I hate to be that person starting a thread about staying up after one good result, but I'm filled with this strange feeling of positivity after Saturday.
Re-watching the highlights, it strikes me what a good nucleus we have when everyone is fit. So IF we do stay up, & IF we do keep hold of Wilf & IF we manage to keep hold of a few out of contract players, we should be left with the following:
(Those in bold out of contract)
Goalkeepers
Guaita
Hennessey
Speroni
Defenders
Ward
Wan-Bissaka
Tomkins
Sakho
Dann
Kelly
PvA
Schlupp
Midfielders
Luka
McArthur
Cabaye
Riedewald
Townsend
Zaha
Sako
Strikers
Benteke
Sorloth
Wickham
Obviously, there's a bit of worry over centre mid should Jimmy & Yohan leave. We also need another striker at least - Benteke could be on the move in the summer anyway as he doesn't really strike me as a Roy player.
Our problem over the past few seasons hasn't been the quality of the starting XI, it's been the lack of depth when we do get a couple of injuries. Should the board finally address this & back the manager sufficiently to give him suitable cover in every position then we really would be on for a top 10 finish under Roy.
I'm expecting to get shot down in flames here as there's still a high likelihood we can go down & I'd look a real prat after posting this. But after weeks of negativity, Saturday does seem to have given some hope & it does seem like it's not necessarily doom & gloom going forward.
