Looks like this is going to be Labour policy. I have to say it's a bit of a blunt instrument but I would not be in favour of its abolition. In the absence of anything else, it's a handy tool for parents.
Maybe it could be refocused a bit and give better scores to schools that improve the less able and less affluent pupils. I know when my kids were at school they gave these "value added" scores. You could at least get an idea of how the school was doing.
