How do I go about getting one for next season? Thank you

Programmes Going For Free

My Dad recently passed away, and there is a fair collection of Palace programmes / fanzines ranging from the 90s to 2019 that would be free to any takers willing to collect from East Grinstead. Let me know if you are interested as it would be a shame to throw them away.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 3* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 7 or more, then a 4th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Surely this can’t be true. I can’t imagine Parish working with Mike Ashley.

Speculation: Who wants Conor back?

It's a no from me. Would rather we spent our limited funds on a 9 and a RB.

EDIT: Let's assume £35-40m would be his cost.

The Athletic have an article that Max Aarons is looking to leave Norwich. He has one year left on his deal and apparently the Norwich DOF is saying he needs to move on also. I assume Naaarch are about to run out of parachute payments..

Labour to compulsory purchase land for house building without "hope value".

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I hope that this happens. I also hope that much of what is built on this land remains in the ownership of the local authority as social housing with truly affordable rents.

I would add a caveat, that in the process of this reform, the local community are involved in both the decision as to where this land is sourced and what the end result will look like in their environment.

Another hope is that cockneyrebel, sees this as a good Labour socialist policy. Its radical and necessary in my view, especially in rural areas where landowners can grossly add to their pension pots at the expense of the environment and the rest of the local community.

Con dos cojones

lundi 29 mai 2023

Yesterday our governing party suffered some very bad local election results, losing most of the autonomous regions and most of Spain’s main cities. A lot of possible reasons have been suggested, mostly anger with the coalition partners or the support from regional nationalist parties. Personally I’ve mostly been impressed with their economic steering, but it is the shade of govt I favour, though the PM is not personally my cup of tea.
What nobody expected was that he’d bring the general elections forward from November to the earliest possible date, 23rd of July. I just wanted to celebrate this audacious move, and tip my titfer to the slightly irritating Pedro Sanchez. He does make politics more lively, I must say, it beats cowering in govt but barely in power till the last moment possible.

4) Blackburn home 1989

Red and Blue bar

Used to be in block E and got moved so went to upper Holmesdale as better leg room for my dad.

Never been to the Red and Blue bar in the two years I’ve been in the upper stand and went there yesterday before the game. Was surprised how nice it is.

Is it open to the whole Holmesdale or just the upper bit?

Petrol Pump Prices Parade - Please Post Pointers

It seems to be so important to a lot of BBSers that they confuse it with personally suffering a cost of living CRISIS.

I thought I would do you all the service of providing a thread to post where the bargains can be had and which places are ripping you off for a few pence. Then you can all choose to drive that extra distance to top up your tanks.

No need to thank me. All part of the service.

Some Migration sense spoken

Dr Peter Drechsler, chair of the ICC UK, has also been speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme ahead of the new figures being released.

He says “it’s worth remembering that every single person living in Britain today is the descendant of an immigrant”.

Drechsler adds it’s very important we change the narrative about migration so we are speaking about immigrants with “respect and appreciation”.

He continues by saying there “is no vision” or “strategy” from the government about what sort of “talent” the UK needs for its future workforce.

Humanitarian and students is the majority of this latest increase. Both of these are temporary. And if some stay because they love it, brilliant it adds to the tax pot and success of the country. I can’t even be bothered to look at the hysteria from the mail or express about these figures.

Assisted Living / Retirement home homes experiences

Looking for BBS experiences

My mother in law is looking to move much closer to us (currently 200 miles away). She’s 83, has been on her own for about 9 months now and has started to lose mobility, and going up to the north west most weekends is getting to be a bit much for us. She’s not in a position where she needs to be in a care home but it is clear she needs more support than a normal flat and a community she can be a part of. So we’re looking at assisted living type places, the McCarthy Stone / Churchill things. There are two brand new ones within 15 minutes of us, and one about 8 years old.

I appreciate the costs for new ones are well over an equivalent flat and the service charges are very high, but does anyone have any practical experiences of them, what they’re actually like to live in beyond the glossy pictures that McCarthy Stone and Churchill show.

