Concussions and Football

Watching the World Cup Finals, I was amazed how many clear cases of concussions their were and players being allowed to stay in the game. Pereira, Mascherano and Kramer should have been subbed right away. Martins Indi was lucky, I guess, in that he looked in really bad shape and forced Holland to substitute him.

And the game's referee Rizzoli has now disclosed the nature of a bizarre conversation that led Kramer to be replaced by Andre Schurrle. Rizzoli told Gazzetta dello Sport: "Shortly after the blow suffered by Garay, Kramer came to me and asked: 'Ref, is this the final?' "I thought he was joking, he repeated the question and said: 'I need to know if this is really the final.' "At my 'yes', amazed, he concluded: 'Thanks, it was important to know'. I advised [Bastian] Schweinsteiger and they replaced Kramer."

After years of research here in the US, they've connected repeated brain injury with ALS and Alzheimer's disease. And they've found that the worst damage comes from repeated injury while concussed. Letting those guys back in the game could have been (could still be) detrimental to these guys in the long term. Hugo Lloris was knocked out for a couple of minutes last season and they let him stay in the game.
