Shane McGowan RIP

Just hearing that the Pogues legend has passed away. 😢

And yes, I am aware my phone changed MacGowan to McGowan.

Jimmy Corkhill RIP

Probably the most famous scouser of all time has passed away :(

Henry Kissinger Dies Aged 100

mercredi 29 novembre 2023

A somewhat divisive figure at times but certainly an important figure in diplomacy and American foreign policy.

RIP.

Watching Leeds v Swansea

Watching the game now Yanick has just come on and the Swansea fans haven’t stopped singing the heart beat tune to his name, I wouldn’t have thought they knew it, but it’s bringing back some good memories.

Rob Holding - back to Arsenal on a free ?

I have just been told by a reliable source that Rob Holding is going back to Arsenal on a free in January if true seems a good use of £2m

Suggestion: Kyle Walker-Peters

He has continued his good form of the last few years in the Championship this season. He was linked with some big clubs a few years ago but oddly didn't appear to be linked to anyone in the summer after Soton's relegation.

He can play both full back positions and would be a significant upgrade on Ward, Mitchell and Clyne imo. Not sure how much he'd cost but I think he'd be a really good signing.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 3* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 7 or more, then a 4th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Var poll

mardi 28 novembre 2023

With the news that they are looking at increasing Var’s reach
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Along with all the controversy recently if you had a simple keep or bin choice what would you vote for and why

Sin Bins

So, the powers that be, in their infinite wisdom have come up with more tinkering with the game.

Many 'innovations' brought into the game recently have been total failures, VAR, endless handball rule changes, adding on ten+ minutes of injury time for a few weeks of the season before going back to normal, etc.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

What do we think of sin bins? Stupid idea? My take is that if the existing rules are properly enforced, we don't need another complication like this.

Has Sunak lost his marbles?

To view the link you have to Register or Login

The UK doesn't need new legislation to loan back the marbles to Greece, and we get a lot of new reciprocal ancient stuff on loan from them too, to view in the British Museum.

What a petty little man Sunak is, thinking this is a safe bit of pandering to his right and nationalism, without the fear of criticism.

It ain’t all doom and gloom is it?

Don’t get me wrong I was fuming Saturday after the final whistle. Did I see it coming yeah probably didn’t to be fair! When we don’t score early we tend to lose momentum in games. Should we have gone on to still lose after that worldie from Olise. No I don’t think so. Can just about call their winner against the fun of play at the time.

I get people are angry and it’s fairly embarrassing (no disrespect to Luton) but to be the first it will go down in the history books.

What we can’t compensate for is losing both Eze and Cheik to injuries so early in the second half. I don’t know if we would have still gone on to lose had they both still been on the pitch, will never know what might have happened. Think a point at the very least would have been expected by most of us.

We’ve not had that bad a start to the season and considering I think it’s now lost 3 of the last 4 were not down at the bottom and should be comfortable come the end of the season.

Yes we should have got a couple more players during the summer and at times some of the players are frustrating to watch but it really isn’t as bad as some make out on here!

It’s easy to get pissed off and upset (ruins my weekends when we lose and can’t even watch the highlights) but it’s our club and let’s face it win lose or draw there isn’t another place any of us would rather be on a match day then watching our boys even when they have games where they aren’t on top form!

Happy Monday 🙌🏽

Well done Luton

samedi 25 novembre 2023

Congrats to the hatters on their first win in premier

In terms of dealing with adversity what a remarkable story! and good day for the underdogs and proving that you don’t need to jiz billions to compete.

Typical reactionary response to the defeat on twitter. Entitlement is pretty ugly eh?

Win at Man Utd/ lose at Luton. Prefer it the other way round, Where everything is so predictable ? But Man U expect to win too. Look at Chelsea and their billion spent. Is that ambition?

We need a new right back, a midfielder, a striker, a new manager

Keep it going, Santa will be here with his sack soon…..

That Olise Goal

A bit of positivity, because after that boy does this place need it.

What a goal that was! This is why this boy can go to the absolute top and is the difference between him and Wilf as to why a mega club didn't come in. Scoring goals like that on top of his general ability is the kind of thing that gets you to the summit.

Must end up goal of the month and should be in the running for goal of the season.

Opening Titles

It used to be (and still is on terrestrial) that we had to watch them. And then Netflix, followed by others, learned that many people disliked this and they introduced the Skip Intro function, for which many times I am very grateful.

