As we look forward to the fourth round, no doubt many of us will once again expect Palace to be drawn 'away to someone tough and grim in our own division'. After just such a game today, I thought I'd look back at how often this actually happens and, surprise surprise, we really have had some shit draws. But not just recently, oh no... Here's a quick guide to 50 years of Palace's third round 'luck' (actually 51 rounds since 1966).
We've only had one home tie in this round in the last nine seasons (and even then we had to travel for the replay) and only three home draws this century. Only once in the last nine seasons have we been drawn to a team at a lower level (Dover last year) although normal service was quickly resumed with an away 4th round all-Prem away tie.
Our toughest period was between 1999 and 2005 when we were drawn away seven times in succession including twice at Newcastle, twice at Sunderland, once at Spurs and got 'giant-killed' by Cambridge United while most of the travelling support sat on the M25, closely followed by a five year period from 2008 when we made instant cup exits to fellow Championship teams.
If you include half a dozen replays, Palace have played away from home in 37 of the last 50 FA Cup third rounds. 2006 and 2007 are the only seasons in the last 30 years when we havent had to play at least one away tie at some stage of the competition.
