people "blackout" even if they don't have any head trauma?

I've just been watching a show about crashes/accidents (cars/planes/boats etc) and one thing I noticed was the amount of people saying they don't remember the impact and had woken up after everything had settled. These people had no head injuries whatsoever so I was wondering what happens, Does your body simply shut down in anticipation of a huge impact or are you just so in shock you believe you blackout but in reality you were conscious the whole time?

I've been in three car accidents (2 as a passenger) and I remember them all vividly but in slow motion
