Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Tyrick Mitchell discussion

Couldn't see an active thread on Mitchell so thought I would start one to discuss him.

There is a new article by Woosie on the Atheltic about him.

Will be interesting to see if he does start the season in our starting line-up while PVA recovers and to see how he develops this season.

I thought he was a bit timid in terms of his attacking play against Charlton and didn't forward as near as I would like, especially in a game we were dominating possession (I think Ward was offering more offensively).

However he produced an excellent piece of defending to rescue a situation when Charlton had got in behind us.

Suggested Team and Formation For: This Season

let's assume everyone's fit and Zaha stays

VG

Ferguson
Tomkins
Cahill
PVA

Mccarthur
Kouyate
Gallagher

Zaha
Ayew
Eze

Subs: Hennessey, Kelly, Sakho, Luka, Mccarthy, Townsend, Schlupp

reverses: Ward, Jairo, Henderson, Dann, Wickham, Mitchell, Pierrick

Hopefully never play: Benteke

NOT BAD, but another striker needed!!!!!

Imagine being a Palace fan!

samedi 29 août 2020

Seriously! You got to be the wrong shade of special to even entertain the idea?!

Kaveh - Sky muppet

Kaveh has decided to go all in on HLTCO on Twitter (no idea how to post links). Interesting call by him as he is more off the mark than Geoff Thomas’ effort at Wembley for England.

Suspect his bosses will be asking questions.

Emmerson Boyce has come out of retirement

10:37
THE BOYCE ARE BACK IN TOWN

Here's a bit of a blast from the past for you. 2013 FA Cup winner Emmerson Boyce has come out of retirement to join North West Counties Football League side Ashton Town.

Boyce spent nine years at Wigan before retiring in 2016 - only to now re-emerge at the ripe old age of 40.

Josh Harris

Josh Harris an adviser to Trump.

I knew former chair Steve Brownett was a Brexit campaign funder, Steve Parish a keen Brexiter, at least in the past, but our part owner from American a Donald Trump adviser? I did not know this.

Live Com and Updates: Charlton 2PM

Can't see a thread. I'm looking forward to this. Worked well on TV browser last time.

Leeds- media bias

Why are Leeds Utd transfers getting announced on BBC Radio news bulletins this morning? They seem to be a media love child for some reason. Sky running programs about Bielsa and special editions of Premier League World. Don't recall say, Villa getting this level of attention when they were promoted and they have an equally succesful and colourful history. Even Newscastle didn't get this level of interest.

10/10 TV show episodes.

Film thread inspired.

Hush - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, demons steal the voices of everyone in town so it has no dialogue, the actors work their socks off to move the plot along.

The Luck of the Fryrish - Futurama, just beats Jurassic Bark for a comic tear jerker with flashbacks showing Fry's family dealing with his disappearance.

The Simpsons monorail episode, all the more impressive as it was written by one person (Conan O'Brien) I believe.

Lost - The Pilot, it starts just after the plane crash and establishes around 15 characters and the weirdness of the island really well and got a lot of people hooked (shame about later).

Match Updates: Aug 29/30

A classic weekend of football. I can hardly breathe with anticipation.

Community Shield: Arsenal v Liverpool. 4:30. BT Sport

Plus some classic Scottish Premier games where surely Livingston v Ross County has the potential of being named game of the season already.

EFL action too with Preston taking on Mansfield.

Sit back and enjoy.

Plans for Fox News style channel in the UK

Sad day if this type of thing happens under the banner of mainstream news, I remember Cameron floating the idea of removing the impartiality requirement for broadcast news in the coalition days to cozy up to Murdoch.

Repair of a scratch in car paintwork

Anyone have experience with repairing a scratch in a car’s paintwork that is small but deep enough to have got below the clear-coat?

I have one that about 25 to 30 mm long left, which on a dark grey vehicle is really noticeable.

I took it to one place and they wanted $650 to repair it… talked about having to respray the entire panel… forget that!

I took it and got the vehicle detailed, and they got all the trailing marks out, but the 25 to 30 mm “white” scratch is still there.

Googling comes up with some products, that are a) basically touch-up paints, and b) very expensive and c) do it yourself (which I’m OK with if they work). I’m not sure why body shops don’t offer this service… I guess the $650 quoted above is why!

Where’s Dean Childs when you need him???

5 subs this season still a possibility

Really hope the rest of us don't get pushed around and give in to the bully boys.

Got to wonder if by bringing it back now the big boys might quietly put pressure on the other clubs 'in the interest of keeping good relationships' in order to loan/ be sold players.

Suggestion: Daniel James- Loan

If Fraser doesn't happen I think he would be an excellent loan acquisition. He doesn't look to be in favour at Man United, young, rapid and we could give him some game time. If he does well it's not unrealistic that we could sign him permanently either. I think he's a top talent, needs a run of games.