But some opening title sequences remain wonderful. I for instance am totally gripped by those of Succession, which (for me at least) amplify the characters and the story in a hugely entertaining way. So I always watch them.

Are there any other must-watch title seque4nces out there?

60 years ago today JFK assassinated

Where were you when you heard the news ? One of those moments in history which remains ingrained in peoples minds who were alive at the time.

It was a Friday evening, just switched the TV on to watch Harry Worth. The old BBC globe just went around & around. Then one of the announcers voice broke in to announce the President Kennedy had been assassinated. My mum burst into tears.

I guess the world changed that day for so many reasons. Who knows how the 60's and years since would have panned out had Kennedy lived and probably served a second term as president. Would Bobby Kennedy then become president in 1968 to further the dynasty?

Sunderland Milk Cup 1984 footage anyone?

dimanche 19 novembre 2023

This is a long shot, but would anyone still have a recording of our Milk Cup highlights at home against Sunderland on Oct 10th 1984?

It was featured on ITV’s Midweek Sports Special. I had a recording of it but seemed to have lost it over time.

The away leg goals are on YouTube, but it’s the home leg I’d love a copy of. It was a boring 0-0, but it was the last time Palace were featured at Selhurst on either BBC or ITV for nearly 4 years.

Would love a copy for one of my many Palace YouTube projects. If someone still has it, or knows someone that might, please let me know - would really appreciate it.

Dissertation support - run a cafe north of the river?

People. This wonderful community helped when quite a few of you completed a survey to help with my son's geography A levels a few years back.

Now, that same son is doing a dissertation for his geography degree - at Liverpool Uni - on the impacts of home working on cafes and coffee shops near train stations. Ideally, he wants people that run cafes or coffee shops in
and around Hertfordshire - which I know isn't natural Palace territory, but it is where we live!

Does anyone know someone who runs such an establishment that could spare 20 minutes with him so he can ask some questions via zoom? If so, please DM me here or on Twitter @Hans_honkyhosen (yes, that's me!). Many thanks to anyone who can help!

vendredi 17 novembre 2023

Got my tickets today. Where are we drinking?

Rumour: Thijs Dallinga

Premier League trio Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Brentford are tracking Toulouse striker Thijs Dallinga.

Tickets over the xmas period (Brighton?)

I live in Switzerland but will be over to the UK for Xmas. I have a young family member and his father have expressed an interest in attending a game.

If I signed up for international membership, would I be able to purchase tickets for the Brighton match still? Would need 4 tickets in total. Difficult to tell on the website if it is already sold out before purchasing the membership.

Surprised these aren't on sale yet?
Or guess not...

VAR

Couldn’t find a previous thread on this but surely must exist?

What was the deal with Edouard goal yesterday, he was clearly onside and it took about 5 minutes to give the goal, what a joke.

Eze second penalty should have been given, clearly taken out and hard to find an argument that he isn’t fouled.

I really do think the time taken to make decisions is ruining the game for fans in the stadium. Nearly killed me waiting for Eddy’s goal to be given yesterday despite it being clearly inside.

Offsides need to be automated as they were in the WC with a sensor in the ball.

Had enough of it!

MOTD not show the 1861 crest - or should we change palace ink to make 1861 visible

samedi 11 novembre 2023

So in the MOTD day.......23mins 28seconds in
BBC iPlayer

Palace Eagle crest

and

Everton Shield (with 1878) on it

where is the new Palace Eagle logo with 1861 - it is not visible.

Well Played Everton. One of those teams that turn up and fight to the end.

Is our crest too grey to see the 1861 year?

HF and council anyone know?

Just wondered what the HF message was about today with the council. I noticed they disappeared for the first half before returning as usual in the second half.
Someone must know the reason.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Everton (h) 11/11/23 2-3 L

Poll incoming.

Negative tactics costing us!

So apparently I seem to be in the minority that thought we were overall dreadful today.

My brother and apparently a handful of others seem to think we played well?

If ever there was a case for performances being subjective!

Anyhow, one fact that I cannot stand is just sitting deep and playing defensive football inviting pressure from the off.

All 3 goals were preventable, our passing was sloppy, but throughout the team there was no energy, no width, no running or providing an option and I've seem more urgency at a flipping funeral!

