Because I am a sad sack I Googled one of those predictor thingies while on the train down to London yesterday and mapped out my tournament. As a family we have also put a few modest wagers on.
I thought it might be fun for some of us to expose our predictions on here, and then look back on how they pan out as the tournament progresses. So in summary I have:
Winners Argentina
Runners up Denmark
Losing semi-finalists Brazil and Serbia
England to reach the quarter finals
Top scorer Mitrovic
Player of the tournament Vinicius Junior
Golden gloves Schmeichel
England win their group and once again find themselves in the easier half of the draw. They dispatch Ghana in the second round despite Ayew's heroics, but then succumb to Denmark in the quarters, who in turn overturn surprise package Serbia to get to the final.
Argentina by contrast navigate an epic path to the trophy, overcoming France, Holland and Brazil in successive knockout games before vanquishing Denmark in the final. The semi against Brazil is a battle for the ages.
My logic for Mitrovic as top scorer is that it often turns out to be a fairly left field choice rather than one of the established top names, and it can be someone who bags a load of goals in the easier group stage (see Kane last time out). Mitrovic goes into the tournament high on confidence, he's been prolific for his nation and I'm backing him to get a hatful against Cameroon to set him on his way.
I must admit to a degree of confirmation bias when predicting the scores of all the matches, I had in mind the teams who I favoured anyway and this would have influenced my thinking.
