Just what it says.

Let's get enough posts in support of this thread so the club can see the error of their ways.

If you don't sit in the Stephenson think further ahead as if the 'experiment' works it's coming to a part of the ground near you soon.

Lack of Crystals

Sitting in the cold front corner of the AW waiting for the second half to start, my wife was watching the Girls doing their dance in the cold.

" They never ever come over to this side of the pitch at any game, its always in front of the main stand both dances"! Why she asked me?

So why do the ladies always perform for one side of the ground? If its a private dance can the club just not bother please!

Made me laugh anyways.

.

The ever frustrating "floated" ball into the box......

seen many many times today. The aimless floated ball into the box from corners, free kicks and open play.

Its something that should be left in the championship or leagues below.

Anyone can do it.

It is a wasted opportunity to whip a ball in or put in a decent cross field ball.

Extremely frustrating when it seems we now have decent ball players in the side.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.

Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.

Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Aitor Karanka

Just seen the end of the Middlesbrough game at Brentford. We were seriously linked to Karanka before we got Pulis last season. I think the guy has a big future in the game. Was disappointed we didn't give him a chance, but in hindsight I think it was the right decision at the time.

A long way to go this season, but he is doing a food job at Boro, given the expectation and how long they have been down now. A proper football man I think with a good philosophy, and a solid no nonsense attitude.

I will be following his managerial career with great interest.

Palace's Chances Of A Top 10 Finish

Yesterday i bet £20 at 10/1 for Palace to finish in the top 10.

Last Season I put £20 on Palace to stay up when we were adrift at the bottom and Ian Holloway was our manager and ended up winning £140.

I am not a gambler but these were very good odds.

What's The Worst Retail Brand in the UK?

My vote would go straight to Currys, whose incompetence and lack of very basic customer care almost defies belief.

(I'd tell you the story about what makes me think this : the failure to deliver on promises, and the failure to communicate and the various lies told by staff; but for the fact that the internet is bursting with similar stories all about Currys being utter crap and I don't want to break it).

My question is if Currys aren't the worst place to buy anything in the UK, then where is (other than the related PC World) ?

(A subsidiary question might be whether anyone anywhere has anything good to say about Currys?).

Should this politician be charged with child abuse?

A few days before the Queensland state election here in Australia politician Jason Deller was caught on camera in a restaurant pouring a jug of water over his baby then whacking his young son across the face (while his wife sat there and did nothing). He then rips the baby out of its seat nearly pulling his arms out of his sockets. He and his fellow politicians basically laughed it off at first until it caused an uproar so today he resigned from the race with the worst "I didn't mean it" speech complete with fake crying

Apparently that's not child abuse as police have confirmed he won't be charged.:grrr:

Apart from the video evidence I find it quite telling his wife sat there and did **** all. It suggests to me it's not an unusual occurrence.

I'm not going crazy, he should have been charged, right?

Would you be read this? A new Palace book - The Football Addiction.

jeudi 29 janvier 2015

I have been working on a book about following Palace in the 2009/10 season – administration, ghost goals and the little matter of Hillsborough. The book should be available in April for both ebook and paperback copies.

I’ll be honest and admit that I started writing it purely as a hobby but I have decided to publish it after putting a lot of effort into it. I wanted to try to gauge interest in the book by posting on here.

Follow on twitter and like on facebook for more details over the next couple of months:

Here is the blub:

For many, football isn’t about winning or losing. It isn’t even about twenty two players kicking a pig’s bladder about. For many, football is simply a way of life, involving friendship, beer and escaping the wife (or indeed husband for some!)

Despite following the average football displayed by Crystal Palace, James Howland, a trainee primary school teacher and self-diagnosed football addict, makes a vow to ignore work, financial, friendship and family responsibilities to attend every single League and Cup game in the 2009/10 season.

Follow his journey as he travels from Plymouth to Newcastle to Swansea, making light-hearted observations about the events during and around games, people who frequent matches, and the absurdness of situations faced by your every day football supporter – all the while trying to balance his addiction with university and work life. As most years are for most football fans, it’s hardly a season of glory and silverware. Although as long suffering supporters, we’re more comfortable and familiar with pain, misery and a good old moan at the referee. However, during the season, Crystal Palace fall into administration and James is forced to unpick just how much his addiction means to him...

Here is chapter one. Any feedback is welcome.

The Football Addiction

Chapter One – We all follow the Palace

Football doesn’t always make sense. In fact, it rarely does. How can teams in lower leagues on shoe string budgets beat top flight millionaires? How can world class players, like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, fail so spectacularly to play well together? How can every fan in England support ‘the unluckiest team in the world?’ How can a new ‘worst referee’ be found every single week? How can the sport be immune to the biggest recession in decades and continue to grow in wealth as the population scrounges around for money? But most baffling of all, why on earth do football fans turn up, spending small fortunes, travelling all over the country to obscure towns and cities, despite being served up crap, week after week after week? Total and utter crap in many cases.

In fact, if you counted up all the minutes that a football fan spent talking about how crap their team was, you would probably find that they had enough time to do something fairly productive, such as curing cancer or saving the rainforest (or in some cases, saving their marriage). But why would anyone want to do something productive when they could be having a beer, ranting at referees and be despairing over just how useless their team is?

Despite the lack of logic, football is without doubt the most popular and in my humble opinion, best sport in the world. I’m not doubting the skill involved in other sports, nor the entertainment, but the emotion that you get in football is on a different level to anything else. You can experience anything from joy, pain, excitement, despair, anticipation, anger, surprise, fear, love, contempt, regret – and that’s just in the pub beforehand. No wonder so many fans need a pint by half time to calm their nerves.

