The increasingly misguided and petty stuff marringnthe experience at at Selhurst

lundi 6 février 2017

I haven't mentioned this before as it happened the afternoon my mate Chocky died, so to be honest it was of no consequence that day, but, I have to say that the whole premier league experience has become a bit shit of late. The silly t shirt firing, pandering to the away fans, the flashing lights etc., and, before the Everton game my wife, who has been a season ticket holder for years, was stopped by the stewards for daring to take in a sealed cup of coffee she had just bought from Sainsbury's - something she has done pretty much before every home game certainly this season and possible even last.

Anyway, she was told the rules have changed and taken round the corner by a steward and shown a small sign about no food or drink from outside, or words to that effect. While this was happening our son had already gone into the ground, so was inside the stadium unsupervised. (I should add that for the Everton game, despite having a season ticket I stayed at home with our younger son, who also has a season ticket, as he didn't want to go - can you blame him?). So my wife says that the sign is in a place where no one can see it and how was she to know the rules have suddenly changed when she has been buying a coffee before every home game and there's never been a problem. "You might put alcohol in it" was the reply. As if she would want to go to a match hammered in charge of a junior.

By this time she was getting increasingly f***ed off with proceedings pointing out that her son was inside unsupervised. She asked to speak to a senior steward. So this lady steward comes across, my wife explains that she is a season ticket holder and it's never been a problem before and the steward, rather than opting for any form of customer service that might calm the situation, says "Well, I've been on the gate at every home game and I've never seen you before". Talk about red rag to a bull! My wife was furious, and so was I when she told me the day after (we were both too upset to even discuss Palace on the Saturday after we got the terrible news about Chocky).

Only because she kept saying that her son was in the ground unsupervised did they finally relent and let her in. Had she been on her own no doubt they would have made her drink the coffee in front of them before allowing her in.

What the f**k has become of the place? Increasingly petty little regulations with seemingly no flexibility or individual judgment allowed? Accusations that my wife hasn't been to Palace before this season? Had we not been so devastated about news away from Selhurst, I would definitely have taken it up with the club.
