Cheap trains aren't exactly available for the way up but for the way back they certainly are! Just booked mine now and the route I have selected for going up is via Sunderland on Grand Central trains. £34 from London + single to Newcastle. 08:11 departure.
On the way back will be going Newcastle to London via Leeds. £15! 18:04 to Leeds then 20:05 back to London from Leeds.
