Second hand car advice

I need to think about getting a replacement for my 2001 Passat. Engine is still perfect, but electrics constantly going. Have no interest in cars beyond as a means of getting from A to B, so advice on cars to look for (second hand) would be welcome.

Budget - £10-15k, I guess.

If I could just get a newer Passat, that would be great, but I'm told I'm not allowed to get another diesel.

Ideally 1.6 +
Safe (kids)
Good size boot

Any tips? TIA

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Sports Shop on Whitehorse Lane.

Can someone tell me the name of a sports shop that use to be on Whitehorse Lane? It was there during the 80s and at the corner of Thrisk Road.

I think it was called Model Sports or something like that.

As a kid I use to love going in there before games for Palace souvenirs and memorabilia.

Match Updates: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL: Tottenham v Liverpool

Saturday 1st June
20:00

Alphabetical madness again...Tottenham named first because of some coin toss thingy.

Liverpool are favourites and surely will finally turn their recent dominance into a trophy, but...

the football Gods clearly appear to want Spurs to win this cup; there can be no other explanation for their crazy, VAR supported, last gasp run.

Will Liverpool make good the hurt of amassing 97pts and not winning the title? :D, or will Spurs do it and send Arsenal TV into a suicide Live event?

The build up starts now...

Launches in London and a handful of other cities today.

An undoubted step change, particularly for AI, surveillance and the internet of things.

The first, and lesser, of the all English european finals.

Two London clubs playing at a conveniently chosen neutral venue in Azerbaijan.

One of the things that has been playing on my mind in the build up to this, and I’m sure all football fans too is...why in all the listings and adverts for the game are Chelsea named before Arsenal??? I didn’t get a great education, but I’m pretty sure A comes before C or is Baku considered a home from home for Chelsea? Rightly, not far from Russia.

Discussion: Milot Rashica and Robert Skov

To view the link you have to Register or Login. I have no idea how reliable it is but at the bottom it suggests four alternative wingers Palace might consider. Two are British therefore, IMO, they will be overpriced. However, the other two are from overseas:

U-20 World Cup

lundi 27 mai 2019

I know nobody is watching this because England didn't make the tournament but there is a very worrying trend. The amount of rolling around on the ground and screaming in "pain" is enough to make Neymar blush. Even worse, the refs are consistently falling for it and giving out yellow cards like they are on sale.

The US had a bad loss to Ukraine to start the tourney but they have a Barcelona player and a Freiburg player that are making themselves some money with their play.

Thought he was one of Derby’s best players today. Won player of the season too I understand which is saying something given everyone’s raving about Mount and Wilson. Will return to Chelsea now. Only 20 but very calm in possession, quick and strong. Would be a great loanee with option to buy if/when Sakho goes. Hopefully AWB will sell the club at the U21 tournament.

Discussion: Who would you like us to sign in Summer 2019 transfer window?

Pretty sure we have had these type of threads before, so thought I'd start one for this window. I like Butland, but Guaita has done well so it is not a position we need someone for. Similarly I'd like a young, pacy centre back but I don't think we need one because Sakho and Tomkins are excellent when fit, plus we also have Dann and Kelly who are more than capable, Kouyate in an emergency, Sam Woods from the academy and the most promising back-up of the lot: Joel Ward. For me Joel Ward should be the next one in after MS and JT. He is not quick enough to be a top class full back in the Premier League, although he is just about fast enough to be adequate. But as a centre back he's very mobile, and as this is not the Championship with lots of big target men his lack of aerial dominance doesn't matter. He can also pass it out ok. We will surely look to trim the squad of the deadwood again so I expect Speroni, Souare, Puncheon, Riedewald, Sorloth and Sako to depart. None of them have contributed much in terms of playing time, and so I don't think they need to even be replaced. Should save approximately £200k a week on wages. I'd also send back Ayew and Batshuayi, and look to sign just 3 quality players. Hopefully Dreher can have a good pre-season, and be added to the periphery of the first team squad as well.

So what do we need?