Your 5 topping selection

Any 5 different genres, best song;

Reggae = Ganja Smuggling - Eek a Mouse
Disco = Cuba - Gibson Bros
Rap = Lose Yourself - Eminem
Rock = Wont Get Fooled Again - The Who
Electronica = 8 Ball - Underworld

Crystal Ball: Do we need Zaha?

personally I think not,

Guiata (Hennessey)
Ferguson (Ward)
Cahill (Dann)
Tomkins (Kelly)
PVA (Mitchell)

Mcarthur (Mcarthy)
Luka (Jairo)
Kouyate (Meyer)

Ayew (Townsend)
Schlupp (Pierrick)
Eze (Wickham)

and thats not even including Sakho, Benteke both of whom should be shipped out imo. For me it's a very very capable Premier League squad, and I can't help but feel that the issue is Hodgson and his outdated tactics rather than the squad, which I feel any capable manager should be able to keep up in the Premier League with ease, and with a much more exciting brand of football. And who knows if Fraser and this striker bloke come in, I think we could be in for an exciting season providing either Hodgson breaks the habit of a lifetime and actually plays with a somewhat attacking mindset, or Parish bites the bullet early doors and gets rid!

Obviously ideal world Zaha bucks his ideas up, commits to the club and we all live happily ever after, but I'd far rather we got rid, for whatever price, than had him stinking out the place all year. This squad without Zaha is easily good enough, just need a manager that can get the best out of them!

Discussion: Bryan Mbuemo

We all know about the interest in Brentford's Watkins and Benrahma from many clubs, so considering Bryan Mbuemo also had a very good season for them I'm quite surprised to only just see supposed interest in him from Leicester. French under 21 forward who scored 16 goals for them last season. Could be a good option and probably a sensible price too.

Unusual places bumping into Palace players

I'm hoping there are some cracking stories out there.

I have one myself, which I'll reveal at some point.

Rumour: Sorloth

Not sure how reliable but could be interesting

Peanut butter ?

Should only go on hot toast or crumpets and always be the crunchy version!

£5 to watch Charlton

Are you taking the p!ss?

Crystal Ball: When will Roy play a new signing

Perhaps a valid discussion: do we think Roy will break his painstaking regime of insisting new players spend 3 months having all their character, flair and spontaneity vanquished before blooding them with a series of glorious 88th minute substitute opportunities, in which they have the mouth watering task of helping us defend a 0-1 loss.

Is Roy going to change this coming season? Was he making us play incredibly dull, turgid football because he lacked the players? If he gets the players, will we stop being one of the lowest scoring teams in the league, especially at home where our record is now unarguably pathetic for goals from open play - relegation levels for years now.

19/20
15 goals at home in 19 games (lowest in the league, only Norwich scored <20)

18/19
19 goals at home in 19 games (join 2nd from bottom on goals scored)

nb. before anyone posts it, you can't cancel out this discussion by saying "keeps us in the top flight though" - as a season ticket holder, it's absolutely valid to be fed up with the dross at home.

Palace’s first ever Football League match - 28th August 1920.

jeudi 27 août 2020

Today marks quite an important landmark in the history of our club and indeed the Football League.

Up until 1920, Palace had spent the majority of their 15 years playing in the Southern League - apart from the 1st World War years between 1915-18. Other London clubs, had entered the Football League a little earlier than Palace, at the time of our foundation in 1905, the Football League was mainly the preserve of Northern and Midland clubs, only Arsenal in 1893 and Luton (very briefly between 1897-1900) had joined the Football League and it took Arsenal a full 10 seasons to reach the First Division in 1904 - clubs such as Chelsea, Orient, Fulham and Spurs only joined the Football League after Palace were formed in 1905.

Palace were among the majority of Southern League clubs to form the new Football League Third Division in 1920 - the Northern clubs did not form the Northern Section until 1921 - so when Palace won the title in 1921, we became the first ever winners of Division Three.

Of course, in true Palace style, the first match ended in defeat, away to Merthyr Town in South Wales. Merthyr only lasted till 1930 in the FL and got voted out in favour of another short lived club called Thames who played at West Ham greyhound track and wore red and blue (1930/33).

It was quite an auspicious day back in 1920 and here is a newspaper clip from the

Rule Britannia/Land of Hope and Glory

Surprised no one has commented on this to date.

I'm aware of both sides of the argument but to be honest i couldn't be bothered about whether they sing it or not at the last night of the proms.

I'm as patriotic as the next person but isn't it just a load of stuck up toffs waving plastic flags, bobbing up and down?

So it is looking like all games will be on TV until fans are permitted back in stadiums.

I'm sure more details will be announced soon.

Bargain or balls up?

Today I bought something on the internet which was advertised as being in a summer sale. This was a bona fide website. The price however was ludicrously low. I have an order confirmation and the amount is pending in my bank account.

Should this not turn out be a hell of a bargain, but a mistake by a webmonkey with the pricing, does anybody know what my legal position is should they decide that it was a mistake?

Ta.

Tour De France 2020 (29/08/20-20/09/20)

An interesting TDF in store for us all this year for obvious reasons.

