False memory

samedi 12 août 2017

I was talking to BUBBS11 yesterday and we were both being nostalgic about the old pre internet/teletext days and how sometimes it would not be until the next morning you would find out the Palace score. We then talked about the old 'pink' regional papers that would be rushed out to hits the stands at around 6PM on a Saturday which contained all the football scores. I mentioned the London Evening Standard edition of this. I even have a vague memory of cycling down to the Chilham Way shops in Hayes (do they still exist) to buy my copy.

However doing an internet search I can find no reference to a sporting pink newspaper being produced in London, only the regional ones. I am now convinced I have made this up in my head and confused my buying the Manchester Evening News version as an 18 year old when I moved up there.

I also always remembered the infamous John Sewell/Gary Sprake own goal against Leeds as Sewell launching a long aimless ball into the box from wide out and just over the halfway line, and Sprake attempting to catch the ball near the penalty box. A clip of the goal shows me how wrong my memory is.

What examples do you have of your own false memory.
