Good evening guys. I've been a BBS reader for over 13 years and contribute the occasional reply. I wanted to see if I can get some help from the BBS. Mods please remove if I'm not allowed to do this.
I moved from the UK to the US in 1997 after two years as a Palace season ticketholder. I got to experience the worst feeling in person when Claridge shinned past Martyn. A year later I was hugging my sister at Wembley when Hopkin curled "one".
I currently live in rural Alabama. I took a sizable pay cut from my insurance job in March for an opportunity to positively affect my local community. A community that has struggled for a long time. I live in one of the poorest counties in Alabama and accepted a job at a start up public charter school as the Director of Operations. In our town, white children have historically attended private schools or attended schools outside the county whereas black children attended the public schools. Our school wanted to be a catalyst for change and opened in August of this year with a diverse student population of different racial and socio economic backgrounds. We do not receive any local funding but have been awarded some state and federal grants. As a small school of 168 students and planning to grow, we have faced many challenges trying to open a school during a pandemic. We purchased a prior school building in desperate need of some TLC and used a lot of the grant money to get the building up to life safety and fire codes.
As we strive to make a difference in each students life and provide equal educational opportunities not histroically afforded in our county, we also ask for help from our community and beyond. Kids in our area do not have local clubs to join or facilities to play sports. We are asking for donations to help start our basketball, football (soccer), and volleyball programs. Programs we can open up to the community to provide youth with a place to learn and grow.
The Eagles family has always been a close knit group whether evidenced in "When Eagles Dare" or from my own experiences meeting some of you in Richmond, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and Harrisburg. I ask that if any if you can spare a quid or 5 or 10 to please do so. I understand that none of you probably have ties to my community and you may live in a similar community yourself. All I ask is that if you can afford to give, the small city of Marion, Alabama in Perry County and our school Breakthrough Charter School will be greatly appreciative.
If interested in more information about our school, please feel free to ask or you may visit our website at To view the link you have to Register or Login or find us on Facebook/Twitter. Donations are accepted at To view the link you have to Register or Login