Admittedly, supporting Crystal Palace is more about the anger, pain and misery. The whole experience is cold, overpriced and full of disappointment – just like the pies served up in the ground. However, even mundane and average teams such as mine do have their moments. In the previous fifteen years, I have seen promotions, cup semi-finals, last day survivals, play offs, a win at Anfield and most importantly, a 5-0 thrashing of B*ighton. Although this has been evened out with two relegations, losing cup semi-finals, being thrashed in the play offs, getting drenched and slaughtered at Cambridge in the FA Cup, and losing at home to some small south coast side who wear Tesco bags. (that’s Brighton for any non-Palace fans who don’t share our irrational hatred).

However, like thousands of deranged men and woman, I follow my club up and down the country. Whether they are in Plymouth or Newcastle, Swansea or Norwich, come Saturday afternoon (or sometimes a cold Tuesday evening) I’ll be there cheering on my team. Not that it does much good. We’re still crap. But it fills a Saturday afternoon, lets me see my mates, releases my anger and gives me the chance for a good ol’ piss up.

So why Crystal Palace? Why did I choose this particular method of self harming over all the others? I certainly wasn’t from the area. I’d grown up in Ascot so Reading, Brentford or Aldershot would have been more logical addictions geographically. My Dad was born in Bromley and after being taken to Selhurst by his teacher (imagine the press hearing about a story such as this now), was hooked for life. He had then gone on to have three children and as a father, he had failed them. One Liverpool fan, one Manchester United fan and one Tottenham fan. And then came me.

At the tender age of seven, when my football addiction began, my three older brothers each grabbed a limb and pulled me as hard as they could towards their team. Eventually, I came up with a plan. Whoever wins the FA Cup, I’ll support. Come cup final day, United beat Liverpool and that was it, I was a Manchester United supporter. For life right? You can’t ever change your team.

A couple of weeks later, I walked up to my Dad while he was in the garden, mowing the lawn. “Daddy, who’s that football team who you support?” I enquired.

“Crystal Palace, son,” proudly professed my father.

“Well you’ve got four sons and none support that team so I am going to,” I replied, as the perfect son. Since then, the United and Liverpool supporting brothers have been converted to Palace but the Spurs fan is still a lost soul. Although to this day, my Dad claims to have three and a half Crystal Palace supporters. About a year later, he took me to Wembley for my first ever live game to see us get promoted and it’s been downhill ever since.

It was at Wembley that my Crystal Palace addiction started. I remember walking along Wembley Way with my father and brother, experiencing my first banter with an opposition fan as a Sheffield United supporter mocked my scarf. I remember freezing, not knowing how to react to this attack on my club. I remember sitting high in the gods at the world-famous ground as I learnt my first terrace chants of ‘Ole, ole ole ole, Eagles, Eagles’. I remember the players looking tiny – far smaller than they had done on TV. I remember being told that I had to go to the toilet before the game as I wouldn’t be allowed to go until half time otherwise. I remember celebrating as our striker, Bruce Dyer, looked like he had scored, only to realise that the ball had hit the wrong side of the side netting. And most of all, I remember the pure elation as David Hopkin scored the last minute winner for our club. It was the perfect day.

Many fans claim to fall in love with a club for materialistic reasons – their badge, their colours, their location, their song or even a player. But I can’t say that it was our Eagle proudly perched above a ball on our badge. Nor was it the red and blue on the player’s shirt or our song, Glad All Over, which I remember my Dad telling me at Wembley was played before every game at our home ground, Selhurst Park. It certainly wasn’t a love of South London that made me fall for the club either. Although my Grandmother’s decision to live in Bromley and raise her kids there undoubtedly played a logistical part as I can’t imagine a Berkshire born kid would naturally fall for a second rate South London side. And as for falling in love with them for a player, it’s one thing to love a club because of Bobby Moore or George Best, but it would be quite sad to lay the blame of my addiction at the feet of Marc Edworthy.

No, I leant to love all of those things by association with the club. It sounds cheesy but it was a feeling of togetherness and belonging that had drawn me to the club. Approaching the ground, I had felt close to my family – we were in this together. A feeling that returns on the rare occasions that we all attend games together nowadays. However inside the ground, I felt an entirely new feeling of togetherness. I’d only ever met one Palace fan outside of my family before – Jonathan, a boy who played for the same Saturday morning team as me. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure that there were any more of us than that. I was laughed at by schoolmates for not supporting Manchester United or Chelsea. Suddenly, I found myself sat alongside tens of thousands of other Crystal Palace Supporters. I’d found where I belonged – nearly.

On that day, I knew where I belonged but I wasn’t quite part of it yet. There was one thing missing. I didn’t have a red and blue shirt. Everyone else did – although my brother pointed out that the guy behind us didn’t have a shirt at all: just an eagle tattooed across the whole of his back. Despite the scorching hot May sunshine, I kept my Crystal Palace sweatshirt on all day and religiously wrapped my new ‘Eagles at Wembley’ scarf around my neck as I tried to fit in. I couldn’t quite belong but I was going to do my best to try.

After that fateful day, the following years of my childhood saw me decline from a wide-eyed kid at Wembley, taking in the noise, colour and swearing that a first match brings, to an addicted and devoted supporter. I’m not really sure how the addiction happened. It started out as a harmless hobby. In the beginning, I would simply listen to the scores on the radio, when I had nothing else to do, and before I knew it, I was a teenager travelling up and down the country. I was going to every possible game, home and away. I was planning my life around football. Like any addiction, I don’t know where or when I descended into dependence on football, but just like people hooked on drugs or alcohol, I seem unable to function without it.

