I am currently working in Thailand, but came over to the UK last weekend for an interview.
The job advert stated September 2017 start or as soon as possible - I have evidence of this. However, when I arrived the employer started talking about a January start which is not possible for me. Despite him offering me the job, I had to decline.
The problem is he is now refusing to pay my air fare saying it was a mistake on the advert (claiming it wasn't his fault) and I should have realised this mistake as on his own website it stated that the potential candidate needed to start as soon as possible and as the advert went live in October 2016, I should have realised September was not the start date.
I should also say this is a teaching role, so employing far in advance is not unusual. It would not be strange to attend an interview in October for a position starting in September the next year.
I have emails from him saying he would pay for my airfare for the interview and emails admitting the mistake on the job advert. I don't think he has a leg to stand on personally, but he is financially wealthy and is trying to bully me out of the airfare (£750).
What is my best course of action? Can I still contact a "no win no fee" lawyer if I am based in Thailand currently?
I should also say that whilst I have maintained a professional line throughout all my emails, he has been very angry and insulting, saying that I am "pathologically dishonest" in his last email.