Also given the mobility loss that has already started clearly this not likely to be a long term thing, so we’re debating between leasing one and buying one, so views on reselling when the time comes. I get there is likely to be a loss on sale (how could there not be, if basically the market is restricted to anyone over 70 years old etc), but how much etc (yes I will be checking out the land registry etc for this) but also any experiences of time to sell as well.

Also alternative ideas would be appreciated if anyone has any.

Jimmy Mac leaving after nine seasons

A great service to the club. Good luck for the future.

Neil Sullivan (one game loan 1992)

mardi 23 mai 2023

Slightly odd one, but Neil Sullivan played the last game of 1991/92, Away at QPR for us as all four of our Goalkeepers were injured. Has there ever been any pictures of him playing for us? In all the years since I don't think I have ever seen one, but would be intrigued if any exist.

Algy Ward Passes away

Didn't see another thread on this but just learned that Tank bassist and vocalist Algy Ward passed away on May 17th. He was a massive Palace fan and even mentioned Selhurst Park in one of his songs. He also played with The Damned.

Loved the stuff he did with Tank and their 80s albums are NWOBHM classics.

Estate Agent mixed up move-in date for rental property

Hi All,

Just wondering if any housing experts might be able to help out on this one as I've had some great advice on here in the past when it comes to housing and property.

We have recently secured a lease on a new rental property, paid the holding deposit and completed referencing. It was advertised as being available from the 19th June and all communication to/from the estate agent has been based on that move-in date.

However the estate agent has called us and said he has mixed up the available from date and said the date it was available from was meant to be the 28th June as the existing family living in the property had agreed a weeks extension to their lease.

We had already had our notice served by our landlord as she is selling the property and the original section 21 notice ended the tenancy on the 28th June but we went back and told the agency that we had found somewhere else so could vacate on the 19th June which was accepted as a counter as I guess it allowed the landlord to bring her exchange date forward. Obviously we should have waited until we'd signed the new lease agreement before asking to finish the current rental early but we didn't expect things to turn out like this.

Is there anything we can do? The landlord and estate agent on the property we are currently renting are adamant that we have to be out on the 19th and will be putting her sale into jeopardy if we try to revert back and stay to the date in the original Section 21 notice.

We don't have very much money and the thought of having to effectively double our moving costs by doing it twice in the space of 10 days paying to store everything somewhere for that time along with living in a hotel or airbnb for a week doesn't really appeal especially with a 3 month old baby.

Thank you in advance.

So who do you want down..?

Pick 2 from the 3 ?

Suggestion: Karmaldeen Sulemana

I think he needs his own thread. The guy is just a ridiculous talent. So much speed. Young. Can play anywhere across the front 3, although mainly on the left. I've watched him quite closely since he signed for Southampton. Even if Wilf signs we are going to need strong back up as he may miss games due to injury. I like Sarr, I like CHO, but this would now be my top choice winger for us to bring in. We have Ayew, Schlupp and Guehi who all have links to Ghana. Could we attract him to Palace now that the Saints have been relegated?

Edit: I also meant to say that if we are sticking with Hodgson then pace on the counter attack is even more important when deciding who to target. This guy has it in buckets.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Nottingham Forest (h) 28/5/23

samedi 20 mai 2023

Last game of the season!

Johnstone
Ward - Andersen - Guehi - Mitchell
Doucoure
Eze - Ahamada
Olise - Edouard - Ayew

Guaita, Clyne, Richards, Adaramola, Milivojevic, Hughes, McArthur, Schlupp, Mateta

Obviously no idea who’s going to be available, but with 5 subs, it’d be good to see Clyne, Luka and McArthur get on the pitch if it’s the last time they’ll be playing for us, and give them a send off. Then let’s get Tayo some minutes, he’ll be raring to go after smashing Yong PSV. :D

Ahamada the wildcard in the starting line up, let’s get him playing.

Parking ticket advice

My son got a ticket at a local sports center that was a Pay & Display where he was part of the away team playing football. A ticket was sent to my adress and he responded with a chequer for the parking ticket explaining that he was led to belive there wasnt any charge but if there was he was happy to pay. It also reffered to his new address. He tried to contact via phone to dicuss but no number. They then sent him and even larger ticket to his new address, proving receipt of the original letter. Again he tried to contact and said it was obvoios that they wer not accpeting his cheque and offereing to pay the original ticket. but no number. Now they have put it in the hands of a debt collection company. He, and I, are pretty pissed as its impossible to talk or contact anyone. Ibe told him to go to citizens advice but wondered if the BBS had any experince? Its a private ticket btw not a council or police one.