My story begins as the 2008/09 season was coming to a close. Personally, I was 19 and coming to the end of my second year of university where I was training to be a Primary School Teacher. As for Palace, despite flirting with the play offs over Christmas, it had been a particularly depressing season. Mid table mediocrity. It’s a strange thing, but in some ways I would rather have a relegation dog fight than sit in the middle of the table, filling my weekends with meaningless matches. You look up the table and long for the excitement and thrill of promotions and titles. Yet you also look down at the teams at the bottom. Yes, they would do anything to swap with you. But at least they get the passion that football fans crave for at the end of season big matches and full stadiums.

Crystal Palace, rarely for us, had none of that. Money problems had seen our better players slowly but surely desert us. The list was endless. Ben Watson, Clinton Morrison, Tom Soares, Andy Johnson, Dougie Freedman, Scott Sinclair, Jobi McAnuff, Emerson Boyce and others had all gone. Mainly to the Premiership. The manager seemed fed up, the fans were fed up and the players were dusting off their flip flops, ready for their summer break. It had been months since we’d had a worthwhile game and the season had long since petered out.

Naturally, my first idea was to head to Doncaster for the final away game of the season. I woke up late, missed the coach and that was that. Well, it should have been. But me being me, I was determined to go. I called Robbie, who was in charge of coach travel at Palace, to make some alternative arrangements. I managed to get to my Mum’s place in Egham from Twickenham (where I was at university) and frantically cycled to the A30 roundabout at Junction 13 of the M25 and met the coach.

I got on the coach and sat with my mates. Well, actually just behind them as that was the only space left on the packed coach, and off I went. I said hello to the person next to me. I didn’t recognise him and he had bad BO. Brilliant. I used the age-old match day conversation opener. “What do you reckon today then?”

Well that was it. He was off. Terry (although he told me I could call him ‘Tezza’ if I wished) gave me an in-depth analysis of our season, each player, the manager and he seemed to have a full report on the referee too. After telling me every statistic of the season from our win percentage in the rain to how many goals we had scored from the left hand side of the penalty area, he finally professed that we had a 47.3% chance of winning. I suggested it might be closer to 47.6% but he wasn’t having any of it.

He kept on wittering on about his love of Clint Hill and seemingly personal hatred of Julian Speroni – our goalkeeper and in my opinion, our best player. I bit my lip. Then he moved on to his expectations of us spending millions in the summer. I bit my lip harder – we were having financial difficulties and I expected more players to leave than join. Finally, he moved onto his dislike of some of our fans’ songs and that some weren’t 100% accurate. Apparently, not everyone in Preston lives on benefits as had been sung at one of the previous matches. My lip began to bleed.

After what seemed like a few months, we arrived at a service station and I crept away from him in a fashion not too dissimilar to how opposition strikers seem to manage to sneak away from Palace defenders at Selhurst Park i.e. without much difficulty. I then went to get a fry up with some of my friends. I had to analyse my life. A few of my close mates had stopped going to the away games. Palace were about as successful as a tortoise in a one hundred metre sprint, and about as exciting too. Yet I was still heading to South Yorkshire for what was likely to be a crap match, between two crap teams, with disinterested end-of-season crap support, in a crap town. At least Doncaster’s new ground insured that it wouldn’t be in a crap stadium too. The magic of live football...

Still, it wasn’t all bad – I had a fry up, the highlight of any away trip (or home game in many cases too). If it wasn’t for sausage, bacon, beans and a bit of

fried veg, I don’t think I would have the stomach for watching Palace (or the drinking that inevitably goes with it).

Anyway, back to analysing the worthwhile-ness of continuing with my unquestioning, blind support of Palace all over the country. I still had my season ticket and could do the decent away trips with my friends. Also, some of my closest friends were Brentford fans. Going with them allowed me to get the social side of an away trip, without the heart-ache and disappointment that Palace usually gave me. Then I looked around. One hundred or so Palace fans mulling around Watford Gap services. It was hardly Man United or Arsenal taking over Wembley Way or Milan City Centre with thousands of fans but it still gave me a sense of pride. We all had something in common. We were all here for the same reason. We were all as mad as each other. We all loved Palace. Even ‘Tezza’.

When we got to the ground, a few of us headed around the corner to Lakeside Village, a small shopping centre by the stadium. It seemed to be designed as if it was in the middle of Disneyland rather than a grim town in the north of England. Unfortunately, it was also the only shopping ‘village’ this side of 1900 where it was difficult to find a bloody ATM. Maybe the rumours were true that they don’t use cash ‘oop north’ and still trade farm animals as currency? Just as we were about to give up looking for cash and start hunting for poultry to trade, one of the coach regulars spotted one. Armed with crisp, freshly withdrawn notes, we headed to the Harvester Pub/Restaurant to indulge in some pre-match beer and banter.

After much heated discussion, none of us agreed on the team selection, formation or tactics, so we decided that we would leave that for our manager, Neil Warnock, to choose. Woe betide him if he gets it wrong. Any idiot/football fan knows what he should have done. We got into the ground, listened to the stewards as to where our seats were and then ignored the kind men in yellow and stood at the back. A group of about one hundred of us sang typically rude, irrelevant and sometimes not quite factually true songs (I hope Tezza didn’t hear) about our manager, the opposing fans, Ron Noades (our former chairman), Ron Noades' mother, past players, current players and our un-dying love of all things red’n’blue and South London.

