Ok. So it's late and I should probably consider sleep but I kind of wanted to address a point I've seen made by a lot of people as to why certain players who were fantastic under Pulis have struggled to reach the same form under Pardew and I kind of wanted to try and explain as I don't think anyone has.
1.
Pulis was a hard bastard in a different way than Pardew: Pulis demands, Pardew coaxes. You'll get more out of the technical players under Pardew because he's patient and thinks long term. Pulis is an out and out results manager, more likely to say that if it don't work, don't do it again, even if it might work the next time.
2.
Pulis played almost like table football: players moved in straight lines or diagonals. rarely would play ever massively change direction like we do now. We're looking to be more cultured and fluid and play a wider variety of passes. which again suits certain players more than others.
3.
Pulis was regimented and told every player exactly what to do and where to be, so organised they barely had to think. Pardew wants players to play it about and look for options and basically trust their ability.
Realistically to compete at the top level playing the football and being harsh I'd split the players into these catagories, this is just a way to show that we shouldn't get carried away and expect too much.
Certs (top 10 premier league players)
Cabaye
Zaha
McArthur
Dann
Chamahk
Puncheon
that's only 6 of our 25 that are defo top 10 quality.
Potentials (players who could with a bit of development reach that level)
Souare
Wickham
Mcarthy
Sako
Ledley
Ward
Bolasie
Kelly
Mutch
Speroni
Hennessy
Gayle
Solid Lower half Premiership players/players with that potential
Players who can do it on their day
Lee
Jedinak
Murray
Delany
Brede
Campbell
Pep
Bannan
Williams
Players who can do a job in this league but either through age or just will have erratic patches/injuries arent consistent.
The more you bring in players in the top bracket, who are used to a higher level the more the players in the second bracket develop, however as the mean level of quality increases some of those in the lower brackets will struggle to keep up.
the way Pulis set up suited those in the lower brackets more and used the players in the higher brackets as like star power almost.
Pardew wants to drag the overall level of the group up and develop which is going to show some of the other players limitations off a bit more especially trying to play football against the bigger, better teams.
Long story short, don't write anyone off but don't be surprised if a lot of that bottom bracket are sold/loaned out/benched and some of the middle brackets will develop and some will falter and despite looking like they have something to offer not feature regularly.