For me, we still need the Cabaye replacement: someone who can slot in next to Luka to act as a defensive shield, and also be comfortable enough in possession to take on the responsibility of passing it out. Kouyate is not good enough in possession to be the right partner for Luka, and Meyer is currently too lightweight and not trusted by Hodgson there. McArthur has been brilliant for us but is weak positionally, desn't win enough ball and is better using his energy as a right sided midfielder. I don't think we will get anyone as classy as Cabaye, so we need to look for someone who has other attributes which would contribute to the team. Someone left footed would be good. Delph would be excellent but he is 29 so he wouldn't be a long-term signing. I'd prefer to go for someone younger as apart from Meyer and AWB we have quite an old squad. I'd like to see us go for Philip Billing. We were linked to him in 2017. He was voted the players' player of the year and their young player of the year. He wins a lot of tackles and interceptions. he's physical and decent in the air, has a long throw (which would be a major asset as Benteke is the best in the air in the entire league) can pass ok and has a decent shot on him. Huddersfield are relegated and he will be available for transfer. £20m would surely do it.

For me, we also still need the RLC replacement. Schlupp has had a reasonable season but switches off defensively and is poor in possession. Meyer is improving, but lacks the pace and skill to go past his man. Good squad players, but we need a first choice left midfielder. I'd like to see us go for Ademola Lookman. He's not the quickest but he has good feet and a lot of skill. Plus I feel he will score goals on a regular basis and is quite clever. He looks to me to be almost two footed and can put a good cross in, something we desperately require. Another youngster, he's apparently available for £20m. Sign him up.

The final transfer I'd look to make would be Danny Welbeck. The wages would be big, and it would be a bit of a gamble because of a poor injury record. But he has done incredibly well with Hodgson, works hard, would allow us to press from the front, would be a threat in behind to give others like Zaha more space and would score 10-15 goals if remaining fit. Plus he'd be an additional aerial threat from set pieces and a help when defending them as well. On a free transfer he'd be worth the risk.

New Signings

1) Philip Billing
2) Ademola Lookman
3) Danny Welbeck

Approximately £40m outlay, and the wage bill would actually go down if we got rid of the 8 players suggested above (either permanently or on loan). Plus we'd have 3 new first XI players, and still have cover in every position which just goes to show how bloated our squad currently is. We need to invest in quality not quantity, and that what I'd do. Would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

Favourite B Sides

Inspired by it’s mention on the Smiths thread, what’s everyone’s favourites?
I think it’s fair to include tracks on EPs too.
I’ll start the ball rolling with two by The Jam - Tales From The Riverbank & Liza Radley, though I’ll be back to list some more.

Liberal Democrat Leadership Election

I thought we might as well have a thread on it seeing as there is a Tory one, and Vince Cable is obviously stepping down on the 23rd July. Don't really know the candidates but the clear favourite seems to be Jo Swinson.

LGBT Protests outside primary schools

Cant see a thread on this. WTF is happening. How are people being allowed to bully, intimidate and harass teachers and disrupt schoolkids to protest at equality being taught to kids?

I don't understand why the protesters dont get dispersed and told to suck it up. LGBT relations are normal and happen everywhere so why shouldn't kids be brought up to see it that way - and the law appears to agree with that too. As someone said, you don't get to pick what equality you can have.

The protesters say they are not homophobic but what else can it be if they think learning about LGBT issues is going to 'corrupt' kids?

Rumour: Clyne Summer 2019

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Crystal Palace and West Ham are rivalling Bournemouth with interest in a permanent deal for Nathaniel Clyne, Sky Sports News understands.

Napoli are also understood to be interested in the right-back, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe is understood to be keen to bring in the England international full-time - with Liverpool wanting a £15m fee.

Clyne made 15 appearances for Howe after joining in the January transfer window, having found his first-team opportunities limited at Anfield.

Both Palace and West Ham were also keen on a loan for Clyne in the January window.

What happens now ??

May gone. Divisions in both major parties. A Brexit to be delivered.... or not. What a mess :( I haven’t a clue. A right FUBAR by the whole lot of them. As when Sam suggested the people vote the lords of Westeros laughed and said not to be so stupid. Maybe they are right ;)

When statues go wrong

Some of the tweet replies are great. My favourite: ‘This statue of George Best...any chance you can make it look like he was a zombie in Spandau Ballet?’

I was listening to the radio about the mockery of this latest tribute, and a lady from the Sculpture society rang in quite incandescent, saying bad sculpting has become an epidemic as art schools no longer teach the art of sculpting, so people just pick it up without any formal training and think they can do it, and what we are ending up with is a load of awful sculptures all over the country.

