How would you fix UK Transport

lundi 25 mars 2019

Congratulations, you are now the Transport Minister for the UK. How do you fix issues with cars, how do you fix issues with buses, with rail and with airports.

Roads

Make every motorway a smart motorway, but, allow this to increase speed limits in "perfect" conditions from 70 to 80.

Abolish road tax and make it a legal requirement for every vehicle to be fitted with a GPS Tracker that will then weekly/monthly/yearly charge 1p per mile driven. Discounts will be available to business/freight etc. and off-peak time of travel.

This fund will then go straight into road development funds and funds into new fuel technology working alongside manufacturers.

Cap fuel pricing at £1 per litre for petrol and £1.10 for diesel.

Fully motorway the A1 from London to Scotland.

Extend the M5 Motorway from Exeter to Penzance.
Extend the M11 Motorway from Cambridge to Hull.

Create three new East to West Motorways by upgrading the A14, A66 and A69
Create a new motorway from the M11 to Norwich (the M12?)

Create a North to South Welsh Motorway from Cardiff to Chester and a new West to East Welsh Motorway from Holyhead to Shrewsbury.

Trains

Fully electrify the entire UK Rail Network.

Standardise all carriages and facilities on board to create one big network.

Introduce a pay as you go 1p per mile (based on track distances). Discounts will be available to business/freight etc. and off-peak time of travel.

Create a new London Orbital Railway that vaguely follows the path of the M25 with big parking areas at certain points to encourage people to stay away from Central London for commuting.

Create a new West to East "Cornwall to Kent" railway that avoids London.

Create a sport railcard that will give you access to pre-paid but, changeable tickets for any sporting event registered onto the website. Governing bodies - the FA, the RFU etc. will need to register the events.

Buses

Non-Profit, every penny from fares put back into network improvements. Especially rural routes.

1p per mile with discounts for Under 16s, 18s and OAPS and off-peak travelling.

Airplanes

Two new national airports to be built, one in the South, in-between the M4, M5 and M40 in the South with dedicated motorway and public transport links. One to be built in the North in-between the A1(M), M6 and new A69(M)/A66(M) Motorways.

Offer improvements to Newcastle/Manchester/Cardiff/Edinburgh/Southampton/Birmingham Airports.
