matter. I can see it might have been a very unpleasant experience for the young girl, but is it really a matter for the police to investigate? And if they do, what is the crime? And if there is no crime, how can there be a victim? (This To view the link you have to Register or Login explores the issues well).

I have no doubt that this will be the new reality. But maybe it's a case of 'know what to expect' rather than newspaper front pages?

Discussion: If we had to sell to generate cash.

mardi 2 janvier 2024

I for one hope we spend wisely this January,we do not have massive revenue streams other than the sky tv money so need to be careful as we have not been selling our best players like Brighton.I think we need to cash in on a couple of players to give us some spending power to re invest. If we had to sell I would let Anderson go for 40m plus if we could get that.Who would you shift out?

My understanding is that the third and fourth rounds go to replays in the event of a draw at 90 minutes.

Brighton away

Any news on when these might go on sale and the likely points required?

Is this definitely 3pm Saturday 3rd February?

I haven’t made one of these threads since the Jonny Parr one. I thought we could use it to come together a bit with all the Roy in/ out sides at the moment.

Feel free to add your own

Who was the better Duo?

Seeing Olise’s form since he’s come back in the team and what will hopefully lead to Eze getting back to his best made me wonder if that’s the best duo we’ve had at our club?

Wright & Bright?
Zaha & Bolaise?
Eze & Olise?

I think currently I’d say Wilf & Bolaise just shade it given the trickery and how much fun it was to watch them tear up the wings.

Wright & Bright were unreal of course but didn’t seem like it lasted long enough before it was broken up!

Eze & Olise are on the road to being the best attacking due we’ve ever had, long may it continue!

Dave McClelland Croydon Advertiser rip

I am sure many of the older members on here will remember my father, Dave McClelland, who on his retirement around 1999, was the Sports Editor at The Advertiser. Dad passed away peacefully at home on Saturday (30th Dec).
I was very lucky to grow up with dad as a sports journalist. Even as a young kid he would take me to all the Palace games and after the matches I would stand in some corridor, corner of a press office, or my favourite, by the changing room door as he did his interviews with the players and managers.
Back before the internet and social media, and because Palace were not 'A Big Club' reported in the 'Big' newspapers, The Advertiser was the only place to get all the reports, news and gossip (working alongside John Matthews, John Hulls and others, and latterly with David Groves).
He had lots of stories which I hoped he would record in a memoir, but it did not happen. He got into 'trouble' once with the club, as they disapproved his headline to the report of a game in which Ian Evans scored a hat-trick, "Good 'Evans, A Palace Hattrick!"
He was asked in an interview once the best/most memorable 4 games he saw with Palace; The Fulham promotion game in 69, the Away games at Leeds and Sunderland in the 76 Cup run, and the promotion clincher away at Wrexham in 77. And the thing these all have one thing in common is, he didn't take me to any of them!
One game he did take me to, which showed his 'understanding side' was on the 22nd Oct 1977. On the 18th Oct I had to make an 'appearance' at Bromley Juvenile court and received a 1 year Conditional Discharge sentance. I was 15 and by then had progressed to watching Palace from the terraces. But, 4 days later Palace were away at Brighton! He wouldn't let me go on the train down, or stand in the Away section, I was back in the Press Box where he could keep an eye on me!
Dad covered all local sports, including Croydon FC, ( and the very near FACup giant killing of Millwall in 1979, draw at Selhurst, lost AET at the Den), Boxing (Clinton and Leon McKenzie) and so much more
I could keep typing and really do have lots of interesting Palace stories.
He enjoyed a great rapport with the supporters, as he was also one of them.
Dad had not been well for some years and was unable to leave the house. But, he followed all the scores and listened to the reports and news I had to share. The 3-1 win on Sat was a lovely finale.

Dad won an award for the Advertiser Supplement he produced when Palace got to Cup Final in 1990, i think this photo is from that eve