Bizarrely for Palace, we actually played really well. We passed it about, we created chances, we defended well and it was a joy to watch. Somehow, we managed to hit the woodwork three times without scoring. Feeling positive, I walked down to the front, ready to dash out for a ‘cheeky’ pint at half time. Just as I got there, Doncaster scored. Bastards. I waited for the few seconds after the re-start before charging to the beer kiosk and ordered 6 pints of lager (not all for me I hasten to add).

During the second half, I felt much more at home. Palace were crap. The songs dried up (at least Tezza would be pleased on the coach home). The team reverted to long, hopeful and ultimately fruitless passes, while the manager made terrible subs. I knew in the pub that I could do a better job. Doncaster went on to win 2-0. The season was ending in the same depressive manner that it had been played all year.

After the game, I received a phone call from my Dad. He rang me after every game to touch base and see how we’d played. He would usually follow the scores online and fill me in with the ‘experts’ view on the match, while I ignored that and gave him my own ‘expert’ opinion.

I returned to the coach thoroughly pissed off and beginning to sober up. Tezza got on soon after me. “That ref was shit!”.

“I don’t think we can really blame him for the result,” I replied calmly.

“We should have had two penalties in the first half!” he snorted back, while spitting out some crumbs from a pork pie he was munching on.

I considered his view, briefly, and then decided that rather than pointing out that the first claim was a clear dive that had left our other players laughing and the second appeal was when our player had handled in their box, I would agree. He then blurted out “And why were our bloody fans singing that they’re a small team in Sheffield. Don’t they know that Doncaster is 22.3 miles from Sheffield?”

I pretended to be asleep. I had a long and uncomfortable journey, being squashed against the window.

A few of us headed back to Thornton Heath for a couple more pints and discussed the “highlights” of the season. It was difficult. However, what was even more difficult was deciding how to spend Saturdays over the summer. No football? What on earth would we do? We could waste our weekends by drinking all day in London, but without a bit of shit football to discuss in the middle of it, it just wouldn’t be the same. It was during this discussion, and after a fair amount of alcohol, that I made an important pledge. A vow. I was going to do what I had always wanted to do, but had so far eluded me by the odd game. I, James Howland, was going to go to every Crystal Palace league and cup game, home and away, during the 2009/2010 season, and nothing or no-one was going to stop me.

Jordon Mutch hahaha

Cheers for the wonga you mugs he's proper shite!!!!!

Should Bristol City put in a challenge?

Senegal have put a complaint in to FIFA about Sakho playing in the FA Cup last week when he was apparently injured and unable to be on international duty.

If FIFA uphold that then West Ham have fielded an illegible player in the game and should be removed from the competition.

Biggest delusional supporters

Who are the worst?

Feel free to add to the list but in my opinion the worst are.

1) Spurs: Think they have a god given right to win every match and god forbid if a so called smaller club has the nerve to beat them

2) Newcastle: Think they are one of the biggest clubs in the land. They may have big gates but have done nothing of note for ages.

3) Brighton: Well they are just Brighton aren't they, a figure of fun but somehow seem to think they belong in the elite of football

4) Liverpool: Nowhere in the delusional league of the above but still rank in there as last year proved. Rolled into Selhurst expecting a nice easy 5-6 goal win against little old Palace :)

Rumour: Jack Hunt to Rotherham United

Transfer Centre Live ‏@TransferCentreL 3s3 seconds ago

Rotherham United are set to sign Crystal Palace right-back Jack Hunt on loan until the end of the season.

What is the main Newcastle Utd forum?

All the ones I've looked at are barely used!

Strongest matchday squad

Playing a bit of football manager here, but what the hell.

Assuming Souare passes his medical, and jedinak and bolasie come back from international duty unscathed, what would be your team for Leicester? Pardews gonna have a hard headache picking the bench, let alone the starting lineup!

--------------------------Speroni-----------------------

Ward-----------Dann---------------Delaney---------Souare

--------------------Jedinak--------Mcarthur-----------------

Puncheon----------------Chamakh---------------------Gayle

---------------------------Sanogo---------------------------

Now here is where it gets hard...

Bench: Henessey,kelly,mutch,ledley,zaha,bolasie,murray

This means that Campbell,Shola, guediora, mariappa dont even make bench!? And i'm pretty sure that every player on that bench, aside from perhaps murray, could walk into every other bottom half side in the prem.

What a team we have.

Beer Festival Victim Bingo

...so I've been on hold for ages and was bored.

So I went through the Beer festival thread to take out all the key words, soundbytes, cliches and phrases by those who are moaning about £2.

To save people having to read through it all and to fast-track people's despair, below is a summary of the feedback:

-Rise

-over priced rip off

-unrealistic entry price

-Another 25% beats inflation by a long mile

-Nasty price hike

-Unnecessary

- It does not need to be £10

- pushing it

- won't sell out

- £15 on the day!

-a bit rum

- Is there a tax/duty advantage to charging a higher entrance fee and giving out more 'free' beer?

- inherently greedy

- why do they feel the need to hike the price every year?

- inflated ticket prices

- symbolic of a constant desire to simply squeeze that little bit more out of the fans we have seen time and time again from Parish

- twist the knife a little more each time

- massive 25% increase

- diappointingly premier league greedy

- now the entrance fee has increased again

- a money grabbing opportunity

- priced out of this years event

- Bit annoying that the price has almost doubled since I last went (2013) but as long as it doesn't keep rising I suppose it's a reasonable amount to charge

increase profits

- Increasing the costs lessons the enjoyment when you have the budget of most working class supporters.