The Jumbo-Visma team looks very strong on paper. Ineos also have a strong team despite leaving out Froome and Thomas.
Will it simply be Bernal v Roglic? Or will Carapaz and Dumoulin also have their say? There are plenty of other serious contenders too.
It's a very lumpy parcours this year with not a lot of stages for the sprinters.

And let's not forget that there is a Velogames competition up and running called "Great Big Bike Game XXII" The deadline for submitting a team is Saturday 29th August 13:45 CEST!

Do any of you watch this? With all the dross that is on TV for me this is a real real jem of a programme. I love that it is about sentimental and not monetary value....to see the faces and the emotion of some of the people when they are reunited with their items is just wonderful. The craftsmanship from these guys is just amazing.

brighton v Chelsea fan test the perfect choice

Brighton v Chelsea has been picked as a fan test event

2500 fans will be allowed to attend the event . Brighton was targeted for this test as the perfect fit. A spokesman said , “we picked Brighton to minimise the risk as most of their fans leave after 70 Minutes of their matches. This will help keep the risk of infection down “.

It was also felt that there would be a good mix of fans as many Brighton season ticket holders actually support other clubs including Chelsea.

A Brighton spokesman said “ we are well prepared, we were used to small crowds as we failed to fill the Withdean . Also the atmosphere will be no different from a normal home game . Also if there is any trouble we are confident that the Sussex police will help “

A Sussex Police spokesman said “We expect any trouble at this game to be caused by Palace fans and we will deal with expected guns knives and bombs appropriately . We will make a further statement on the weapons we find a few days before the game “

Path built above DPC

Ok so I’m turning to the BBS for assistance.

My elderly neighbour who lives on her own has asked me for help. Her neighbours have been building an extension to their house and in the process have built a concrete path that sits approx 6 inches above her DPC.

The boundary line to their property is according to the block plan her house wall.

We have contacted the local council who granted the planning permission but they aren’t interested as they say the building works are being signed off by a private company and passed their details on. After contacting the private company they aren’t interested either saying they only look at the building works on plan but not the pathway.

She unfortunately doesn’t have legal cover with her home insurances.

We had a damp company come over on Monday to check the property and found it free from damp which is expected at only built mid eighties.
The report from them has just come through stating

‘Further to your recent request, our Surveyor ***** inspected the flank wall externally of the above property on 25th August 2020 and noted that the new path has been laid at a higher level and is bridging the damp proof course.
We recommend therefore that the height of the path is reduced to 150mm below the damp proof course.’

We are planning to speak to the owner tomorrow showing the report and requesting the works are done immediately. If this fails and doesn’t get done what are my next options?

I’ve attached the block plan elderly lady lives at 27 and the works are going on at 28.

Nathan Ferguson

mardi 25 août 2020

Interesting comments by RH on Nathan Ferguson . Has not done any real training with the squad , still to do any physical training as in tackling , twisting and turning . Waiting for Medical team to say when they are confident he can join in training but do not want to risk damaging knee . My take was that it will be quite a while before we see him in first team .

Discussion: Messi

Ok, Messi wants to leave Barca.

One way to get him to come to Palace (short of rohypnol & kidnap)...

Get him to buy Blitzer and Harris’ stake and we kill two birds with one stone ! :lux::lux::lux: He can help turn us into a global brand and profit from his equity ownership of the club.

We can name the new stand after him.

Has he not heard we are the sleeping giant of South London with a catchment area of 1 million fans yada yada yada...:p

Apparently told Barcelona he wants to go.

Trial is underway in Mykonos.

Quite an interesting account, claims and counter claims happening. Pretty crazy stuff with the defendants claiming Maguire's sister was injected with something by two 'Albanian men' and fainted immediately. Also claiming the police kicked Harry in the leg saying, "Your career is over."

The prosecution are alledging that Maguire said to the Greek police, "Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go."

An absolute circus of wanker proportions.

Barry Pierce RIP

I have just been informed that sadly Barry Pierce passed away earlier this month, not sure about the actual date but he would have been 86 on the 13th.

Barry signed for Palace in August 1955 from Truro City (he was born in Liverpool) and made 93 appearances (27 goals) over the next four seasons then moved on to Millwall in May 1959.

Usually found at Inside Right position he also scored a hat-trick against Brentford in a FA Cup tie in December 1956

He later played for York City and Exeter City.

Thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

I can’t remember (someone will know) if he played for warnock whilst he was at palace but ...
SANOGO SET FOR MIDDLESBROUGH MOVE

Former Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo is close to joining Middlesbrough.

The 27-year-old is a free agent after leaving Toulouse last month.

Sanogo visited the Middlesbrough training ground last week and would become Neil Warnock’s second signing, following defender Grant Hall.

Warnock missed out on Kieffer Moore, who signed for Cardiff instead - but is hoping to tie up a deal for Sanogo instead.