Rule changes

Not sure if this has been raised elsewhere but the intro of sin bins and goalies having to be outfield players seems completely ridiculous to me. I don’t understand what about this would improve the game, it’s as if we want to make football more like other sports rather than helping it to retain its own identity

Tory leadership election

mardi 21 mai 2019

With the schedule set for the Maybot to finally be dismantled for spare parts and recycling, and the runners & riders already flashing their colours in the Parade ring before cantering down to the starting line of the election contest to be the next leader of the Tory Party - and with it the nation, the need for a new thread is probably already upon us.

Johnson, B, is the clear ante post favourite but reports are they will be a record field, with Raab, Gove, McVeigh, Rudd, Truss, Hancock, Hunt and Rory Stewart all likely to stand, possibly plus a few others.

May the stabbing from the shits commence, and blood spill around the ring.

Proud of our club

I am so proud of our club for the community work that they do. They use their media power to highlight issues and the team give up their time for causes that are not always getting the help they need from government and councils.

I believe we are one of, if not the best and it helps to keep the players grounded when they are reminded of how bad other people’s lives can be.

CPFC is a club to be proud of for more than what happens on the pitch

In short it said:
* Everton will accept £7m bids,
* he's on 75k,
* interest from Soton & Newcastle
* he's open to being at Anderlecht again.
* It even says Palace are interested in a loan deal.

* Newcastle fans not happy (Pardew favourite cockney mafia etc)

I'd love the see him tear it up again in the Prem.

Suggestion: Nick Powell

This got the thumbs down last year although the media did link us at some stage.

Out of contract at Wigan and he has turned down a new deal. Aged 25 and an attacking midfielder. He had a 2 1/2 month spell out last season with hamstring problems but played 32 league games and scored 8 goals with 7 assists.

In the previous season, albeit in League 1, he scored 15 goals with 7 assists.

Suggestion: Andre Schurrle

I've been trawling through transfermarkt checking which players have been released and any players who were out on loan last season and have since returned to their club.

Schurrle was on a 2 year loan at Fulham but following their relegation it would appear the second year has been cancelled. According to transfermarkt the actual loan fee was only £360k but presumably his wages were fairly hefty.

The guy is 28 and scored 6 gaols in a struggling Fulham side. Presumably Borussia Dortmund are looking to offload and if they can't sell they must be open to a loan again.

A possible left wing replacement for Wilf, if he goes.

4-4-2 or 4-3-3 next season?

Last summer we played the entire pre-season in a 4-4-2. We then started the season in the 4-4-2, but quickly reverted to 4-3-3. (Admittedly we lost Benteke to injury very early on.) We finished the season strongly in a 4-4-2 with notable highlights being the Arsenal away game (4-4-2) and Bournemouth at home (4-4-2) where we scored FIVE goals at home - our previous best in the other 18 games was two goals. I can also remember many games where we started 4-3-3 and won the points after switching to 4-4-2 late on leading to a massive improvement.

What are people's thoughts on what formation we should play next season under Hodgson?

Rumour: PVA

mercredi 15 mai 2019

PVA part of a double swoop with AWB for £50m according to To view the link you have to Register or Login. Perhaps if they double we might consider it.

MANCHESTER UNITED are eyeing a £50million double swoop for Crystal Palace pair Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Patrick Van Aanholt.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to overhaul his defence this summer with a pair of full-backs are a particular demand.

Bissaka, 21, is high on all the club’s shopping list, but the Eagles are desperate to hold onto the highly-rated defender.

With Antonio Valencia gone, United are looking for a long-term successor to Ashley Young.

And despite Diogo Dalot’s arrival last year, the Old Trafford top brass are determined to spend big to bag Wan-Bissaka.

United’s interest in the England Under-21 star is well documented but their admiration for Van Aanholt could raise a few eyebrows.

Despite Luke Shaw being crowned Player of The Year, Solskjaer wants an experienced Premier League operator to provide genuine competition for the left-back position.

Van Aanholt, 28, has another two years to run on his current deal at Selhurst Park.

The Dutch international who moved to South London from Sunderland two years ago was one of the success stories at Selhurst Park last term, making 40 appearances and scoring four goals.

His energy and attacking instincts have caught the eye of Solskjaer and his coaching staff who feel he could be a viable alternative to the England international in defence.

Van Aanholt has been linked with a move to Serie A, with Juventus and Roma monitoring his situation.

But United reckon a deal could be done with the Eagles to take both defenders to Old Trafford.

Obviously, the locals were up in arms and even started a petition to get the original reinstated.

It turns out that this guy is a Palace fan too and has been trolling the BHAFC supporters expertly. Much pant wetting!

The music isn't to my taste but great marketing and exposure.

