It's time for radical change on the pitch, and in the stands

dimanche 15 janvier 2017

We need change in two areas. Firstly on the pitch but, equally importantly, in the stands. Whilst I am aware that the two are linked, we need to do what we can.

Change on the pitch

Whilst I don't think performances have been as bad as some are making out (from the limited view I had 100m away from the pitch we were the better team vs West Ham until they scored for example) we need change. Drastic change. We should use the Bolton game to switch to 3 at the back, and wing backs. It can't be any worse, and it will suit the best XI we have at our disposal. We have nothing to lose. We should make big changes to the team. We need players out there who can run around and who can put their foot in so that they can energise their teammates. Whilst we will miss the spark that Wilf gives us, we need to get the best out of our quality players. I agree with Brummie Allen - I'd drop Puncheon. I don't think he was particularly bad vs West Ham, but he is the reason we are slow and ponderous in possession. I'd get rid of Ledley for the same reason. We need players who can move, and players who can put their foot in. Bolton at home is a great place to start. They will provide a threat, but a confidence-boosting win before our crunch game vs Everton would give the whole club a boost.

Change off the pitch
We need to stop digging out the players, especially our best players who have the quality when on form. I'm sick of hearing criticism of our most talented guys out there. We need to encourage them, not moan. Townsend for example has borne the brunt of it. He is not the most physical, certainly when compared to the likes of Bolasie and Wilf. But he has genuine quality. He got their guy booked with a lovely turn which created the chance for Tomkins. He put in some dangerous crosses. He will get out-muscled but he will also create. He is a confidence player. He needs support more than anyone else. Also, Benteke. He is a £40m striker. The reason he was sold by Klopp is because he doesn't work hard in closing down. I'd like him to improve in this area. But he is the best centre forward we've ever had. We need to get support close to him (Remy will help massively), and get dangerous balls into the box, because he will score if we do.

But more than not digging out our most talented, we need to get behind the team and cheer them to the rafters. We need a siege mentality vs Everton. They are our boys. We need to back their every touch, tackle and header. The players need us more than ever. If we deliver they have the quality to produce. COYP.