1990/91 season - game by game

I thought it might be a bit of fun for old farts like to me to take an extended walk down memory lane and reminisce about the seminal 1990/91 season game by game. Alternatively this could die on its arse if no-one is interested but let’s see. The theory is that I will post up a brief summary of each game a day or two before the 30th anniversary date (hard to believe it’s all 30 years ago), and see what reminiscences people have.

Brief context – this was easily the most successful season in the club’s history with a comfortable third place finish and we were in with a realistic shout of winning the bloody thing until a tonking at the hands of eventual champions Arsenal in late February (spoiler alert). We also won the ZDS Trophy, admittedly something of a Mickey Mouse competition but still fantastic to see us winning at Wembley a year after the FA Cup final heartbreak. 1990/91 was certainly the ‘Zenith’ for this team which Steve Coppell had assembled, a collection of cast-offs and lower league bargains alongide a few astute bigger money signings to strengthen in key areas. From memory, we had brought in three players over the summer. John Humphrey came in at right back to replace the popular John Pemberton, who was shunted off to Sheffield United. Eric Young (or ‘Eric Old’ as some Palace fans labelled the 30 year old) arrived to partner his old Wimbledon mate Andy Thorn in the heart of the defence. And another Wimbledon old boy Glyn Hodges was signed to add some creative flair (or so we thought).

From a personal perspective I had turned 18 in the few days between the FA Cup final first game and replay, and after having spent the early part of the summer immersing myself in Italia 90 and the Madchester vibe, I started my first proper job at the beginning of August in the AMP building adjacent to East Croydon station. So the world was my oyster with proper money in my pocket for the first time.

On we go to the first game then, which was on 25 August 1990 away to Luton Town. Again hard to believe now, but Luton were considered a reasonably established top flight outfit then, having gained promotion under David Pleat in the early 80s and stayed put. They’d even won the League Cup in 1988. The game was played in front of a pathetic crowd of 9,583, caused by the ban on away fans which Luton’s extremist right-winger chairman David Evans had imposed. A number of Palace fans did thought infiltrate the stadium, as could be seen when the goals were shown on TV.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, our goal coming from debutant Eric Young (from memory, a towering header from a corner??). This was deemed a satisfactory result in our opening game as we looked to build on our 15th place finish (out of 22) in the previous season.

Over to you – what memories of this game, and what were your thoughts and feelings as the new season got underway?

Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

The contestants will be seeded for the group draw (based on overall performances in BM competitions).

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.

Remember fair play. Duplicating you’re opponents bets are not allowed.

The bets must be possible to do in real life.

High Score - Netflix Games Series

I'm part way into a new Netflix documentary series called, "High Score" which tracks the arcade and home gaming history from Pacman though to Doom.

Quote:

High Score is a documentary series about the golden age of video games, when legends – from Pac-Man to Doom – were brought to life. Through ingenuity and sheer force of will, computer pioneers and visionary artists from around the globe spawned the iconic worlds of Space Invaders, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Sonic the Hedgehog, Madden NFL, and beyond. Without rules or roadmaps, players and innovators alike pushed the limits of money to be made, rivals to be crushed, and hearts to be won. This is the story of the brains behind the pixels and how their unmatched innovation built a multi-billion dollar industry – almost by accident.
It's really well made with great graphics and plenty of nostalgia. Recommended :p

Raising a kid in south London

My little boy has just turned 5 and has started going to a (nice) primary school in Anerley. Recently I’ve been giving some thought as to the longer term life plan.

I personally didn’t grow up in South London so only know it as a fully grown adult. I love living here, it’s rough round the edges but it’s home.

But I’m increasingly aware of all the bad shit that happens. The crime levels, gang stuff, drugs, knife violence, poverty etc. Seeing the way some of the teenage shitbags behave around here doesn’t help with that perception.

Does anyone who has experience raising kids in south London, or of being a kid raised in south London, have any advice? Am I just being a typical Middle class wimpish daily mail type moaning about nothing, or is there genuinely something to worry about? Would you raise a kid in south London or would you get out to somewhere safer/ with a better quality of life if you could?

TIA

Latest Record Internet Speed (178 Tbps)

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Working with two companies, Xtera and KDDI Research, the research team led by Dr Lidia Galdino (UCL Electronic & Electrical Engineering), achieved a data transmission rate of 178 terabits a second (178,000,000 megabits a second) – a speed at which it would be possible to download the entire Netflix library in less than a second.

The record, which is double the capacity of any system currently deployed in the world, was achieved by transmitting data through a much wider range of colours of light, or wavelengths, than is typically used in optical fibre. (Current infrastructure uses a limited spectrum bandwidth of 4.5THz, with 9THz commercial bandwidth systems entering the market, whereas the researchers used a bandwidth of 16.8THz.)

The benefit of the technique is that it can be deployed on already existing infrastructure cost-effectively, by upgrading the amplifiers that are located on optical fibre routes at 40-100km intervals. (Upgrading an amplifier would cost £16,000, while installing new optical fibres can, in urban areas, cost up to £450,000 a kilometre.)