Jeremy kyle show cancellation. Justified or not ?

Having had the misfortune of seeing this drivel a few times, I'm not surprised the tragic death of one of the subjects on it, is being attributed to his appearing on the programme. It seems to me that maximum humiliation is the modus operandi, with kyle himself relishing the role he plays as chief humiliator . It makes for cringeworthy tv , but oddly it seems popular as the ratings for it are extremely good . Should it be permanently cancelled ? I'd say yes given it thrives on people's misery .

Wonder how much traction this will have?

Pretty blurry footage but not great PR for them. Have to say my main thought watching this was, if i was on that plane I wouldn’t be happy with loads of blokes banging on the interior in a thing that’s flying 30,000 feet above ground.

FIFA Coaching badges?

What exactly do they teach you on these courses? I was listening to the WBA v Villa game on the radio today and the commentator made some comment about the WBA manager learning how to handle going down to 10 men and having rearrange the team etc. while getting his badges.

Struck me as a pretty stupid comment, as surely this would come under the category of common sense, and not something you need a coaching badge to figure out!

Which got me to thinking what do they actually teach you? I think I sort of assumed it was more to do with health and safety, nutrition, laws of the game and training dos and don’ts. I can’t believe it would include tactics and formations…

Anyone any ideas?

A very decent ref and good / amusing to see him celebrating like a 'normal' supporter:

Match Updates: May 14th - 17th

It’s the completion of the Championship and League 1 play off semi finals the next 4 nights.

Kicking off with WBA (1) v Aston Villa (2) tonight

Have you got the 'post season downer'?

Every time the season ends I always get the 'urgh, 3 months of no Palace'. Even more so when we finish the campaign in fine form like we have the last two seasons.

I know there is other football coming up like the play offs, cup finals, Nation's league etc but let's face it, it's not the same euphoria you get from Palace scoring/winning and the desolation when we lose. We also have the fixture list to look forward to on Thursday 13th June and obviously the friendlies in July/August.

How do you feel when the season comes to an end?

What do you plan on doing for the next 12 weekends to try and replace your 'Palace kick'?

Maybe you're glad it's over and you can have worry free weekends.

August 10th can't soon enough for me.

Moment of the season?

So many incidents to choose from in what eventually turned out to be a fairly comfortable campaign - even if we could scarcely win at home.

Obvious examples include Andros's crackers v City and Burnley and, on a lower-key note, his miss at Old Trafford when it looked like we might finally beat "that lot" for the first time in the Prem.

Among my other enduring memories are those wonderful wins at Turf Moor, the King Power and the Emirates, the first of our goals at Anfield, Luka's remarkable calmness from the spot all season (bar Everton) and the Doncaster trip, albeit more memorable for the fans than for the performance on the pitch.

But I have to say, having watched it back many times since Sunday, that Wilf's magical run after being wound up by Howe's thugs pretty much topped them all. A moment of pure last-day brilliance that had everyone on their feet as our talisman gained full and final retribution to send us all home smiling.

The chorus of "He's just too good for you" which followed was brimming with pure passion, truth and justified vengeance from everyone with a red and blue heart. Not to mention how hilarious it was watching him fly past their defence. :D

Of course there were also several moments that should perhaps be instantly consigned to the dustbin of history. Those misses at Watford and against Newcastle that could have changed the complexion of our early season, Macca's mess-up from two yards (the details don't come readily to mind), and the defeats against, well, you know who.

But all in all it's been fun, even if it didn't always feel like it at the time. Any other personal high/lowlights? I'm aware there are loads I've missed out.

CFC & CPFC

Point of discussion, that we seem to have a good off field relationship and we have certainly benefitted in recent seasons with loan signings but is it a master and servant relationship? Personally feel that it suits both clubs at the moment but should we improve would Chelsea feel less benevolent?

Brian Walden RIP

For those like me who are long in the tooth the great Brian Walden, Labour MP, journalist and broadcaster died a few days ago.

His Weekend World was a must watch for those interested in politics.

His interviewing style struck the right balance and it appeared that he was well respected. Apparently he was Thatchers favourite interviewer despite exchanges like this;

Brian Walden: "You come over as being someone who one of your backbenchers said is slightly off her trolley, authoritarian, domineering, refusing to listen to anybody else – why? Why cannot you publicly project what you have just told me is your private character?"
Margaret Thatcher: "Brian, if anyone's coming over as domineering in this interview, it's you."

