Best way to explain it for people who do not follow French politics is to imagine a situation in which UKIP won the largest share of the popular vote but Labour stepped down and encouraged its supporters to vote for the Conservatives to scupper UKIP.
Also saw a claim, that i have not been able to verify at this moment in time, that about 61% of the 16-24 vote when either to the FN or Republicans. That is a staggering amount of young people voting for right wing parties.