Disillusionment Reigns

A poll out by YouGov two days ago is pretty alarming, and shows just what cynicism and disillusionment is out there among the electorate.

It also goes some way to explaining why Labour has not made up sufficient ground yet to be ahead in the Westminster voting intention polling.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

28% thinking the Tories who have had ten years of incompetence on display and in practice, are comparatively incompetent, is quite understandable, but 28% also thinking that Labour out of power for the last ten years is also incompetent, is weird.

It also means that around 10% of those 28% are still willing to vote Tory in the Westminster intention vote despite thinking they are incompetent, likewise for Labour. That leaves 8% for either party to convince otherwise and win their vote in the next election. The Tories under Johnson and Cummings, are currently going south in this respect, and I think Starmer will benefit from this over the next four years.

Septic Tanks

We know how much the BBS loves shit puns, so thought I'd float this open goal.

In amongst the punnery, it would also be nice to know if anyone has any experience with replacing a septic tank. Rumour: Jamal Lewis Summer 2020

Exclusive: Crystal Palace set sights on signing £20m-valued Norwich City player

Crystal Palace have set their sights on signing Norwich City defender Jamal Lewis this summer, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old is in high demand among English sides this summer but the Canaries are holding out for a fee of around £20million if they are to let him go.

A source at Selhurst Park has told Football Insider that the Eagles, who made a move for the left-back during the January transfer window, have reignited their interest and are plotting another raid of Carrow Road.

Premier League champions Liverpool have already had an offer of £8million rising to £10m knocked back for the Northern Ireland international.

However, Norwich are not prepared to let Lewis depart on the cheap and insisted the Reds would have to double their offer if they were to sell up.

The defender, who came through the youth ranks at the Norfolk-based outfit, has already played 100 times for the Canaries and was a mainstay in the Premier League last season.

He made 28 top-flight appearances and was one of the club’s standout performers despite their relegation back to the Championship.

His current contract, which was signed back in 2018, is set to keep him tied down at Carrow Road until 2023 and as such Norwich know they are in a strong negotiating position in terms of a transfer.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson is in the market for a new left-back this summer as competition to current senior star Patrick van Aanholt.

The 29-year-old played 29 times for the Eagles last season, with natural centre-back Jairo Reidewald used as a makeshift full-back in his absence.

It is understood that Hodgson views Lewis as someone who could offer the same attacking outlet as van Aanholt next season and offer real competition to the Dutch flyer.

Not easy to have a virtual NC without it looking like a telethon or extended TV ad.

Fairly clear that Biden is unfit for office and it's Trump vs Harris for President.

Fox and CNN are equally biased in their respective camps and there is no bipartisan US broadcaster.

The willingness of US political figures to stare in the camera and tell bare faced lies is interesting.

UK politicians will skirt and evade difficult topics but on the US lying seems accepted.

Michelle Obama was talking about the terrible " children in cages at the Mexican border " situation.

FACT CHECK : These cages were built by her husband's administration and the upsetting photographs were taken while he was in office.

There will be similar BS coming from the GOP as well

Driveway quote

Absolute novice on this kind of stuff guys so could do with some advice. Have got a driveway quote covering the following...

-64sqm driveway to be block-paved using Bradstone Monksbridge pavers. Inset border of a different colour (one block thick)
-Fences run on either side including gravel boards and concrete posts (drive is 8m long each side in total). First fence panel 6ft on either side, all other panels 4 foot. Looking at contemporary timber fence panels so slightly more expensive than standard ones.
-Acco drains installed across the full 8m width of the house and garage which will run in to a soakaway dug 5m from the house

Total I’ve been quoted is £7,500, is that reasonable?