Shrinking Message Storage

I just logged on and my message storage seems to have shrunk. I now have considerably more messages stored than supposedly I was allowed. I have had a weed and got rid of a lot so I now have some space and really it is probably more than enough but I wondered why it happened - have I been downgraded or something?

Universal DNA testing

It is now practical and economically viable to full genome test all children at birth. Personally I believe that the health benefits for individuals and society at large are so overwhelming that this will become inevitable.

Obviously there are real concerns for individual privacy and legal rights but I believe that levels of security and limits on usage particularly by the police can be built in. A national database may also prevent private databases being created with no oversite.

I am sure that some BBSers will have opinions on this proposal.

FORMER Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra Interested in Buying Palace

From To view the link you have to Register or Login

FORMER Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra is eyeing a return to the Premier League with a potential takeover at Crystal Palace.

Shinawatra, the ex-Prime Minister of Thailand has opened talks with the London club, 11 years after selling up at the Etihad.

According to Goal, billionaire Shinawatra has made contact with Eagles chairman Steve Parish and is prepared to buy the club for around £150million.

Shinawatra, 69, is prepared to spend big to help current boss Roy Hodgson improve the squad and look to break into the top ten.

Palace beat Bournemouth 5-3 to finish 12th in the league.

Miti Tiyapairat, ex-president of Thai top-flight side Chiangrai United, expects a deal to be concluded soon.

He told ONE31: “Currently, there are negotiations about price, management, and some other details, which should be ironed out soon.

“The deal is about £150m.”

Tiyapairat hinted he could be part of the new regime at Selhurst Park under Shinawatra.

He added: “I'm up for the task, It's been my profession since I worked in management at Chiangrai United, although it is obviously a challenging role.

Surely this is only £150m for the Americans share and we're just replacing the Americans with this guy?

Rumour: Timothy Weah

RMC report this evening that United States international attacker Timothy Weah is set to be sold by PSG this summer, after a moderately successful loan spell with Scottish outfit Celtic.

Crystal Palace, Rennes and a third unnamed club have positioned themselves to purchase the son of the President of Liberia and Ballon D’Or winner George Weah.

Initially, there were talks about a second loan spell with Celtic, but on Friday the 19-year-old said goodbye to the Scottish club via social media network Instagram.

Weah’s 2018-19 campaign is not yet over, he will link up with the United States’ U20 side to play in the World Cup in Poland starting on the 23rd of May.

England, as the Host Nation and #1 Ranked Team in the World as things stand are clear favourites with the bookmakers ahead of India and Australia who are in turn streets ahead of South Africa/New Zealand/Pakistan.

Spelling reform.

I have recently become a convert to this idea mainly through reading the book Reading in the Brain. The author shows how children learning to read a language with a regular spelling system like Italian for example get up to speed at a younger age and with less stress and unsurprisingly there is a much lower reported rate of dyslexia.

The main resistance to change comes from the established class of people who have mastered the historical mess that is the spelling system of English and carry this achievement as a badge of honour but I believe it is time to bypass these people and move to a more rational system.

The main practical problem will be whose pronunciation to use as the English language has escaped the control any nation or even first language speakers but this should not stop us taking practical steps.

Here is the book that changed my mind on this issue

Prince Charles

With all the publicity about Danny Baker recently , I was just thinking why the Press didn't make more of the involvement of Prince Charles and Archbishop Carey with regards to a paedophile bishop. It appears there was a cover up by the Church at the time , I wonder whether the Powers at Buckingham Palace managed to ensure a damage limitation exercise .
The Press seem keen to keep scandals on celebrities going for as long as possible but have been relatively quiet on this ,

Lab grown meat

Would you eat it?

If you eat meat then surely it’s better as nothing has been harmed in its production and you should stop eating dead animals.

If you don’t eat meat on compassionate grounds, which is by far the majority of veggies, then surely you can eat this as nothing is harmed.

Sounds a great solution to me.

Struggling with Lager....the aftertaste makes me feel sick.

Something has happened to my gob over the last few years and its getting worse.

It doesnt seem to matter if i drink shite like Carling or something more upmarket like say Staropramen or Lowenbrau......im struggling to enjoy them because of, what i call ....a massive aftertaste problem, sort of about 10 times the taste it used to taste like! Eventually i start to feel sick!

Have i got a problem with my tastebuds or is this something that happens when you get older, or is it something to do with my acid reflux problem??!! I get the same effect with Ales.

