Lady Hussey Quits.

I think this is just about how some old people can't keep up with the times, rather than the royals. Fifty years ago To view the link you have to Register or Login might have been polite conversation, bless the ageing aristo.

But nowadays it is plain blinkered and rude.

Lady SH: Where are you from?

Me: Sistah Space.

SH: No, where do you come from?

Me: We're based in Hackney.

SH: No, what part of Africa are you from?

Me: I don't know, they didn't leave any records.

SH: Well, you must know where you're from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?

Me: Here, the UK.

SH: No, but what nationality are you?

Me: I am born here and am British.

SH: No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?

Me: 'My people', lady, what is this?

SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from. When did you first come here?

Me: Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50s when...

SH: Oh, I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean!

Me: No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.

SH: Oh so you're from...

Steve Mandanda - France v Tunisia

It was interesting to see Steve Mandanda (age 37) being taken out of the cupboard by France in the World Cup today.

A blast from our past anyway - 9 league games for Palace 2016-17, injuries making his time with us difficult.

PalaceTV

Great week for us Palace TV geeks. Live games on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday next week :lux:

Discussion: Mohammed Kudus

I see he just scored at the WC with an assist from Jordan.

Probably beyond us but ticks a lot of boxes. Hence I made this a discussion rather than a suggestion.

Interesting article about him a few days back.

Irene Cara RIP

To view the link you have to Register or Login She won a Grammy and an Oscar for co-writing and singing "Flashdance - What a Feeling" but I will always remember her for starring in (and singing the theme song for) Fame, the excellent original movie not the increasingly bland tv show/reboot etc. As a 15 year old when it came out, I found it impossible to not have a crush on her.

Controversial opinion: I prefer the winter world cup

I hated the idea, pausing the season for some international matches I didnt give a shit about, meaning I would be with out Palace for a month or so but now it has started Im wondering if I prefer it. Knowing I will get both barrels from alot of people on here I wanted to put my case forward.

Watching football TV is far better in the winter, when you have nothing better to do outside, which you would do on a summers day.

Football BBQs are overrated, you cant see the screen anyway.

If the world cup was in the winter it would mean all the very hot in summer nations in the world could host it.

Hi folks,

I need to install an app that is only compatible with chrome however my existing system (browser, emails, docs and files etc) is still the old pre-chrome google which I'm quite happy with.

If I go ahead with the app will that sync everything across to chrome?

Sorry, I'm not that tekkie so hopefully this makes sense?

Thanks :p

Best way to watch World Cup outside UK

Hi all, anyone watching BBC or other UK broadcaster from abroad? Please consider me to be a tech infant and offer any advice! I am sufficiently capable of using a VPN if anyone knows and uses one that is working. IPTV or whatever it is seems rather confusing but is that a good option?

Thank you in advance!

Gary Cahill retires

As I can't find a thread I will start.

A player I didn't realise was so good till he played for us and formed part of a tremendous defensive barrier. Will be remembered as a defender who helped Palace bridge the gap in the Premier League. I wish him well in his future endeavours.

Good luck Gary and thanks

Tehran cup

vendredi 18 novembre 2022

I searched used Tehran and Iran and nowt came up, so this may be a first time it's been mentioned..

Good article on the club website today (before the England game on Monday) about a cup we won 50 years ago, against Persepholis (the top team of the time who Alan Whittle played for) the cup is in our "trophy cabinet"

The likes of Don Rogers and John Jackson played and we apparently one 5-1 with a couple from Alan Pinkney and Bobby Kellard getting one.

Obviously this was during the time of the Shah, before the revolution, I doubt whether the club would undertake a tour now.

I doubt if many (any) South Londoners ventured on the trip?

Best ex-Palace players, who became managers, but never managed us

Hi, I'll start with Chris Coleman.

Loved him as a player, once met the guy and his family in person.

Often linked to Palace but never appointed. Mixed views on him on here for sure, but how many ex-palace managers took a nation to the semifinals of an international tournament?

Pob Lwc Cymru

With quite a bit of Welsh ancestry in me, I'll be looking for the Welsh results after the English ones

Love the fact that another home counties country has got there, some good Palace connections in the team as well. Great team spirit as well, hope they get out of the group

Suggestion: Jeffinho

As we're playing Botafogo in the friendly maybe we're going to be taking a look at Jeffinho.