- I am a man of principal, and am not as simply won over as a pint and a bout of awkward small talk with Mr Brew-It.

- this isn't about two quid, honestly mate

- Some of us are becoming increasingly tired of continually being milked like the cash cows we are.

- When I attend these events it's with a group of friends I've been going to Palace with for far longer than CPFC2010 have been in charge, and all of whom Id imagine are far better company.

- FWIW I have no great issue with mr Browett,

- dwarf-hurling festival

- but that doesn't detract from how a lot of fans feel.

- I think there is an ever increasing awareness (by football fans up and down the country) of the need for football clubs across the board... to put it bluntly, to stop taking the piss out of us

- My observations are not about two ******* quid!

- How a consumer is expected to know that in years before it was run at a loss or break even, is silly.

- My gripe was never about the £2 price increase,

- its only £2 its nothing to the club

- when is it going to stop?

Hi Rez music

As a vinyl fan i was the last guy I knew to get a CD player and didn't buy an iPod for ages but took the leap and burnt everything to cd and put them on my computer - stupidly at 128 or 192 - I learnt to burn at 320 as it sounds better

And belatedly have got into apple lossless

Cd is 16/44

Has anyone started using hd tracks for their 24/96 downloads? Noticed any improvement? I was happy enough with mp3s etc and the convenience and havnt even owned a proper CD player for last 7 years but I just bought a new one and dug out my neglected CDs after buying afew of these new blu ray audio discs 24/96 quadraphonia in 5.1 etc hfpureaudio.com and it got me back into appreciating sound quality again- sacds never made it big but sound very good and play in most Sony £100 blu ray players

I realise this might be niche but anyone else appreciate nice sound system? Can recommend a good source of high Rez files? Cheers

Mainly old recordings which is a shame, why aren't modern artists available in high def formats? Anyway dubnobasswithmyheadman is available ;-)

How do u guys play flac files? Do u convert to alac? How? Will they play on iPods at 24/96 once converted?

Pono lol

arsenal @ home - travel question

Hi fellow SmEagles!

I was hoping to watch my first Match of the Eagles playing in the prem on the 21st of feb. However, our flights from Oz have been rescheduled and now rather than arriving a day before we are landing 11:45 at Gatwick on the match day :/.

I'm hoping that we won't have delays, and we land on time and can make the game.

If we are delayed there may be 2 empty seats in the upper holmesdale :sob:

Anyway my question is about how likely it is that the game will be rescheduled by SKY and when is this decided?

Flying High - Issue Six - Out v Everton

Another issue, another new manager.

Obviously we had to put Pards on the cover as we celebrate the arrival of the Villa Park hero in Issue 6 of Flying High, which is out at the Everton game this Saturday. We will be selling the mag around the ground and various watering holes before the game so do come and find one of us. It's the usual £1.50 and you will get the below:

  • Half Term report - We've basically had three seasons in one already, we run down the season so far.

  • Twenty's Plenty - We back the initiative for cheaper tickets across the board at Palace games.

  • USA! USA! - With rumblings of a US takeover at the end of last year, would we swap local ownership for moneybags success?

  • Plan B - Warnock didn't have one, Pardew does. We look at how the squad can offer more than just the obvious.

  • Alllll, Super Al - We all agree Pards was the right man for the job post-Warnock.

  • 200 Not Out - Terence of RednBlueArmy reaches 200 games in a row at the Everton game and picks his top goals and games from the double century.

In addition we have our usual features of Brolin's Hoover (complete with some amazing Palace tat), The Sh*t List, Dave's Moans and more.

Figo for President?

Could this happen? Anyone's better than Blatter, right?

SJ's Book - Be Careful What You Wish For

I know there’s probably AATOT, but cant be arsed to look ..... I just completed SJ’s book, Be Careful What You Wish For ...... riveting …. brilliant.

I know it’s only one side of the story, but as a Palace fan I feel for Jordan.

He was never my favourite character but having watched 25 games a season under his tenure and, after reading this book, I now know what money grabbing self-important, self-opinionated conceited characters he had to contend with. ...... I am so indignant.

Do these clowns know how much money and how far I travelled to watch Palace? Meanwhile morally unacceptable people like Dowie ... Smith ..... Kember ......Bruce etc. were taking the mickey out of us supporters and more importantly, the chairman. Blatantly taking the piss.

But a brilliant book and a must for all Palace, and indeed football, fans, (that’s Chelsea, Man Utd, etc disregarded), .... and Simon you are well out of it.

I’m sorry you lost so much following a dream.

Discussion: Loan Target if Wilf signs Perm Deal

Okay guys, who do we think we will be loaning in if Wilf signs a perm deal for 3M?

Last time we did this was converting Punch to perm (great bit of business) and we brought in Tom Ince. Who will it be this time?

Look at it from Brighton's point of view

Raheem Sterling

What is all the fuss about. I think he is a very average player and I honestly believe that if he was at Palace he would struggle to make the starting 11

Stoke (a) - Sat March 21st - POTD

The above match will be POTD this season. The concept took a little break last year but for a number of reasons, we want to bring it back this year.

I'll admit it's not the ideal choice - the are drawbacks - but it's the best of the remaining fixtures IMO.

Usual rules applies - the more banners, balloons, colour and noise the better. One for the kids to enjoy.

The club has kindly agreed to put on free coaches to this match to assist travellers. Otherwise the cheapest train fares from Euston directly to Stoke are around £30. Virgin is pricier at £38 return, but you can get up to 25% discount if buying as part of a larger group. Lack of interest at £41 ph means CPST will not be running the 'special train' to this one, alas.