Anyone else got an issue and has found a remedy to now enjoy a nice beer again without overtasting it!:D:D:frown:

Giro d'Italia 2019

The 2019 Giro kicks off tomorrow!

Looks like a fairly open field, with Roglic, Yates, Dumoulin, Nibali and Lopez all capable of winning overall.

No big name leader for Sky/Ineos, with Brit Geoghegan Hart and youn Tour of the Alps winner Sivakov sharing leadership.

Should be an interesting 3 weeks, as it usually is!

Laser eye treatment - anyone had it done?

Been wearing glasses for some 25 years now and it drives me nuts. I've done the soft contact lenses but never really entertained laser eye treatment, mainly due to the costs and the treatment in itself.

Anyone had any experience, details and recommendations they would like to share?

4k sport coverage without Virgin/Sky subscription?

Finally got round to getting our new TV, after finally get bored of the 10 year old Sony Bravia which got handed down to me from my parents.

Currently have a Virgin TV subscription with all the packages, and the occasional match broadcast in 4K is excellent.

However, we're looking at getting rid of Virgin as it just costs too much money, and unfortunately if you want sports you have to pay top whack (movies, kids tv, etc etc).

So, is there a way of being able to watch sport in 4K (where broadcast) without having to pay a hefty subscription to Sky or Virgin?

We were thinking of going down the Now TV route before getting the TV, so that when there's something I want to watch then I can just pay for it, but I don't think they have 4K content? The new TV has the Now TV app built in, so we don't have to buy a box, but I'm unsure if 4K sport will be available on there.

10th Wedding Anniversary Present ideas

Champions League reforms

Quote:

Champions League reforms leaked

According to The New York Times, leaked UEFA documents show proposed Champions League reforms would turn it into a calcified SuperLeague.

UEFA have so far resisted the plans for a breakaway SuperLeague and offered to change the format of the existing Champions League in order to prevent those clubs creating a rival tournament.

However, the leaked proposals seem to suggest it’s not a world away from that ideal, cutting out most European clubs and with minimal risk of relegation.

“If approved, it would calcify the Champions League into a competition dominated by a small group of elite clubs, and leave as few as four of its 32 places available for teams from Europe’s 55 national leagues,” claims The New York Times.

“The new tournaments would, starting in 2024, allow the top 21 teams in a 32-team Champions League to qualify automatically for the next season’s event, effectively guaranteeing them annual participation and tens of millions of dollars more in broadcasting revenue than their domestic rivals.

“Those rivals would most likely be unable to match the rich clubs’ spending power, and would find it prohibitively difficult to play their way into the Champions League on the field.

“The biggest clubs, notably those from Spain and Italy, are pushing the proposals the hardest, according to people familiar with the discussions. They argue the changes are needed to provide more fiscal certainty year after year.

“UEFA has been in talks about proposals for months with the European Club Association, a group that is led by Juventus’s chairman, Andrea Agnelli, and that is driving the campaign for an elite competition.”

La Liga President Javier Tebas claimed after the UEFA presentation that they were being railroaded into a SuperLeague.

“We cannot accept that these are just plans and proposals for an open discussion with stakeholders about the future of professional football,” Tebas told The Times. “In reality, we were presented with a concrete project developed by UEFA in full cooperation with a small group of rich and powerful European clubs to reform European club competitions after 2024 in a format that could destroy domestic competitions and the sporting and financial sustainability of the vast majority of clubs in Europe.

“We are open for a constructive dialogue to reform European football together with other stakeholders, but if this is the project on the table, then the margins for negotiations are very limited."
No real shocks here.

The 80’s Selhurst attendance conspiracy

mardi 7 mai 2019

Back in the 80’s, among my circle of Palace attending friends, it was a common thing to speculate that the official attendance in games that drew bigger crowds was announced as lower than it actually was. The theory went that Ron would somehow manipulate the figures for financial gain. Remember when the attendance would be announced over the tannoy, there’d be raised eyebrows and ‘come off it’ side glances.

Have to say there were a few games when the likes of Chelsea or Pompey were in town and Selhurst looked pretty full, yet the attendance wasn’t much more than the modest attendance 2 weeks before against an Oldham or Blackburn.

Was this just some ‘Madden shagged Coppell’s wife’ myth motivated by our very own Mr Burns or was there substance to it?

Euro Elections 23rd May 2019

Shall we have a thread? Won't bother with a poll, same old lefty BBS etc etc.

Interesting on so many fronts this one.

