Ratings are To view the link you have to Register or Login big time and I don't think that's a temporary trend. Here in the US, the NFL is experiencing the same sharp decline in TV ratings. Of course, the NFL has decided it is because each team's twitter accounts were tweeting too many highlights and banned it. I doubt UK viewing habits by demographic are much different than the US, where TV viewing is in steep decline. Especially with young people.
I think all the current TV rights deals last until 2019. If the viewership trend continues, surely the next rights fees will more than likely decrease. Or, is it possible that money is replaced from other territories? Most Premier League teams make the bulk of their revenue from the TV rights fees. (The top teams look like they make half or less of their revenue from TV rights fees) Of course, that was based on the previous TV rights fees, with the new deals in place TV rights probably make an even larger percentage of revenue for teams. Eventually, the money will have to come back down. How long before that happens? What will be the effect on the entire League? Will teams play in empty stadiums, streaming games online? Will people stop watching altogether and go back to watching games in the stadium? Will Manchester United just move to Hong Kong?