He's a pacy winger and if Wilf is off then maybe a replacement?

Newcastle and West Ham supposed to be sniffing around but surely with the Textor connection we're ahead of the pack.

The friendly would give him a chance to look around too but hopefully that won't put him off.

Windows Update Messing with Ethernet

Much to the delight of Maidstone Eagle, I am seeking advice with a PC computer issue.

Over the last few days when shutting down my PC it has "suggested" I do an update. Being somewhat gullible, I accepted this "Update and shutdown" request.

Next morning, I can get on my browser (Firefox) but no websites will open. After half a day of frustration I uninstall and reinstall Firefox and it seems to work as normal again.

Today, I get the same "Update and shutdown" request and like the fool I am I accept that. Once again browser opens but website will not open (neither Firefox, Chrome or even Edge).

After much Googling on my phone (WiFi working fine) I see something about disconnecting my Ethernet, which is how I have my PC set up. I disconnect the Ethernet, and sure as heck browsers work fine (hence me being able to post this). I plug the Ethernet cable back in, and sure as shit websites are not accessible again.

More Google searching is not helping beyond telling me to check the cable, which I really don't think is the issue. I'm convinced it is something associated with the Windows update.

Any ideas other than getting an Apple?

What goal hit you most in the feels?

So, I'm watching To view the link you have to Register or Login on a quiet Friday evening at home and I've been trying to work out which Palace goal hit me the hardest in terms of physical emotion.

I remember screaming with a Street brother at Wembley when HLTCO. I remember literally running out of the room at home when Freedman netted at Stockport.

In terms of emotional goals, I'm not sure that anything in recent years has touched Puncheon's finish against Norwich. I'm not sure if his reaction caused me to be a bit soft or not, but hell, it meant something.

So as we approach a break in moral football, in your years of Palace, which goal has brought the biggest swell of emotion?

Share your world cup predictions

Because I am a sad sack I Googled one of those predictor thingies while on the train down to London yesterday and mapped out my tournament. As a family we have also put a few modest wagers on.

I thought it might be fun for some of us to expose our predictions on here, and then look back on how they pan out as the tournament progresses. So in summary I have:

Winners Argentina
Runners up Denmark
Losing semi-finalists Brazil and Serbia
England to reach the quarter finals
Top scorer Mitrovic
Player of the tournament Vinicius Junior
Golden gloves Schmeichel

England win their group and once again find themselves in the easier half of the draw. They dispatch Ghana in the second round despite Ayew's heroics, but then succumb to Denmark in the quarters, who in turn overturn surprise package Serbia to get to the final.

Argentina by contrast navigate an epic path to the trophy, overcoming France, Holland and Brazil in successive knockout games before vanquishing Denmark in the final. The semi against Brazil is a battle for the ages.

My logic for Mitrovic as top scorer is that it often turns out to be a fairly left field choice rather than one of the established top names, and it can be someone who bags a load of goals in the easier group stage (see Kane last time out). Mitrovic goes into the tournament high on confidence, he's been prolific for his nation and I'm backing him to get a hatful against Cameroon to set him on his way.

I must admit to a degree of confirmation bias when predicting the scores of all the matches, I had in mind the teams who I favoured anyway and this would have influenced my thinking.

The Reform Party and the Next Election

Of course they're a strange cultish bunch but the latest polls have these guys at around 8%. I am guessing they are hoovering up disenchanted Boris fans but that's not far off what the Lib Dems are polling. If they score anything like that they're going to cost the Tories dozens of seats.

Remembrance Day 2022

jeudi 10 novembre 2022

Arthur Maurice Cooper, my grandfather served in the Lincolnshire Regiment, from 1904 until he “died of his wounds” as a POW in Berlin in Jan 1915. Buried in Potsdam, Germany.

He is remembered on the Bawtry War Memorial, South Yorkshire, which was originally positioned on the very busy A638. In 2018, the council decided to move it to Bawtry library to make it more accessible and safer for public access.