He is an aprentice in Bristol and earns 50p and a T shirt currently.

Any conveyancing solicitors out there? Land Registry query!

Hi

Don't know if anyone is able to help me.

Property that I currently own (along with 5 kids) currently has a Land registry (from 1998) in the name of my late wife and her ex-husband.
They divorced, late wife took on mortgage on her own following divorce.
I subsequently got together with her and went on mortgage.
Late wife died 4 years ago. Terms of will is that house is left half to me, with remaining half to the 6 kids split between them. No probate involved.
Stepdaughter been renting since.
I now want to sell house next year so kids can have some money.
Can I just go ahead and sell house to new owners, without changing Land Registry (into mine and kids names) or do I need to change it first?
Will it hold the sale up?
Is it best to go to a solicitor!

Turkish Election

dimanche 14 mai 2023

Quite surprised not to see a thread on this - quite a monumental moment when it comes to Eastern Med politics and one which has major ramifications across the region.

Erdogan seemingly (and rightly) losing ground to Kilicdaroglu's coalition. Likely to go to a second round at the end of May, but it's the first time in years where that stranglehold has been threatened.

Anadolu doing what Anadolu does, lots of rhetoric but this one matters.

Greatest Palace goals

Well
What can I say but I thought the second goal was up there with the very best I have seen at Selhurst
When broken down it comprises a fabulous pass from Michael, a sublime first touch, a very elegant dribble and a great top corner shot
Compares very favourably with the following
Several Ambrose strikes
Southgate against pompey
John ‘yogi’ Hughes against the blades
Don Rogers against Manure
What do others think

Phillip Schofield

Is there something in the press coming out soon? He seems to be getting a lot of negative attention.

Travel Information: No Trains for Bournemouth Match?

I just saw this from the club...

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I'm staying in London near Piccadilly. I was going to take the train from Victoria to Selhurst for the match this Saturday.

So if I read that correctly, there are no trains to/from Selhurst, Norwood Junction, or Thornton Heath on matchday. So what's the best way to get there and back? I don't mind a long walk. Is there any service on Saturday to stations farther away, or am I looking at a cab ride? I don't even know how to get a cab after the match, other than hiking to a hotel in Croydon and asking there.

GP crisis

So our GP’s are now overwhelmed. Firstly the don’t understand why. We have slightly more people but it’s now like getting an appointment with god. I recently waited 5 weeks for one. So the answer from some genius in Whitehall is to hand some of the work down to the Pharmacists.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Who comes up with these ideas? We already have a problem with Anti-biotics over use and declining results. Add we have had a large decline in the number of Pharmacies and you wonder what reality they live in

How would you feel if we appointed Graham Potter in the summer?

Obviously he's ex Brighton so I'm sure some of our fans would be against it straight away but he also did a pretty good job there in the end and got them playing possesion based football.

I think it's definitely a possibility that Parish will be looking at him as a potential appointment in the summer.

Just interested to see what our fans think?

Asking Chat GPT about Palace and getting bizarre replies

dimanche 7 mai 2023

I wasn't sure where to post this, because it is about Palace so probably should be promoted to the "On Topic" section, but as it's about computers and AI technology I thought I'd stick it in here.

I find AI fascinating, but what I really find most fascinating is when it gives you incorrect facts, a term the IT people call "hallucination" (an attempt to cover up the truth: that their data engines are not as good as they like to think they are and they rushed it through far too quickly).