The Day my Foot Doctor met Peter Wall

Apologies in advance if this comes across as a ‘guess you had to be there’ story. It’s just that in these strange times where once normal folk are walking the streets mumbling to themselves, I find myself, at the most inappropriate of times breaking out in a little chuckle that raises the eyebrows of those in my presence.
It’s a waste of time trying to explain the reason for these minor outbursts to Americans, without them calling for the men in the white coats, or giving me the business card of their latest therapist. So I’ve come to the conclusion that in order to move on I must share the story of this incident with the good old Memory Laneists, who will understand it and maybe even see a slight bit of nostalgic humour in it .
A couple of weeks ago I had a minor foot injury and made an afternoon appointment with a foot doctor. Prior to this I was on a very unsuccessful clean up mission of my apartment. Before mission was accomplished I came across a few old Palace scrap books, which meant I stopped what I was doing and started reading them and getting all nostalgic. The cello tape had yellowed as had a lot of the match reports and pictures. A few of the pictures were loose with the tape still around them. I’d removed them about ten years ago when I attempted to become all techo and started trying to scan some pics on the BBS. I think my success rate was one in four. Anyway one of the pictures that was very much the worse for wear was one from 1973 of Alan Whittle and Peter Wall, in their civvie clothes, taken at some Palace function. Even with the utmost care the cutting fell apart when I touched it. It split in two almost perfectly which makes me think I bent it years ago in order to just scan the picture of one of them. A few more loose articles fell to the floor and before I had time to sort them out I remembered my appointment. I rushed around a bit to get ready and because of the sore foot I couldn’t wear socks so I stuck on a pair of flip flops.
At the doctors, his assistant, a small East European lady asked me to remove my footwear. When I did this, she asked me to raise the sore foot. A sudden look of alarm came over her face. “You have something stuck to your foot,” she said. Until she said that, I hadn’t noticed or felt anything. She grabbed at the piece of paper, which, with the help of a still clinging piece of 50 year old cello tape had stuck to the sole of my foot. “What is this?”she asked. I looked at the picture and there was the great Peter Wall staring right at me. I told her it was Peter Wall, and explained that I must have walked on him and he’d stuck to my foot. For unknown reasons she wasn’t impressed with the jaundiced picture of Peter Wall and didn’t even acknowledge that she’d ever heard of him. Instead of comparing notes of his performances in the Claret and Blue and the Red and blue she unceremoniously squashed the cutting up and threw poor Peter Wall in the bin. Then to add insult to injury she started spraying disinfectant everywhere, including on my throbbing foot. This woman obviously wasn’t at Stamford Bridge in 76, or ever saw Peter superbly marshal the Palace defense as a sweeper, or from the left back position, mark the best right wingers of the era out of the game. If she did she’d have shown a bit more compassion. Then again, in her defense she was only about 30.
I don’t know where in the world Peter Wall is now, but I wonder how he’d react if he knew a picture of himself from nearly 50 years ago, was stuck to the sole of a big smelly foot in a New York City doctor’s office and then tossed into a garbage bin by a glorified toe washer who would never have been able to lace his shoes.

Sorry for the ramble, but like I said “I guess you had to be there.”

Fixture leak: Villa home??????

hi guys

i just saw some leaked fixtures from the opening day, it came from a twitter account with 7 followers so I think that indicates this could be legit info, on top of that Asda's online sports platform shared an article including the tweet.

Based on these leaked fixtures how many goals do you think we will score from set pieces over the coming season?

Chelsea v Brighton

Crystal Palace v Aston Villa

Everton v Arsenal

Fulham v Manchester United

Leicester v Newcastle

Manchester City v Liverpool

Southampton v Burnely

Tottenham v Leeds

West Brom v West Ham

Wolves v Sheffield United

Fixture leak: City away??????

Apparently the first round of fixtures has been leaked.

If correct we have city away. Best fixtures to open with are the tough ones. Always early shocks and getting those games out of the way before they get into full stride is ideal.

The Premier League is rigged

It’s the blatantly obvious elephant in the room that even a young child can see and yet is never talked about in the media:

In the Premier League, economic might determines sporting achievement. Plain and simple.

We all know it and yet the farce is allowed to continue where the system is totally rigged in favour of the super rich. By assessing every sides transfer spend and wage budgets, you can nigh on predict Premier League final positions within about three places every season.

And yet managers like Guardiola are lorded as ‘greats’ and tactical geniuses despite being able to assemble a squad, which in effect are a collection of the best players in the world. He has spent £900m at City and has failed to even get them into a Champions League semi final. Success? Does that deserve the title of being lorded as a great manager? What would Hodgson or Wilder have achieved with that budget? Be surprised if either didn’t enjoy similar domestic success as the ‘great’ Pep.

I’ve said it many times before, but the Premier League is like having a 100m sprint race where six of the eight competitors have to run with their hands tied behind their backs. The other two able bodied runners obviously finish first and second and wheel away in triumph getting all the cheers, congratulations, plaudits and prizes, deemed the best in their field and talked reverently in terms of sporting achievement. That would be madness eh? Welcome to the Premier League. What a fantastic message that sends out to society. Being super rich is more impressive and rewarding than ability, talent, hard work and loyalty.

In a fair and true sporting competition, there would be a limit to how many players above a certain amount of transfer fee can be bought by one club, and a limit on the average wage. Never going to happen is it?

In the absence of that ever happening, I think there should be a real league table produced and publicly distributed, where budgets are taken into account up against sporting results. Then we can really assess who have really achieved in the truest sporting sense.

Congratulations Sheffield United! The TRUE Premier League Champions of 2019/20.

Fantasy Premier League BBS League 20/21

It’s that time again already folks!

After what seemed a never ending 19/20 season, the FPL site has launched again 4 weeks before the 20/21 season starts on 12th Sept.

Seems a little strange it’s so early as no fixtures are even released yet but anyway you can start some early tinkering with new prices, players and position changes to get your head around!

The CPFC BBS League is up and running again - if you played last season you should automatically join.

If you are new, simply use the link below and you'll be added automatically after you've entered the game.

Notable position changes:

Aubameyang ➡ MID
Delph ➡ MID
Richarlison ➡ FWD
Fernandinho ➡ DEF
Rashford ➡ MID
Martial ➡ FWD
Ritchie ➡ MID
Lundstram ➡ MID
Dier ➡ DEF
Antonio ➡ FWD
Jota ➡ MID

Also noticed game week deadlines are now 90 mins before instead of 1 hour - presumably to avoid any team news leaks.