On the old memorial he was listed as A. N. Cooper, and thanks to my cousins still living in the area, when the new memorial was erected his name was corrected to A. M. Cooper.

Tickets for uefa fixtures in March

I'm planning a family trip from north america to london in late March 2023. I'd like the family to go see England vs Ukraine UEFA qualifying and the Palace game at home on April 1st. Is it possible/easy to get tickets to these two matches or impossible? Would i have to look at the secondary/scalpers market. Any input your have is appreciated.

Are we unfashionable/unpopular/underrated?

First of all, if we are any of these things, I actually don’t mind really - I quite like flying under the radar.

But is it just me, or does it sometimes seem like our face as a club doesn’t quite fit with what people perceive the Premier League is, or should be? Of course we get praised from certain sections, mostly for our forward players (though the talk about them is usually pretty generic and cliched), but compared to more or less every other team in the league, I don’t feel like we get as many column inches or discussions focussed on us etc?

Maybe it’s because we’re one of a number of London teams? But considering the calibre of a number of our players, and the diversity of our squad, coaching staff and fan base, I’m surprised people don’t talk about us more. Whether it’s MNF, or 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, or The Overlap or whatever else, it just feels to me like we don’t often feature - and our players are never really bigged up compared to others. How many centre halves have objectively been better than Andersen this season? The media have their favourites, but there has been almost constant chatter/campaigning for Coady/Maddison to make the England squad, for instance, but basically nothing about Guehi and Eze for example. I think both should be in the England squad, and the former’s omission is particularly baffling to me.

Fans of a lot of fans may feel a bit like this, but sometimes I feel we’re disrespected, despite our current lengthy tenure in the league. Because we don’t splash hundreds of millions, and/or didn’t have a historical successful spell where we won trophies at some point, it almost feels like we’re almost an inconvenience to many/don’t really deserve our place here. Plus our fans seem to come in for more stick than most, mostly it seems for being different in the way we support our team?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Newcastle

mercredi 9 novembre 2022

We were better first half, they were better 2nd half. Not many clear chances. Mateta had a good shot saved, we nearly gifted them a goal after 20 seconds in the second half. Johnstone made one other decent save.

The back 5 did well. Hughes was better 1st half than 2nd. Olise and Luka were below par. Mateta was good and Ayew was superb.

We deserved a draw. The penalties were shocking. They were poor, we were worse.

Good luck to the lady but there does seem to be a few opening so she may do well hopefully.

Boz Boorer from Polecats had a shop in london, now it's in Portugal so maybe it's a trend.

Maybe she'll be the new Beanos!

Smart Heating Thermostats

Have recently moved and the house we moved to has an old style thermostat.

Have been looking into Smart Heating thermostats.

Seems the popular and most common choice is Hive.

Looking around seems ‘Nest’ is getting good reviews.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Or just go with Hive. Want to get the smart radiator valves aswell.

Bath City Player (Alex Fletcher) head injury

Collided with advertising hoarding which were attached to a concrete wall.

Match was abandoned and he was rushed to hospital where he required emergency neurosurgery to stabilise his condition. Still in a critical condition.

Took 40, yes FORTY, minutes for an ambulance to arrive

All the best to the lad :(

Freehold/ Leasehold advice

Question aimed at those that would be somewhat of an expert in this field.

I've a relative who owns a 1st Floor Maisonette on a reducing Leashold basis (down to 70 years ish I believe)

The Freehold for the whole property (comprising Ground Floor Maisonette and the 1st Floor Maisonette above) is owned by the guy that lives in the Ground Floor Maisonette.

I take it the relatives on the 1st Floor could in theory offer to sell that property to the guy in the Ground Floor, particularly as he's always been keen to own the whole property, and thus the issue of their needing to increase the lease on their part of the property would dissapear?

Any advice/comments?

Suggestion: Philip Billing

Here's my best suggestion yet! There have been a lot of bad ones I'll admit, so hardly much competition. :D Anyway, I'll make the case for him. The complete midfielder. Left footed, good technically. Could play as a 6 alongside Doucoure. Could also play as an 8 if Vieira wants to go back to a single pivot, or possibly even further forward. Lots of Premier League experience, physically strong, and excellent in the air which our team probably needs. Only has 18 months left on his contract. We were interested before. Might we be interested again if Bournemouth go down?