So, my question (and it was a genuine question) on Chat GPT was:

Quote:

Who is the most hated former Crystal Palace player by Crystal Palace fans?
This was the first reply:

Quote:

As an AI language model, I do not have personal opinions or emotions, but I can provide information based on available data. That being said, I cannot definitively determine who the most hated former Crystal Palace player is among Crystal Palace fans, as opinions and emotions can vary widely among individuals. However, there have been some players who have faced criticism or negative reactions from Palace fans in the past, such as Neil Shipperley, who scored a controversial goal for Sheffield United against Palace in the 2003 First Division playoff final, or Mile Jedinak, who left the club under acrimonious circumstances in 2016. Ultimately, the level of hatred or dislike towards a former player would be subjective and dependent on individual fan perspectives.
So, I replied:

Quote:

Your data is wrong and needs to be corrected. For a start, Neil Shipperley was playing for Wimbledon at that time, and only joined Crystal Palace in 2003. Sheffield United was indeed in the 2003 First Division playoff final, but they lost 0-3 against Wolverhampton Wanderers so no one from Sheffield United scored any goals in that game and Crystal Palace were not in the final anyway. In fact, in the 2004 playoff final, it was Neil Shipperley who scored the goal that got us into the Premier League against West Ham! However, the one thing you are correct about is that Neil Shipperley has gone down in many fans' estimation after he was convicted in 2019 for flashing and public masturbation. However, I'm not sure if he would be the most hated former Crystal Palace player as far as the fans are concerned.
Talk about having to do someone else's job for them(!). Anyhow, the reponse was pretty standard:

Quote:

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I apologize for the error in my initial response. As an AI language model, I strive to provide accurate and up-to-date information, and I appreciate your input in helping me improve my knowledge and responses. It's important to note that opinions and emotions towards former players can vary widely among individuals, and it can be difficult to determine who is the most hated or disliked by all fans. Nonetheless, I hope my revised response is more accurate and informative.
I wasn't exactly satisfied with that. I felt that it was particularly nasty to single out Jedi so I wanted to try and found out why it came to that quite horrible conclusion. I thought, perhaps there's a Brighton fan working for OpenAI who has been feeding it misinformation just to piss us off. So I said:

Quote:

I also don't understand why your data singled our Mile Jedinak, who didn't really leave in acrimonious circumstances, and who many Palace fans still consider a club legend. Can you tell me why you gave me these answers?
To be fair, Chat GPT then admitted it was wrong, that there were no acrimonious circumstances and that we actually respect him:

Quote:

I apologize for any confusion my previous response may have caused. As an AI language model, I do not have personal opinions or biases, and my responses are based on data and information available to me. In regards to the example I provided about Mile Jedinak, I was mistaken in suggesting that he left Crystal Palace in acrimonious circumstances. In fact, Jedinak played a key role in helping Crystal Palace win promotion to the Premier League in the 2012-13 season, and he remained a popular and respected figure among Palace fans during his time at the club. He eventually left Crystal Palace in 2016 to join Aston Villa, and while his departure may have been disappointing for some Palace fans, I am not aware of any widespread acrimony or ill-feeling towards him among supporters.

In regards to the example I provided about Neil Shipperley, I apologize for the inaccuracies in my initial response. It appears that my data was incorrect, and I appreciate you bringing this to my attention and providing more accurate information. As you mentioned, Shipperley did score a key goal for Crystal Palace in the 2004 playoff final against West Ham, which helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League. However, his later conviction for indecent exposure and public masturbation may have led to some fans distancing themselves from him.

I hope this clarification helps, and please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Interestingly, the chatbot then brought back the Shipperley story which I wasn't expecting because I thought that was all done and dusted, but I still don't think he's our most hated former player, even though what he did was despicable. So I penned back a swift response:

Quote:

That's fine. If you ever get asked this question again, rather than plucking some name out of thin air and with no justification, not very many Crystal Palace fans liked Neil Ruddock during his short time with us. He always seemed to put himself before the team, and he struggled with issues regarding his fitness. There's loads more. But please, don't say Mile Jedinak again, we loved him at Palace.
I have no idea whether this data will indeed be learnt, and maybe it would be a good idea for someone else, in a few weeks, from a different Chat GPT account, to ask the same question. Either way, it is pretty scary that it can be so definite about something so wrong. To think that the Government are probably using AI in all sorts of things, such as possibly deciding whether someone should get refugee status or sickness benefit, is very scary.

Thought I'd put this up here, in case anyone else has similar stories with AI getting it completely wrong.