Best of luck!

Can't get pussy

My daughter's cat has got himself trapped in my neighbour's garage and we reckon he's been there since tea-time Thursday. Now it looks like the neighbour has gone away for the weekend.

We can see the cat through the glass-panelled door by looking over our fence, but there's no clear way to get to him other than by climbing into next door's garden and breaking in. We've tried contacting the neighbour, to no avail.

Anyone know the legalities of this? Cat is still alive as of 7.15am, but we don't know for how much longer. :(

Proviosnal Driving license insurance

Hi All,
I have a car which I have insured and added my wife as a named driver.

We phoned up my insurance company and said that we wanted to add my daughter to the insurance, but they said that they won’t due to the insurance group.

We they got a quote from a company for provisional insurance – all good.

We phoned another company to get a quote and they said that they would only create a policy for my daughter as the main driver and for us to be named driver or one of us to be the main driver and the others be named driver etc and said that we should cancel the other insurance. They wouldn’t allow us to start two policies, one for us and another one for my daughter, this is the sister company to my insurer.

From what I have read, it is not illegal to have two policies but there can be complication if you have to make a claim but can’t see anything concreate on where we stand we just take out the additional provisional insurance with the other company.

Any advice?

BBS Legal Beagles

Arrived in Greece last week.

Had a tear up at the airport with Enterprise who insisted on taking card details to cover some kind of guarantee? Car hire and extra cover insurance was already pre-paid.

No damage to the car (yet!) but expecting more grief from them when returning home Saturday or maybe get stiffed for something suspect once I'm back home.

I can't NOT sign for handing back the motor but would like to add a caveat maybe something like 'without prejudice' but unsure if that carries any weight legally?

Advice welcome :p

Your Three favourite scenic views?

mercredi 12 août 2020

Must be getting old, because an old vista has been playing on my mind recently. Which got me to thinking about what my favourite or most impressive views have been over my 6 decades.

So I'll keep it fairly brief and go ahead with mine. With an small explanation as to why.

Sydney Harbour first for me. I knew it was going to be something else, and generally when you think that it's not quite as good as you expect. However Sydney Harbour totally blew me away the first time I clapped eyes on it. I never thought a large size city could produce such beauty, with the Icons of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera house as focal points. Just breathtaking for me. Then the expanse of numerous bays, trees and houses...I think I was shaking when I saw it. It's impossible to find a photo that does it true justice.

Uluru, from a distance of say 5K's is a feast for the eyes, it really does change colour at different times of day. It really does feel spiritual to the point of being pilgrimage like in the way you have to travel to get there. Nothing quite like it anywhere else.

The Walk Over London Bridge, From London Bridge Station to the City. I still close my eyes and see it. Twas part of my routine for almost 10 years. Outside of the rush hour as well. I never took if for granted even at the young age of 16 it impressed me and It's still ingrained in my mind, makes one fully realise they are a Sarf Londoner that walk.

Special mention to the City of Hobart from he Top of Mount Wellington... although there are lots of mountain city views around the world like that. Still it is impressive. The only photo that does any of the above justice is the Mount Wellington/Hobart one.

Gary Lineker

Never quite understood why BBC seem so keen to pay Gary Lineker so much money to present MOTD , etc . Any decent presenter could do same job at a fraction of the cost , doubt if viewing figures would be affected . BBC are constantly saying they are short of money but then say they have to pay top money to keep best ( ????? ) people .
Read this article today and it does some up Lineker to me , trying to take some sort of moral stance on whatever issue is the topic of the day.

In the TalkSport interview , the MP said

'It's the liberal left again - virtue signalling - trying to say all the right things, trying to tweet out the right messages on social media to look popular.

Suggestion: Grand plan

Have got halfway through this type of post a few times but never quite finished it, instead deleting it. Rather than just list the transfer names, instead musing on what shape and how we might play next season and the gaps we have. I have got the impression from things Roy has mentioned that he fancies us in what I would call the 'Liverpool shape'. A 433 that is Defensively sound with 4 at the back focused mainly on protecting the centre (i.e. strong CBs with a midfield 3 in front of them that can provide a shield when under pressure) but then in front of them 3 forwards all able to break away and score. Offensively we would capitalise on breaks and when on top use the full backs to provide the width and crosses pushing high while the midfield probe etc but providing cover. The higher we can defend the better against the weaker teams but capable of dropping deeper if we need to (the realities of life in the PL). The midfield 3 would most likely comprise 1 supplementing the attack more often than the other 2. This could well be Schlupp and (don't take the mick) he showed some nice signs when he dropped into the hole behind the striker a few times before his injury. His ability to strike the ball and willingness to get into the box/shoot make me optimistic.

The quality of the front 3 being key as they have to be able to hold up the ball and also create openings. We cannot continue with players that struggle to take or create chances.