Post Jan Window 25

With Souare looking close to being a deal and Sanogo already here, what do people think our 25 man squad will shape up like on Feb 1st?

19 seem set in stone:

Speroni, Hennessey, Kettings

Ward, Kelly, Marriapah, Souare, Dann, Delaney, Hangeland

Jedinak, McArthur, Ledley

Puncheon, Zaha, Bolasie, Chamakh

Murray, Gayle

plus Sanogo as an under age player

That leaves Bannan, Thomas, Fryers (when back), Guedioura, McCarthy & Hunt of the non-loaned players chasing places along with new signings and also Campbell if the Mutch swap isn't real. Interesting to see who of that 7 make it.

What's your weekly Palace routine?

I was recruited to support Palace this summer by a pal/co-worker, who is a long time Palace fan from London. I've really been drawn in by this club. He warned me that supporting Palace requires a real dedication because when things go bad they usually go horribly bad and when things go good, well, you get a spell like we're on since AP's appointment.

My question is how do you all follow Palace to stay current on all the news and updates? I follow Palace, SP and many players on Twitter. Listen to the FYP and Holmesdale pods. Read the BBS and Holmesdale forums, which usually link to plenty of information. Through all that I generally pick up the key news of the week, but I feel like I'm usually late to the party on certain conversations or rumours. Are there other websites or programs I've totally missed? Also, which ones are trash or pro/anti Palace? I've picked up that some publications shouldn't be trusted, but I can't say I always remember which ones those are. Thanks for any suggestions. I know I could ask my pal too, but would love to hear from you all as well.

Scandinavian Eagles arriving in March.

Just wanted to let you guys know that 29 (so far) Scandinavian Eagles are coming home:love: for the QPR game in March. Our second trip (CPSS) to SE25 this season.

The Scandinavian branch of Crystal Palace (CPSS) has its own webpage (crystalpalace.no) and we also publish the oldest (still running) Palace fanzine Orneblikket, wich is published 3-4 times a year. I do see that many of you have noticed our facebookpage aswell. CPSS also participate in a annual supportercup in Oslo. Results not that great but always great to meet up and play in red`n blue! We also had visitors joining us from UK last summer.

So if you see axes and viking helmets fly in South Norwood pre match, don`t be scared its mostly Norwegians getting ready for match:p

Cheers!

Broadband\phone\TV - which supplier

Been trying to make a decision about who to use for ages and am still struggling, so thought I would ask for some recommendations.

I currently use Sky for broadband, phone and TV (just basic entertainment package), all of that, plus the sky protect cover costs about £60 per month. I'm looking for something cheaper, but from what I can gather my only two options are BT or TalkTalk. I can't get cable where I live.

I need a stable broadband link for when I'm working from home, which is something that worries me about Talk Talk. As far as TV goes I want to still be able to get Sky1, but I'm not too bothered about the other Sky channels.

So, can anyone offer any advice on what to go for? Or even if I should be looking in a completely different drection. I.E just get phone and broadband from somewhere, but then get TV from some kind of online streaming.

Thanks all :)

Betfair, crafty lot.

I had put £20 on the next Newcastle manager. After looking at a few betting company websites, they had in the bet title"Next Permanent Manager". After placing the bet I contacted them and they confirmed that if Newcastle named a temporary manager , the bet would still be open until the start of next season until they named a permanent manager.

After todays announcement, I checked my account and noticed that they had closed the bet saying I had lost. After an online chat and arguing what the operator before had told me earlier this month they have now reopened the bet.So if you had any money on it, check your account and make sure they have not closed the bet.

Men need nights out with the lads

Scientists have proved that every man needs a good night out with his friends.

According to the research, male bonding is more likely to lower a man's stress levels than a night out with his partner, or time spent with the family.

The study, by scientists from Germany's University of Gottingen, found males suffer less anxiety when out in a group.

Scientists studied groups of Barbary macaques, a type of ape which exhibits human-like social behaviour.

Levels of male stress hormone soared when male macaques were with their partner or other family members. But when they were in a group of other males, they were more much more relaxed.

Christopher Young, of the university's Primate Social Evolution Group, told the Telegraph: "If male primates live in multimale groups they usually fight fiercely over access to females, but males can develop friendly relationships with a few group mates.

2015 Topps/Merlin Premier League Stickers

Anyone collecting these and fancy doing some swapping?

Just got Bolasie and Zaha next to one another in the same packet. Top work, semi-automated packing machine.

Need around 140-odd to complete the book now. Will post a list of doubles on here if there's any interest.

4th round is going on forever

Used to be all Saturday 3pm kick offs.

We're now on to Friday to Mondays and then the replays.

Seeing some of the crowds,I think Blackburn were about 5/6 thousand cant be about money can it ?

Its now generally accepted Palace have more fans than Brighton

We've been saying for years that Brighton's new 'support' from 2012 are just plastics from other clubs. Apart from WCP on NSC everyone could see that we've had much bigger crowds than them for decades and you can't just magic 20K out of thin air.

Now its become clear that a massive chunk of their new support do not exclusively support Brighton (source: North Stand Chat) what do we think thats going to do to the poor souls that whinge on about attendances as if they are important :D

I suppose it might make them feel better that we still don't care about attendances :D

(It must be painful for their hardy band of proper fans seeing whats been going on over the last few years. If only they'd stopped having ago at all the other clubs ;))

Returning to the UK as an expat

dimanche 25 janvier 2015

Hi everyone. I just wanted to gather the thoughts of anyone who has returned to the UK having lived abroad. I've been in aus for the last 8 years but now contemplating bringing my young family back to London. We have an 11 month old currently. I'd particularly be interested in hearing from anyone who has recently done this. Also is this the right time to do it or wait until we've had all our kids. The lifestyle is indeed great out here but the opportunity to be back with family and back in UK and London is really appealing to me at the moment.

