car fires in France

I passed new year in Perpignan and saw some cars burnt out. After, watching the news it seems to be a tradition here to burn cars on holidays like Bastille day or new year's eve. There were over a thousand burnt during the night (in all France)
Just a heads up as I don't think it's widely known outside France. I found nothing on the BBC about it.
