I am picking out this one moment, not because I want to scapegoat one player, but because it just raises the question for me - what can lead to a player doing something like that?
Is it the manager? The previous manager? Nerves? A player losing his head? What? I just can't fathom it.
As the cross is coming in, Ward is close to Carroll, it is his man and he is the only West Ham player anywhere near. But he then decides to move forwards in to space already occupied by two Palace players and a space that has no West Ham players at all!!!
What on earth is he thinking? He's not an idiot and I'm sure he wants to do well, he can defend well and often has, so what causes such a moment of insanity?
It allows Carroll time and space to unleash a wonderful strike but he is completely unchallenged. If Ward does anything to challenge him, that doesn't happen.
So, what is it that has led to so many players making so many basic, individual errors? This is not meant to be anti-Joel Ward thread or a Joel Ward is crap thread. But what can Allardyce do about it?
