Hi,
I know stats seem to drive people a bit crazy and so rather than simply add this to the main review thread I thought I would give it's own corner where it can be ignored by those that don't like them.
Not sure I will stick to it as a lot to do this week but I thought over the next couple of days I would grab some time to work through the stats to see what they say and how they compare to the 'eye' and I will jot down the thoughts here. Be good if anyone else spots things to do the same on here?
Thought I would start with the Palace team ordered by Performance score. Always a bit subjective because of the relative weightings so maybe not the best to start with but that's why the post is here and not in the main thread.
52 - Puncheon
51 - Cabaye
39 - Delaney
38 - Souare
36 - McArthur
33 - Mutch
32 - Zaha
22 - Dann
11 - Ward
4 - Bolasie
2 - Wickham
-2 - Jedinak
-10 - McCarthy
-16 - Murray
Early thoughts.
By definition Bolasie, Wickham and Jedinak tend to score lower having had cameos anyway and a per 90 min version makes less sense here.
The relative order doesn't look too barmy to me. Watching 'live' but on a screen I was really impressed by Souare and probably would have picked him then if pushed at the final whistle. But having watched extended etc. stuff I think Puncheon was the best player throughout the match. If I am totally honest if I had written it out from my head I would have had Wilf and Delaney swapped in terms of their positions in the list. I think that will be partly because I am as beguiled by Wilf's dribbling as the defenders but in the cold analytic light of day his wizardy was contributing to approach play more than chances. I haven't had time to get lower into the stats to see where they each score the points TBH. The good news I think is everyone put in a solid performance really.
I took a quick look at McCarthy's distribution and I am not sure if the figures are wrong but they give him 0% for throw-outs which sounds odd. I have emailed them to check it as some other keepers' distributions stats looked odd too. The interesting thing is that he came second in terms of ave length of his pass (53M) if you scan the list the ave length is inversely proportional to the accuracy - not much of a surprise really. But wonder if he is 'trying too hard' and perhaps needs to dial it down a bit. Watching him on the few occasions so far he looks quite uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.
Anyway - off to do'stuff now' - thought I would give the 'stats corner' a go without annoying the rest albeit I might be chatting to myself :) Wil post some more stuff later
