Having looked at Speroni's stats in some detail on the Speroni thread I thought it only fair to take a look at the other players in the squad to see how they compare too. It will take a while to do it as thoroughly but I thought it worth opening a thread with some initial comment and then add to it over the coming week or so. To repeat the caveat that stats are numbers, not conclusions and require interpretation and any assumptions arising require validation. Taking one stat in isolation is normally a great way to reach the wrong conclusion. But it's interesting nonetheless.
The Speroni stats showed a marked shortfall vs last season. This seems harsh in the numbers but does reflect the deterioration I had noticed. Comparison with the other Premier keepers and perhaps more to the point his own form last year is not so good. So what about the rest.
Well in terms of overall performance score (averaged out to a per game figure to make a fair comparison) only Jedinak and Bolasie have improved their 'performance' score. This passes the 'what I see test' for me personally. Jedinak has improved, adding goals and flashes of inspired and improved passing even. Bolasie is obviously better too. The rest, not so much. It might be worth pointing out that out of our top 10 ave performance scores this year, only 5 were here both years. 3 of them are new (BH, JM, WZ) and 2 are on loan (SO'K, JW).
Ledley is scoring pretty much the same.
Speroni shows the biggest drop in ave performance (-22.7) but Dann has dropped 17.3, Delaney and Mariappa over 12 and Chamakh over 8 and Gayle 3.
I havent finished looking at that but these are from taking the top 15 (ish) of each year as a starter.
Does this feel 'roughly right' - I think it does. Dann gets a lot of praise on here (rightly so) but he has been involved in more 'slips' than the Villa one.
re the new guys - Hangeland has the best score moving into third position in our team behind Ledley and in front of Williams (cue uproar but it is just 2 games) and McArthur.
Sorry this is a bit rushed but I thought better to dump what I discover as I go. :)
