Charity Shield 1961 - Johnny Byrne

mercredi 7 août 2019

Did anyone else see the short article in the Daily Mail Verdict about the Charity/Community Shield? In 1961 the match was between double-winners Tottenham and an FA Select X1. This team included four future members of England's World Cup winning squad and was as follows - Ron Springett, Jimmy Armfield, Michael McNeil, Bobby Robson, Peter Swan, Ron Flowers, Bryan Douglas, Jimmy Robson, Johhny Haynes, Bobby Charlton and at centre forward Johnny Byrne. Some great names there.
What was surprising was the the previous season we had played in Division 4, coming second under the management of Arthur Rowe - a legendary man. Johnny Byrnes had scored 30 goals, Roy Summersby 25 and the immortal Ron Heckman 16 from the wing.
Football was different then but even so for a 4th Division player to get into that team was quite an achievement. Unfortunately as those of you as old or even older than myself will know he was sold next year to West Ham for a then record fee of £65000.