Thinking about going to this - away at 1pm on Tuesday 27 Jan. Does anybody know where Brentford play these games? - I doubt it's Griffin Park.

Wayne Andrews, Rudi Hedman, John Jackson - Cult Heroes. Who is yours?

Next Saturday, the various shows on Palace Radio are going to have a theme of Cult Heroes. We've already arranged for Wayne Andrews, Rudi Hedman and John Jackson to be guests, and hope to have many others too.

We'd love to hear of your nominations, and also of your favourite recollections of such players that gave them "cult" status. Even if we don't get interviews with all those nominated, we'll enjoy discussing them in the various shows.

A number have already been suggested via Twitter, and most of these are included in the Poll - which will follow when I've typed them all out.

But let's have your suggestions please, and your recollections

Update on Premier League ticket price meeting

On Wednesday 14 January 2015 members of the HF met with Richard Scudamore (Chief Executive, Premier League), Cathy Long (Head of Supporter Services) and Stephen Browett (Palace Co-Chairman). The meeting focused on the issue of match ticket prices and followed on from our protest outside Premier League HQ on Saturday 20 December. We find it important to share a brief summary of this meeting and show a level of transparency to all football supporters regarding the topic of ticket prices. This is now being seriously looked at by people at the top of the Premier League pyramid as a result of supporter action.

The Premier League is a private company owned by 20 shareholders (the Chairmen of the Premier League clubs). These shareholders meet at regular intervals during the season to discuss the proposal and implementation of new rules. No new rule, such as cheaper match tickets, will be accepted unless 14 clubs vote in favour. This is why it is crucial that supporters of every club put pressure on their respective Chairmen before the next shareholder meeting.

One of the main topics of our lengthy meeting focussed on the current £200K fund that has recently been set aside by each club and is intended to be used "to make games more affordable for away fans". While some may say this is a very small step in the right direction, we made it clear to Scudamore and everybody else at the meeting that we found this small sum of money to be an insult to supporters. We discussed at length our idea to bring this figure up to a minimum of £1million per club per season so that the money could actually make a substantial difference in lowering ticket prices. We also stressed the importance of the direction in which this money would be spent, i.e. on bringing the costs of match tickets down, and to avoid some of the current spending on trivial matters such as hot dog vouchers.

We also discussed the upcoming 2016-19 Premier League TV deal that is rumoured to be worth in excess of £7billion in total, a potentially massive increase on the current £5.9billion deal. Our proposal is that 1% of the total TV deal should be transferred to a supporter fund that would be distributed equally between each club, similar to the current £200K fund, to reduce and subsidise the cost of match tickets. When calculated, the figures showed that this sum of money would reduce the average Premier League away match ticket by more than 50% for every travelling supporter for every away game, an idea so beneficial to supporters that it's impossible to ignore.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Scudamore made it clear that he could not make any specific promises at that moment in time. However, the promise we did get was that the issue of ticket prices would be on the agenda at the February shareholders meeting. We are under no illusion that the prospect of getting 14 Chairmen to vote in favour of lowering ticket prices will be an easy accomplishment; but we feel positive that the ticket price issue is gaining momentum and it is becoming harder for Chairmen to carry on ripping off supporters and for the league to allow them to do so. Judging by the contact we have had from various supporter groups across the league, we are confident that if future protests are needed there will be action from a united front.

Wi Fi at Selhurst

I know that this was discussed on questions to CPFC 2010 a while back, but watching that team from the South Coast losing this afternoon I couldn't help seeing that they were advertising a Brighton App that you could download using the "free" Wi Fi at the Stadium.

I assume it is expensive to install etc, but surely with our funds we could afford this,or is it more of a technical issue.

Anyone know if it could be done or is it money.

13-14 season review

Does anyone know where I can find last years season review? Not on club shop website, iTunes, ebay etc...

Match Updates: Brighton v Plucky Little Arsenal match thread

I know NSC do these threads all the time and it comes back to bite them but come on its Brighton and these sorts of enjoyable afternoons don't come round too often.:)

Great chance for Arsenal fans to experience a real atmosphere in a big stadium for once. Depends on whether the Arsenal players can cope with the atmosphere which is bound to be white hot, but if they can last the first 20 mins they could have a good chance ? It has been the weekend of upsets after all

Suggestion: Dele Alli

So I'm doing what I generally don't agree with here, but watching Goals on Sunday I was struck by his athleticism and knack for sending defenders the wrong way. He's a 6ft2 attacking midfielder at MK Dons, and he's 18 years old. They showed a few of his goals (and I'm aware of what a decent highlight reel can do for an average player), but the way he goes forward, he looks somewhat like Yaya Toure.

He's attracting attention from a few big teams, but I've seen little by way of concrete interest - I would love to see us snap him up but I don't know what sort of fee he would realistically command.

Have Brighton always been a laughing stock?

I started going to Palace in 1994 as a six year old. Until October 2002 I didn't even know that Brighton were our rivals and even then the gap couldn't have been bigger. Since then they've been permanently in our shadow, despite a couple of years back when it looked like that may change. But no, they managed to help us restore the natural order of things.

This morning I watched FA Cup rewind and they mentioned the fact that in the seventies, the mighty seagulls managed to lose at home to part time Leatherhead. So I come back to my question:

Have Brighton always been a laughing stock?

