Transfer window closes soon. Are you happy?

Wilf: gone
Luka: gone
JMac: gone
Guaita: throwing a strop

Lerma: IN
Franca: IN

Wasn’t sure whether this was GPD or Transfer Hotline, but after a little deliberation plumped for the former in order to avoid the wrath of TAK, our overly officious and longest serving mod - this could have ended up either closed as a thread or in Chit Chat Gold within 30 mins.

So, transfer window closes in 2 days at the time of writing. All essential transfers done as they would need a proper pre season and we are already 3 games into the new season. Most previous windows also show we do our best business in the first half of the window in any case. Are you happy?

Let’s look at the positives. Olise is staying for another season, and Doucoure, Guehi, Andersen and Eze are still here too. Lerma on a free looks like a terrific signing. Excellent value. Franca is apparently an excellent prospect although he is currently injured, and a bit raw, and also a 19 year old kid from Brazil so we shouldn’t expect too much from him to begin with.

Then the negatives. Other than Lerma there are no first team ready players that have come in. No new right back, no Zaha replacement ready to hit the ground running. Approx 1000 appearances have departed.

It depends on what your aspirations for us are this season. The new me is more
pragmatic. I don’t expect us to improve on that glorious 2021 window for at least 4 years because history tells us we have maybe 1 good window in 10, if “good” is defined as bringing in multiple first XI players. So I think it has been a fabulous window if we are honest with ourselves. Yes, we haven’t replaced Wilf with a first team player ready to have a pre-season, fully acclimatised to the PL and hit the ground running. But we have brought in an extra DM so we can have a double shield in front of the back 4. Strong rumours of a new goalkeeper at the time of writing too. We shouldn’t concede many with our low block, Roy’s speciality.

The old me would be pissed off because we have regressed in terms of attacking play. But does it matter? We should stay up, I’m expecting quite a few clean sheets. And Burnley, Sheffield Utd and Luton don’t look equipped for this league. Plus there’s Everton and a few others. I think we can stay up relatively comfortably, so another year of PL football and a step closer to the new stand being built and the academy players like JRS being ready. I think we can finish 16th. COYP.