Alternative Premier League

Based purely on affinity and loathing

1 Crystal Palace: OF COURSE
2 Fulham: Always liked the ground and the away day. Feel Fulham fans have the same cross to bare as us
3 Brentford: What was a small club that has grown and built things the right way. Again all Brentford fans I've met have the same level of expectation
4 Bournemouth: Notice a theme here?
5 Forrest: Hope they survive. Real European and football trail blazers back in the day that gave me a soft spot for them.
6. Villa: FA cup semi v the scousers was at their ground and just for that they get a pass.
7 Leicester: Kicked the big boys in the teeth by winning the league
8 Southampton: Always admired their players and their yout ( Ratboy exception)
9 Spurs: Nothing really for or agaisnt these guys so mid table mediocrity
10 Wolves: As a child I loved them for their name and Orange ( not his yellow crap they are now wearing ) was my favourite colour
11 Man City: Even if my car got smashed up when I mistakenly parked in Moss side and even though they are getting a bit boring always winning, the fans never had a sence on entitlement, thyey remeber the bad years AND the hate Utd.
12 Chelsea. Up a lot with the appoittnment of Lampard. Pathetic "come on you Chels" support suffereing from the withdrawal of the Ogliarchs money.
13 Newcastle: This lot I think will drop like a stone in my league as they invest their green wash money
14 West Ham: Would have been a lot higher, if it wasn't for the unfair stadium deal
15 Leeds: Thugs
16 Everton: Last seasons escape, blatant FFP breaking and fan behaviors. Hope they go down to learn a hard lesson.
17 Arsenal: Would have been a lot higher if it wasnt for Arsenal TV showing what pricks their supporters are
18 Liverpool. Scouse bin dipping, allways someone elses fault, best team in the world twats.
19 Man Utd: *****na, Paul Nixon, Surrey based "supporters" entilted WANKERS
20 Brighton: Was never going to be anything different

A.I cover songs

mercredi 3 mai 2023

For those that haven’t heard any, it’s using artificial intelligence software to get one artist covering another song. By feeding an artist's entire back catalogue to the A.I software, including recorded or live vocals and speech patterns, it allows it to mimic their singing. You then can make them cover any song you want.

Clearly in its infancy, so results are varied, but some are quite shockingly authentic. Can only imagine how good the technology will be as time goes on.

It’s quite mind blowing and not sure what this means for the music industry? Already, certain artists are up in arms about it and has opened up a Pandora’s box of legal and morality issues.

Don't forget that scorers and crowd numbers must be posted an hour before KO though you can predict the result/score right up until KO.

Free public transport

Obviously I know it won't happen under either the Tories or new new Labour.

But Luxemburg and Malta do it, so even under the current system it is feasible.

Also quite a lot of cities across Europe now do it.

Crisps

Went in to tescos today, normal size packet of walkers cheese and onion £1 when did that bloody happen ?

Being a guest in opponents box at away game!

My cousins are big Spurs fans and have got me and my dad tickets in a box at the new WHL this Saturday. I’m a season ticket holder in our main stand but rarely go to away games due to the fact that I go with my 82 year old dad and he can’t stand up for 2 x 45 minutes. I also have a shit load of other things going on in my life that I like to do on alternate Saturdays throughout the footie season.
The question is…apart from the obvious of not wearing Palace colours how the hell do I act when Wilf gets his hat trick in the 38th minute?

New Kit for 23/24 Season

It's that time of the year again where we'll speculate about whether the kit(s) will be released at the end of year awards, whether they'll be red and blue or blue and red and people complaining about the prices.

On the basis we should be with both Macron and Cinch again next season I think we will see at least one before the end of the season. Maybe new home kit against Forest?

Would like a non-black sash kit next season and maybe a little more yellow.

Any good pubs for lunch within walking distance of Selhurst Park

lundi 1 mai 2023

When I travel to Palace, I take the train from Victoria to either Selhurst or Norwood Junction. Are there any good pubs within a 20ish minute walk to Selhurst Park on match day? I'm specifically looking for a place where I can sit down at a table, have a pint or two, and fish and chips or a burger, normal pub food. I typically go to Shelverdine Goathouse, as it ticks all those boxes. Just curious if there are other options. When I look on google, everything else looks like drinks only with no sit down food, or cheap takeaway fast food places without seating.

I don't mind walking briskly, so it doesn't have to be that close to the ground; it could be farther away.
