First of all, if we are any of these things, I actually don’t mind really - I quite like flying under the radar.
But is it just me, or does it sometimes seem like our face as a club doesn’t quite fit with what people perceive the Premier League is, or should be? Of course we get praised from certain sections, mostly for our forward players (though the talk about them is usually pretty generic and cliched), but compared to more or less every other team in the league, I don’t feel like we get as many column inches or discussions focussed on us etc?
Maybe it’s because we’re one of a number of London teams? But considering the calibre of a number of our players, and the diversity of our squad, coaching staff and fan base, I’m surprised people don’t talk about us more. Whether it’s MNF, or 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, or The Overlap or whatever else, it just feels to me like we don’t often feature - and our players are never really bigged up compared to others. How many centre halves have objectively been better than Andersen this season? The media have their favourites, but there has been almost constant chatter/campaigning for Coady/Maddison to make the England squad, for instance, but basically nothing about Guehi and Eze for example. I think both should be in the England squad, and the former’s omission is particularly baffling to me.
Fans of a lot of fans may feel a bit like this, but sometimes I feel we’re disrespected, despite our current lengthy tenure in the league. Because we don’t splash hundreds of millions, and/or didn’t have a historical successful spell where we won trophies at some point, it almost feels like we’re almost an inconvenience to many/don’t really deserve our place here. Plus our fans seem to come in for more stick than most, mostly it seems for being different in the way we support our team?
