It’s difficult to find a sense of perspective after a game like yesterday’s, but I thought I’d look back to see how we’ve stood up across the full 18 games to date. Here’s my summary:
Arsenal L – conceded a late goal, but probably didn’t deserve the point
West Ham L – abject performance
Newcastle D – scored a late, late equaliser, but a defeat would have been an injustice
Burnley D – couldn’t find a goal, Speroni’s late penalty save got us the draw
Everton W – probably the only game this season we have been a bit lucky with the goals, albeit in a very good performance
Leicester W – a deserved win
Hull L – awful second half cost us
Chelsea L – well beaten, but could it have been different if we had been given the early penalty?
West Brom D – a game we should have won
Sunderland L – pretty even up to 79 mins, but they went on to win it
Man Utd L – not at the races at all
Liverpool W – best performance of the season
Swansea D – we came back to get a deserved point
Aston Villa L – we huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a goal
Spurs D – we were by far the better team and deserved to win
Stoke D – they got a somewhat fortunate equaliser, just huff and puff thereafter
Man City L – played well first half, blown away second half
Southampton L – very poor
I look through that and I count:
4 matches that we got nothing out of and we were never realistically likely to (Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea)
3 really poor performances (West Ham, Hull (second half), Southampton)
4 matches where we got the points we deserved (Newcastle, Leicester, Liverpool, Swansea)
Then
4 homes matches where we weren’t a million miles off – and in which a decent centre forward would have made all the difference – but ultimately only accumulated two points (Burnley, Sunderland, Villa, Stoke)
2 games where we were unlucky to come away with only a draw (West Brom, Spurs)
1 game where we were perhaps a bit lucky to win (or maybe not, I can’t decide) (Everton)
That adds up to 15 points. But I think you could argue that the performances might have been worth more like 16-20 points?
This, of course, doesn’t change the fact that we can all see some quite alarming problems developing all across the pitch. But perhaps it means that it isn’t completely impossible to turn things around?