The quite rapid progress of Farage's Brexit party - the acceptable face of xenophobia it seems. They could easily grab the largest vote %. Due to the lack of vetting and simply not caring, there will be plenty of stories about theirs candidates in the weeks to come but i suspect it will not matter one jot.

UKIP hopefully a busted flush again the racist pieces of shit.

Will the LibDems and Greens continue the good news for them from the locals?

Labour are a shambles but who the **** is going to vote Tory in this one? Quite possibly the final straw for the PM or rather that Party. And how strong will the Nats be in Scotland? (None of us care about that tbh but thought i'd be inclusive of a certain lovely poster).

One thing - EU citizens are of course eligible - that is quite a constituency. Is there some campaign going? I truly hope so. The worry and stress this has caused ordinary workers is a disgrace.

We are awesome

I don't think anyone would disagree that Liverpool and Man City have been the two outstanding teams this season.

They have each conceded a mere 22 goals in the league so far (with just one game to go.)

Only three teams have scored 2 against Liverpool and only three teams have scored 2 against Man City. Well done to Newcastle for scoring two against both teams.

BUT THE MIGHTY PALACE HAVE SCORED THREE AGAINST THEM BOTH :lux::lux::lux:

In fact we have scored 7 of the 44 goals they have conceded this season - about 16%.

The only team to take points from the Etihad!

Take a bow CPFC for being the only team to take a league win (and, indeed, any league points) from the mighty Man City this season.

the race for champions league places

lundi 6 mai 2019

For about the first time this has been compelling and fun for those of us not invoved. Its been fun watching some of these so-called superstars cumble under fire. Not only doe we have players from relegated side crumble to the carpet in misery and some of their fans. But now it will be these arrogant and entitled clubs and their equally arrogant and entitled fans as well when the reality of 2 from 4 hits home.

They have all been putting in stinkers and as I say some have buckled . Us Brighton Burnley, now evn Huddersfield and others. All very amusing. Its about the only time Ive been interested in that part of the table. We should all learn a lesson to get in the faces of these teams next year. For those with kids with Arsenal and Man u classmates It is their time to get some respect back. They arent so good after all.

Big game against Bournemouth

dimanche 5 mai 2019

Next week we play Bournemouth in what appears to be a nothing end of season fixture. However the difference between wining and losing is £1.9 million pounds prize money and if West Ham lose, winning could be worth £3.8 million.

To put it into context the winner of the FA cup receives £3.6 million and £3.8 is the equivalent value of the club selling an 7000 extra season tickets.

Big game next week, be nice if the team and fans perform and we finish on a real high and £3.8 million richer.

Have a Palace team ever downed tools ?

Going back to the early Eighties I cant recall a good Palace team actually downing tools to get the manager the boot , as it seems is the new fashion amongst some highly overpaid players .

We've had plenty of poor teams and crap managers but an actual quality team give up?

Closest I get is Neil Warnocks last game against Southampton when the players did seem to give up in the last 30 mins when he made some crazy subs. And Steve Coppell got the boot after a pre season freindly against Millwall 5-0 and Noades said he had to step in .(Not 100% on the details)

Left Back

Allegedly , we are going to have a very limited budget for transfers this Summer so should we consider selling PVA ? Personally I like him but I do accept his strengths are more offensively than defensively . Just wondering whether people think Schlupp would be an adequate left back with Ward as cover . If we could get £15m for PVA , that could be used towards other positions which need strengthening .

I feel we need cover for Wilf and Andros , 1 possibly 2 forwards ( all dependant on Benteke , Ayew , Batshuayi decisions - not forgetting Sorloth & Wickham ) , a creative midfielder with some pace and a young quick central defender .
None of this will be easy so maybe being able to get £15m without having to get another left back may be an option .

NB/ With regards to Wilf , desperately want him here next season but he needs to want to stay .

Suggestion: Bradley Dack

I think we’ve been linked before and he’s had another good season at Blackburn

Creative goalscoring midfielder, he seems to be a shining light everywhere he goes. Maybe it’s time to give him a chance at PL level

Age 25 and from London

Ramadan Mubarak! 1440/2019

Good luck and good health to all those fasting.

Palace's Team Spirit

A good team spirit takes you far and Palace have it in droves as can be seen when we score as the scorer often gets swamped by his team-mates in the celebration.

Many players have a great affection for the club and us fans which is why very few leave or want to leave in spite of constant media rumours that they do want to.

Not one of them has a bad word to say about Roy as they respect his knowledge of the game.

