Palace U18s 1-0 Ipswich U18s

Palace started the day in 3rd place in the South division of the Category 2 league (as usual, Charlton sit at the top).

The venue was a very, very, very windswept Goals in Copers Cope Road. Wind was so strong that was struggle to stand up straight at times. So both teams deserve credit for trying to play football in such difficult conditions.

Apologies some of names not spot on as still working out who is who with some of the lads who have recently moved up from U16s.

GK Oliver Pain
RB Terrique ??
LB Callum Sturgess
CB Jalen Jones
CB Emmanuel Omrore
RM Andre Coker
CM Dan Hogan
CM Ollie Bennett
LM Levi Lumeak (Joseph Humbo)
AM Kian Flanagn
CF Daly (sub number 13)

Ipswich passed ball around nicely at the start but Hogan screen well in front of the Palace back 4.

6 mins – Omrore puts close range header over bar from Coker FK

18 – Town cross from the right lands on roof of net

22 – Town number 8 blazes over bar from edge of area

26 – Palace RB near post left foot shot is close

30 – Pain off line quickly to collect thru ball

32 – Deflection puts Town 10 clean thru but Pain makes great save to thwart him

36 – Town player throws himself at header but glances off head and is long way wide

40 – lovely move, Hogan spreads lovely pass wide to Lumeak who hits ball pinpoint to far post to Coker but he cuts inside and hits left foot shot over bar when well placed to score

50 – Town break, important Sturgess saving tackle

Wind winnig the game as both teams struggle to create any chances

70 – Town 8 does well to lift shot so high that it almost clears the back netting which is there to try and save keeper having to go fetch off target shots

75 – Town keep flies out Superman style to punch clear good Coker cross, Town break and Omrore makes important interception to clear for Palace

76 – Palace break, Flanagan feeds sub 13 whose low cross shot just misses far post

80 – Palace 13 taken out by keep on edge pen. Sturgess FK looks goalbound but headed away as seems sure to go in

85 – GOAL – Coker and Flanagan over complicate chance and its looks to be wasted but Palace recover half clearance and lovely cross from the right is side footed home on volley at far post by left wing sub Joseph Humbo

Palace survive a couple of late half chances to take the win.

Pain was very good. Made what saves he needed to. Organised defence. Good clearance even into the gale.

RB (not sure of his name) – tiny but tenacious. Excellent on ball and without it. Think he has just moved up from U16s. Did very well.

Sturgess also very good. Defensively solid. Energy to get forward well. Takes a good dead ball.

Both CB Jones and Omrore were MOM for me. Very solid. Won their tackles and restricted Town to shots from outside pen. Handled defending into strong wind in 2nd half well. Jones clearly likes being on ball and found time to show off some fancy foot work in 2nd half.

Hogan won lot of tackles and used ball well. Screened defence well.
Bennett was competitive throughout. Covered a lot of ground and put tackles in on a day when conditions did not suit as he is more of a ball player than a destroyer.

Lumeka struggled to make as much of an impression as he has in recent games, Not a day for the wingers as wind meant they did not see much of the ball. Coker came into game more as it went on and would beat 1 or 2 but lose it when trying to beat a 3rd man.

Flanagan struggled to get on ball first half and was guilty of trying to do too much himself. But was more of a factor 2nd half and looked most likely to create a good chance for Palace. Clearly can play.

Daly – battled manfully against 2 bigger CB’s but little chance to get on the ball.