So how does our current squad fit that? I doubt we can do this in one season and suspect there will be compromises galore but we have to fix the lack of goals in the side and so every player coming in has to have goals on their resume.

Off we go.

Goalkeepers
Guaita
Hennessey
Henderson (or a swap)

GKs are OK but ideally we would swap Henderson for a high potential keeper but not a priority today.

Full Backs
Ward
Aanholt
Mitchell
Ferguson

Bit nervous that it might prove a season too early for Tyrick to be starting regularly and so hoping Patrick makes an early return and stays fit. Having only seen glimpses of Ferguson I am not sure if he is right or not. Let's hope so. Both he and Ward can play right or left and so that protects Tyrick if the wheel was to 'fall off'. Will these offer enough of a threat? PVA is spot on but..... a risk we have to take I think.

OK - so now it gets tricky because we can't sustain/afford so many CBs. So I would jettison 2 of them and move Kouyate back to a CB role. I have kept JT and MS but TBH it could as easily have been the others. If we had scope I would look for a young CB quality prospect to add for development but don't think we have the £ unless they are a really cheap gamble.

Centre Backs
Tomkins
Sakho
Kelly
Kouyate

Midfielders
Milivojević
McArthur
McCarthy
Reidewald
Schlupp
New

The new midifelder would need to be a quality first pick candidate with goals and assists but not another Meyer/Ozil-like defensively. i.e. they need to be able to do the work and win the ball in the PL etc. i.e. - we can't support an all out number 10 without upgrading a lot more other positions

Forwards (in a 3)
Ayew
Benteke
Zaha
New CF
New WRF
New WLF

If Wilf leaves then he also needs replacing but with someone with goals in their locker.

Re the new slots. I don't think Pierrick will be ready for this season and so He may well be the 7th option dependent on loans and available cash. We just have to have a goal scoring option in the middle and two more wide forwards again with goals.

That controversially means that we should be moving on

Cahill, Dann, Meyer, Wickham and Townsend.

It's not that I don't rate or like these players, more that they don't really fit and keeping them is a compromise. TBH it's harsh on Dann, Cahill and Andros. I suspect we will end up keeping Townsend but he won't score the goals we need as a wide forward. If we keep Meyer as well I think we will struggle without losing a forward to supplement the midfield offensive quality. I know Meyer has a lot of 'fans' on here but after 21 starts, 25 more appearances and 3000 mins of opportunity we needed to have seen more than we have to keep him. 'He plays 'nice' with Wilf isn't enough. If Wickham is seriously fit etc. he might make one of those slots if we are short of cash but I suspect it's one season too late now.

I doubt we will get the quality in these purchases that I would like and see us picking up Niasse and Hendrick because they are both out of contract. TBF I doubt Salah, Firmino and Mane would come would they?

I doubt Wilf will stay and I am worried if he does in a way. Primarily because he simply isn't himself and unless his head shifts 180 degrees i can't see anything good for either of us. Also as a wide forward, neither he nor Andros attempt to get into the box enough. They have spent their careers hanging wide and don't appear to be able to adapt.

The other changes will be left to next year.

One way of looking at it and obviously there are oodles of others.

Slight link here in this sun article. Seems well reported he is being made available for sale by Arsenal. I would be surprised if we weren’t strongly interested (if the price is sub £20m). Young, premier league experience and can play anywhere in midfield or full back. I think this is a young player that Roy would be prepared to play given his experience.

Transfer Budget Summer 2020

With FFP suspended are we able to spend big this summer?

Having had a quick look through the accounts it seems we had a cash balance of £11.9m at the end of June 2019. We spent £7.4m on transfers last summer and had £7.5m of transfer fees due within one year. Against this we received £46m from the sale of AWB.

If we assume an EBITDA profit of £8m (half of last year due to Covid) then we currently have £51m in the bank. Obviously some of that will go towards financing the academy but I would guess a lot of that won't be paid until completion next year. We owed another £9m in transfer fees due after more than one year but its unclear how much of that we need to pay this summer.

It appears to me we have £30-50m cash in the bank ready for transfers. Am I missing something?

Being an expat, emigrant or immigrant

vendredi 7 août 2020

One of the great strengths of the BBS is it is a magnet for those that have left these shores to seek their fortune, love or simply a different lifestyle abroad.

This allows us in South London to hear all sorts of on the ground accounts of what is happening in various countries, while they get to hear about London and of course Palace.

What I find interesting though is that occasionally I feel a sense of loss, that however well they are doing overseas there is a feeling on having missed out, or that its not quite real, an otherness to their existence.

I have lived abroad many times but never for more than a few years at a time, but I have noticed a few times (most of all in Australia) how often ex-pats compared their new country to their old explaining how much better it is. I oft wondered whether they were trying to convince me or constantly justify something to themselves.

So as someone who has a wandering an eye and a oft-returning hanker to pack up and leave Albion himself, can I ask:

Do any of you overseasers regret your departure?