Now to just get all of the Palace fans pulling in the same direction as there is plenty to be positive about.

Discussion: Players from Relegated Teams 2019

This thread seems to pop up most years so it’s about that time. Some decent players will be available on the market this summer, who would people take?

Fulham - I quite like the look of Joe Bryan as competition to PVA, Cairney might look good in a better side, Mitro would be an obvious one. Babel has a flash of class now and again.

Cardiff - Mendez-Laing looks dangerous, rest look a bit meh but I haven’t watched them much. Any other good players there?

Huddersfield - Kongolo is highly rated by their fans but looked a bit shakey when I’ve seen him. Other obvious ones being Billing and Mooy. Anyone else?

Who would people take?

Are the Weed the worst ever team to stay up?

They look worse than Cardiff on their recent form (and by form I mean every game since the New Year except the one they played at Selhurst.

Bus parking against mid table teams at home, virtually no goal threat. God awful to watch.

Let’s hope they do a Huddersfield next season.

Another half and half season

Other than the 2015/16 season when we were 5th in the table at Christmas it has been our form in the second half of the season that has saved us from potential relegation:

2013/14 1st half 16 points 2nd half 29 points - total 45 points
2014/15 1st half 16 points 2nd half 32 points - total 48 points
2015/16 1st half 31 points 2nd half 11 points - total 42 points
2016/17 1st half 16 points 2nd half 25 points - total 41 points
2017/18 1st half 18 points 2nd half 26 points - total 44 points
2018/19 1st half 19 points 2nd half 27 points - total 46 points (1 game to play)

Also our away form is normally better than our home form (132 points at home and 134 points away).

Whether our pre-season preparation is to blame clearly we need to step up our game in the first half of the season. Solving the home form dilemma is another matter.

Hodgson In

Roy has done another good job with limited resources and is doing exactly what he was brought in to do which is keep Palace in the Premier League and once again we are going to finish just outside the top 10 and above many bigger clubs.

Stability is what Palace needed and that is exactly what Roy has brought to the table since he was appointed.

Any Holmesdale Fanatics care to be interviewed for a Spanish magazine?

A friend of mine from Spain, a journalist from Valencia whom I have this season converted to CPFC and is now a regular attendee, would love to write a (positive) piece about the Holmesdale Fanatics, their experience in B and how they are looking forward to being behind the goal next season, plus a chance to give their take on the controversy the move caused.

This would either be published in To view the link you have to Register or Login, or To view the link you have to Register or Login or both. Panenka is also a To view the link you have to Register or Login.

He is going to be in Holmesdale Lower E for the last match of the season but his English is not great. I won't be there unfortunately (first match I'm missing of the season, sod's law).

If there's anyone I can put him in touch with from the HF who is willing to be interviewed, photographed, etc that would be amazing. If he/she speaks Spanish that would be amazing, but if not my friend may be able to manage, OR we could arrange it for a week or so later when I'll be around (I am a fluent Spanish speaker).

That would be great. Thanks!!

Poaching other clubs gems

vendredi 3 mai 2019

A lot of people say we couldn't attract a player of Wilf's current ability but we managed to do it 4 years ago when we signed him back from Manchester United. I think even without our connection we could have attracted him.

So I wonder why the club didn't try to sign Sanchez or Lookman so we could develop them then sell them on.* I think we could have attracted Sanchez before he went to Dortmund and certainly Lookman when he left Charlton.

Don't get me wrong, I've been to Dortmund lots of times, it is a lovely city and playing in front of 80,000 each week is a big pull but he wasn't a nailed on success when he left. It was a big risk so staying in England would have been an attractive option for him.

The same can be said for Lookman. He was young so maybe would have preferred to stay close to his family in London and with our reputation for giving youth a chance he would have had more chance than at Everton.

It isn't just those two players, we've missed out on other players too such as Antonio when he went from Nottingham Forest to West Ham.

It can't be that the club doesn't want to spend money on youth when we have thrown silly money around on players like Jach, Sorloth and a loan deal for Rakip. They seem to have been complete stabs in the dark.

I would feel safer taking an £8m (£16m with add ons) punt on a Championship striker than Sorloth from the Danish league, especially as that club signed him for £600k six months earlier.

Maybe the club should throw caution to the wind and spend the money we saved last summer on some lower league youth and some scout reports. Hell, I'll donate my copy of Football Manager 2018 to Freedman as I don't play it any more.

* I am aware that not all transfer attempts are made public and we might have enquired about these players and others.
