Watching the documentary channel yesterday when they covered the sinking of the Lancastria , a liner converted into a troopship in ww2, It took off troops from St, Nazare (sp) to head back to the UK with several thousand troops onboard, perhaps as many as 6,000.
The troops were ferried out to the ship by a warship and soon (still within sight of land) after they set sail they were hit by four German bombs.
The numbers killed were far in excess of other maritime deaths and our Government decided that the tragedy should be kept away from the public because of the effect on morale.
A memorial records 4,000 victims, because of the numbers involved and the failure/inability to record who was on the ship nobody can be certain of the correct total.
It was reported a few years back that Hull was bombed so heavily during the war that a decision was made to hide this fact from the general public.
Makes you wonder how many other events have been hidden from the public?
