Which kind of fan are you?

Older and possibly wiser
This is a group who have supported the club for several decades. By and large you’re pretty amazed that we’ve spend this long in the top division having witnessed multiple seasons in the second tier and are just hoping that we win a cup competition at some stage of your lifetime and failing that just happy to be doing better than Brighton. You’re fairly level headed and generally accept that we’ll be pretty consistent, have the odd good win and the odd bad defeat but it probably won’t totally ruin your Saturday night whatever.

Glass half full
On your way to being part of the ‘Older’ group and much happier to be paying the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea rather than Brentford and Rotherham. Fairly satisfied to be holding our own in the top division but would like to see some more attacking and exciting football. You’re fairly consistent in your praise or condemnation of players and management.

Glass half empty
Probably of similar age to the ‘half full’ group but you’ve chosen to by and large forget how dire we’ve been at times and that having a player who’d played international football at any level was quite rare rather than being par for the course. You see your job as one of showering players and management with praise after a win and absolutely slaughtering the same people a game later when we lose.

The Premier League generation
This group are probably in their teens or early twenties. They’ve not really known supporting the club outside the top division and what is was like to be quite excited when you signed a striker on loan from Sunderland. Pandemic aside, you probably don’t actually go and watch the team that often but fully reserve the right, usually during a game, (why actually watch when you can be online posting to like-minded PLGs), to criticise players, manager, coach, Chairman, Director of Football, tactics, training methods, facilities, medical staff who can’t cure injured players with Messiah like speed and anyone else you can think of. You really can’t fathom why the club don’t spend at least 100 million in every transfer window, but fully reserve the right to slaughter a player, endorsed by yourself and bought for millions, if he doesn’t immediately perform like a world beater as that will be totally down to Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman. You will have no perception of the fact that the club has been close to going bust on a number of occasions.

The Next Generation
You will be young and despite all the odds and your mates at school supporting clubs that are several hundred miles away, that they’ll probably never visit, you’ve decided that Palace are the ones for you. You like being able to watch your local team play the best in the country and are generally pleased that they can be competitive and hold their own. You should be warned that you are in a honeymoon period and will soon become one of the above.