Is There EVER a Time When We Want Brighton To Win?

Like today vs Arsenal.....would like them in the Final! :p

Discussion: Life after Speroni

No doubt that Jules will go down in Palace folklore as one of our best keepers but it looks like his time at Palace might be up soon.

Hennessey looks like a capable keeper with very good distribution skills, but doesn't stand out as an exceptional keeper so, assuming Speroni does leave this summer, who would you like Palace to realistically sign?

Personally I'd go for David Marshall but I guess John Ruddy will be in the mix and I thought Adam Bogdan looked quality for Bolton yesterday. Anyone else?

Interesting week or so ahead me thinks.

Match Updates: Sunday 25th FA Cup 4th Round

All three games today could see upsets.

Bristol City v West Ham

High flying Bristol City take on a slightly stuttering Hammers. Emmanuel-Thomas is a player to watch in this game

Aston Villa v Bournemouth

Free falling, Low scoring Villa take on attractive playing, free scoring Bournemouth.

Brighton v Arsenal

Brighton seem to have stopped the rot and are getting some form back, against Arsenal who are so inconsistent that beating Man City one week and losing to Brighton the next wouldn't surprise anyone.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Everton (home)

--------------Speroni---------------

Ward---Dann-------Delaney---Kelly

---------------Ledley----------------

Zaha--Puncheon---Chamakh--Gayle

---------------Sanogo----------------

Subs:

Hennessey

Hangeland

Mariappa

Mcarthur

Bannan

Murray

Campbell

I understand some might think it's a bit too attacking but we are at home after winning 4 in a row. So why not? None of Gayle, Puncheon (for Burnley performance) or Zaha and Chamakh (for Saints performance) deserve to be left out. This is only way to fit them all in.

Wingers

This is typically the type of thread that I loathe, but here I am starting it. Working under the assumption that Chamakh will play in the hole, with either Sanogo or a new signing up top, who would be your two choices to start on the wing. You can really make a compelling argument for any combination.

Puncheon? Zaha? Bolasie? Gayle?

Night Will Fall

A Must-See.

Fair play to C4 for not putting adverts in this.

Chamakh's Hair

Not being 100% serious and I love the guy but surely it has to go? Should we get a petition going to get it removed?

It's become a bit distracting for me

4 wins on the spin . Is this the best start ever for a new Palace manager ?

For the statto's out there. I'm thinking it could be ?

Possibly the kiss of death, but Alan Pardew, manager of the month?

Got to be hasn't he, who else is there ?

Super Alan Pardew

[RANT]Now I know a lot of people, especially those who sing probably weren't on the terraces of the early 90s, however Pardew had a song, and it would be nice to get it right.

Much like the absolute twats who need a shoeing when they sing Ian Wright Wright Wright etc etc people should be able to get a song right.....

AAAALLLL Super Al

AAAALLLL Super Al

AAAALLLL Super Al

Super Alan Pardew.

No it doesn't scan as well, no it might not be the way every other club sings a generic song but that is the ******* point, it is his song, it is unique so get it right [/RANT]

GOALS GOALS GOALS ....

GOALS GOALS GOALS ....

Under Pulis, we mastered the art of the 1-0, effective but dull as sh*t.

We've now proved we can beat teams, even if we go behind and concede first.

12 goals in 4 games for Pardew speaks volumes about our new attacking policy.

WE'VE NOW SCORED MORE GOALS IN THE LAST 4 THAN ASTON VILLA HAVE IN THEIR WHOLE SEASON!!! :D

Goal of the season?

Just seen the goal! ... surely our 3rd against Southampton in the FA Cup has to be our best goal of the season so far?

Jedi's free kick against Liverpool will probably be the best league goal, but this is definitely our best team goal and I doubt we'll get a better one all season!

What play from Zaha, Ward and Chamakh!!!

FA cup

Good chance to win it this year !!!!

Discussion: Don't sign anyone.Super Al leave well alone

This team is playing to well to risk disruption by bringing in new faces half way through season. What a boost to everyone in the squad if super Al tells them they are that good he is signing no one.

Don't think we are short in any position ,maybe left back , but the switch with Kelly and Ward seems to have worked.

Remember we still have Yannick and Jedinak to some how fit in this team. Thats over £20 million worth of talent coming back at the end of the month.

Save the money for the summer and sign real quality.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Southampton (away) FA Cup

Poll to follow. Can't wait to read the reviews :)

Right then. Let's go and ******* win this thing.

Chelsea, Man City, Spudz - all gone. I want to see a proper, genuine and sincere crack at this cup. I want to win it. And I think we can.

Super Al has already signalled his intentions with two strong line-ups. With 1990 at the forefront of his mind (how could it not be?), he'll be wanting it to.

I want to see South London lit up with red and blue again, I want to see 5 year old kids riding around with red and blue balloons on their bike without quite knowing why, I want to see the hand crafted 'good luck Palace' banners going up in the local newsagents.

Let's do this. Let's go and win this ******* thing. All aboard clap your hands.

:lux:

Are Swansea Safe?

At present, Swansea have 30 points. Normally at this stage I would say that this would probably be enough to see them safe.

But, they are only 3 points ahead of Newcastle, who people do reckon may be dragged into it, they have sold their star player, have an inexperienced manager and are missing another key player for a short period also.

Is the 3 points extra they have at the moment enough for people to think they are safe over Newcastle, or could they be the team which fold in the new year and drop like a stone?

Edit - meant for World of Football.

Second edit - Siggurdson just sent off, so will be missing him soon as well!
