The problem we have with Christian Benteke, whether you like him or not, is that his contract is said to be expiring at the end of next season. If true, I am surprised we paid £28m for a player and only gave him a 4 year deal, most deals are 5 years at that level. Maybe it is 4 years with a 1 year option?
Whatever the case, this can only go one of three ways. We either try to sell him, offer him a new contract or he runs his contract down.
Currently, his stock is low and nobody would want to pay big money for his fee or his wages. I'd be surprised if we got £15m for him baring in mind his type of striker (Giroud and Llorente) are not in demand these days.
So, we try to give him a new contract. He is rumoured to be on over £100k a week, he isn't worth that at the moment so it stands to reason we'd offer him less. As he is currently 28 (his turns 29 in December) this might be his last chance at a big contract so I think he would turn down less money than he is currently getting.
So this only leaves what I think will happen and that is that he will run his contract down so he will get to the summer of 2020 as a free agent. Doing so will mean he can sign for another club on a big deal as the signing club will be saving millions on a transfer fee and we'll lose £28m in the process.
Even if he plays a blinder next season and makes the Euro squad for Belgium unless he signs a new deal he will walk for free.
Do you think we should just get what we can for him this summer use him while we can and let him go for free in 15 months time?