Crystal Ball: League Cup: Saudi Bar Codes Away

Having won at the Kassam Stadium in the previous round, we now move on to another away tie, this time at the Saudi Bar Codes.

As usual the score, scorers and attendance.

A reminder of the cup rules from the ongoing thread: "Cup matches are based on the result of the match before any penalties. Therefore if the match goes to penalties then the match is judged to be a draw, regardless of who wins the shootout."

Unsung Heroes

I'd like to kick off this thread with a special mention for Nathaniel Clyne (and for the Palace management team, too)

Due to our dreadful situation we had to watch this guy move on and other clubs reap the benefit. But after playing for Liverpool and England he didn't see himself as too big to come back and relaunch his career at Palace.

In his second tenure he has been nothing short of a modal professional sharing the spot with Ward. And putting in some very steady performances.

Well done Sir.

Life After Zaha

Although there might be some hope he will stay so we can keep kicking the can down the road, the chances are that Wilfred Zaha will be off by season's end. Then, that question we've all dreaded facing will have to be answered; 'how do we survive, let alone prosper, without him?' The larger question is, where do we invest to try to make up for his loss?

For the sake of argument, let's assume Zaha is definitely going and the club knows it must spend big. The same level of outlay as the summer when PV arrived. Where should the money go, given our existing strengths / weaknesses?

Should it be forking out massively on a 'new Ian Wright,' which would fix the loss of Zaha's goals and give us the pace and potency our attack would lose?

Or do we stick with our current strikers and spend on a pacy winger who can cross and also get in an attacking midfielder, in the Gallagher mode, who will give us back some threat ( and goals ) through the middle?

Or perhaps we should concentrate on making the midfield and defence ultra-robust and mean, allowing us to get by on what would be a less potent creative unit of just Eze, Olise, Ewobei ( hopefully ) and Schlupp, perhaps playing behind either Edouard or JPM? Revisit the loss of Zaha after a season of survival?

Thoughts?

Suggested Team and Formation For: Nottingham Forest (away)

dimanche 6 novembre 2022

———————————Guaita—————————————-
Clyne———Andersen————-Guehi—————-Mitchell
—————-Doucoure————Schlupp—————————
Ayew———————————————————-Eze
———————————-Olise————————————-
———————————-Zaha—————————————

Becomes 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 when in possession with Mitchell pushing into midfield and Eze released into the pockets, the same as against West Ham.

Edouard first sub if he is fit. Love the solidity of that side with the double pivot away from home. (Do think that Schlupp and Luka as the 2nd pivot options can be upgraded in the transfer window, as we can’t rely on 35 year old McArthur.) Also, seeing Clyne against West Ham reminds us what a weakness club legend Wardy is when we are in possession. That’s another area we must upgrade soon. But in terms of what we currently have, that’s our strongest XI away from home. Well done to Vieira for finding it.

Mark Guehi Interview Premier League

Very impressive. I know these are soft interviews and of course he ticks all the boxes/ 'fans best in League'/ in awe of manager. But what comes across is a very mature nice guy. Feet definitely on the ground - if that isn't an oxymoron for a centre back.
Think we're very lucky to have him - you can see why he is captain material. Long may he stay here. With Anderson they complement each other and one of best centre back pairings for some time.

Rumour: AWB - Jan 23

samedi 5 novembre 2022

Nixon:

Manchester United will let Aaron Wan-Bissaka go ‘home’ to Crystal Palace if the clubs can agree a loan deal.

Wan-Bissaka is well out of favour under Erik ten Hag — playing just four minutes for the first team as a substitute back in August and only getting a brief look at the bench in recent weeks.

Palace boss Patrick Vieira would take their former defender back but a loan move is the only way he can afford him — and that will take some negotiating.

Palace may have to pick up all of Wan-Bissaka’s £80,000-a-week wages making it an expensive deal even without having to pay a transfer fee.

The West Yorkshire club signed Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020 with an obligation to buy the Frenchman for 21m euros on a five-year-deal if they secured Premier League promotion for 21m euros, due in three instalments.

