New (first) car advice

Hi all, as title says I'm after some advice.

Passed my test last year but now looking for first car as soon as possible really. Anyone got any tips as to what would be a good choice for a first timer and where to get it from?

Looking for something pretty decent in great condition really... Any other considerations that will factor please ask. Budget is more about cheaper insurance than cost of car.