Augustin, who now plays for Swiss side Basel, struggled with fitness and injury during his time at Elland Road, featuring for 48 minutes across three substitute appearances.

Leeds won promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2019-20 season but disputed whether the "purchase obligation" for Augustin had been triggered as the Covid-19 pandemic had interrupted the campaign.

On this day - 4th November 1972

jeudi 3 novembre 2022

Always love bringing this one up .....and another year has passed.

50 years ago today … thats 50 … Don Roger's debut on November 4th at home against Everton.

I can still remember it as though it was yesterday.

On 23 minutes, Rogers broke away from inside his own half, racing onto a through ball from John Craven, as England fullback Henry Newton chased in vain, Don coolly chipped Everton goalkeeper David Lawson into the Whitehorse Lane goal.

Sir Don ... the reason for my ridiculous 50 year rollercoaster ride ..

Iconic Goals

Seeing Bipe's comment below in the Ronnie Radford RIP thread got me thinking about this.

Radford's goal was most certainly iconic. Other contenders, imho, would be:

Maradona - both goals against England in 1986, but for reasons at completely opposite ends of the spectrum (cheating bastard / absolute brilliance);

Ricky Villa for Spurs v Man City in the FA Cup Final;

Geoff Hurst in 1966 "They think it's all over...";

But for me I think the most iconic goal was Brazil's brilliant goal by Carlos Alberto in the WC Final against Italy in 1970, brilliant play in the build-up, and Pele's almost nonchalant lay-off into CA's path.

Others?

Crystal Ball: WHU (a)

They're the worst gammon and we have to play them. Score, scorers and attendance please.

1-1
Zaha, Bowen

Suggestion: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

He’s 29! Can’t believe he’s that old. Can play left wing, but can also play centre mid which I believe is his favourite position. Works hard, has some talent. Yes, he’s had injuries. But experienced and could do well in centre mid for many years? Not bad at pressing IIRC. Just putting it out there as Liverpool are apparently willing to sell. Not many miles on the clock is positive. Even if he loses his pace it won’t matter so much for centre mid. Surely has at least 5 years in him. (Just a question of how many appearances that equates to!)

Well this thread might bomb :) Anyway...

Given that we have quite a few amateur cooks on here and that there is a thread for Get Me Out of Here etc. let's see if anyone else is on dis ting.

From the NF thread.

Well, would you?

Palace Kit question

Hi All,

I got a home signed shirt and the Palace badge and Macron badge is embroidered. Can someone tell me if that's right? My third shirt isn't embroidered which I got direct from the CPFC shop on matchday.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Newcastle away (cup)

Personally, I don’t think we will beat Newcastle. League is much more important anyway at this stage. We are not far off competing for Europa League and Forest game is extremely winnable and deserves all our resources. Don’t think we should play a single first team player. Maybe something like this:

———-—————Johnstone————————-
Clyne——Ferguson———-Tomkins——Riedewald
—————————-Hughes——————————
—————Schlupp————-McArthur—————-
Ebiowei—————-Mateta——————-Ayew

Who's going to the World Cup?

mardi 1 novembre 2022

AFAIK:

Likely Going
Joachim Anderson (Denmark)
Jordan Ayew (Ghana)
Jeffrey Schlupp (Ghana) according to this To view the link you have to Register or Login

Potentially going but probably not
Chris Richards (USA) - Coming off injury
Marc Guehi (England) - Not in form, called up last window but not named to squad
Eberechi Eze (England) - Has never been capped for England
Tyrick Mitchell (England) - Not in form, missed last call-up window

What did I miss? Also, is there international youth action at the same time that might see some Palace players?

Rumour: Isaiah Jones - Middlesbrough wing-back

Give Me Sport
To view the link you have to Register or Login

'According to Football League World, West Ham and Premier League rivals Crystal Palace are showing a keen interest in Jones.

However, the report suggests it will be difficult for either of the London clubs to get a deal over the line as Middlesbrough have no intention of allowing the wing-back, who has made 64 appearances for his current employers, to leave midway through the campaign.

The Championship side are also under no pressure to sell Jones as his contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2025.'