I just don't understand how we can play so negative. Every single throw-in, it's Mitchell passing it backwards and it's back with Johnstone within seconds. Likewise, every free kick we get, we seem to be allergic to passing it forwards. We must waste 20 mins per game doing sideways passing. Any other team would send players into the box and cross it to see what happens. Whereas winning a FK never has any territorial advantage to us whatsoever and we normally end up panicking and in trouble within seconds!

Our only urgency came after conceding 3 times. It's unacceptable that we're just so negative. We have the players. Why didn't Olise come on at HT or at least earlier than he did? Why didn't Franca come on instead of Ahamada at the end, when we're already losing 3-2?! And Doucoure has the most interceptions in Europe last season. Why on earth we didn't bring him on when we clearly needed more muscle in the middle, is beyond me.

3 points wasted. Everton deserved it cos there was only one team trying today. We were 2nd best throughout and very disappointing.

I sure as hell don't know what we do in training, but this was absolutely dire.

It would just be nice if we had a manager that set out a team to at least TRY to show ambition and win!

The Beatles Final Single - "Now and Then"

A fitting finale by the greatest band ever likely to grace this planet.

Number 1 on the American billboard Chart 10 hours after it was released, and it will be the Beatles 18th Number 1 here.

I heard the John Lennon demo of the song sometime ago and never thought it would see the light of day as a single. Lennon's voice and his piano were too indistinct and there was a hiss on the audio. it was only a demo after all.

Paul, George and Ringo tried to make something of it in the mid 1990's but gave up.

However, due to the wonders of modern technology, Peter Jackson and his team extracted voice and piano from the original demo and Paul and Ringo added a few bits of Beatle magic. Giles Martin, Son of George Martin the Beatles producer and Jeff Lynne (ELO) were also involved . The illusion created of all 4 Beatles reunited for the final time on screen is a tearjerker.

Lo and behold we now have another great Beatles song to add to their catalogue.

At first, I thought it is very catchy and of course will do well, but the more you listen to it, it grows on you.

When I saw the accompanying video it just blew me away and I get overwhelmed whenever I watch it and listen to the song. Maybe it is because I was there in the 1960's when the Beatles meant so much more to Society than their music, they literally changed popular culture in many ways. However, many younger people also seem to "get it" " as far as the importance of the song and the importance of the "Fab Four" to the World is concerned.

Just Listen to this!

Quote:

Palace eye Brazilian defender

Crystal Palace are monitoring Botafogo’s Brazilian full-back Nathan Mendes. And there could be an interesting tie-up involving American businessman John Textor who is one of the co-owners at Palace and also owns Brazilian club Botafogo.

*Sao Paolo wanted to sign Mendes but Botafogo do not want to sell to a direct rival and want to flog him to an English club. Textor already has the inside track on the 21-year-old and can share the information.

Temporary ban of PL loans between multi-run clubs?

mercredi 8 novembre 2023

I can’t pretend to know THAT much on the subject, but it looks like Premier League clubs are voting on 21st November on whether or not to ban incoming loans from clubs that are owned by the same owners as themselves.

On the face of it, it seems to be in response to reports that Newcastle will be bringing in Neves back from the Saudi League on loan, to cover for the loss of Sandro Tonali. I imagine the implications will be that Newcastle in theory pay any financial package for the loan to potentially avoid FFP restrictions.

The reason I post it in the Palace forum is that this vote has a direct impact on Palace considering our links to RWDM, Botofago, Lyon and to a lesser extent all the clubs that Harris and Blitzer also own (which is quite a lot!). It’ll be interesting to see how the club vote, even if it’s unlikely we’ll decide to take on any loans from those clubs.

The PL need 14 out of 20 clubs to vote in favour of the temporary ban (until they come up with a permanent resolution, apparently). Arsenal, Brentford, Brighton, ourselves, Man City, Newcastle, Forest, and West Ham all have owners with stakes in at least one other club in world football.

Interested to hear other peoples views.

Jose Fonte

Fonte is playing in the Champion's League tonight.. for Braga!! Aged 39 and still going strong.!!!one of Palace's best ever central defenders - way back when !!

Crystal Palace Supporters Trust closes

mardi 7 novembre 2023

Crystal Palace Supporters Trust have posted their farewell message, although it’s dated December last year it was actually posted today and has current info in it.

Over the years the Trust has worked hard for Palace fans and it is sad that it has finally come to an end. I would personally like to thank everyone who has been involved over the years for their work to keep Palace fans voices heard in some of the most difficult times in our history

Probate, inheritance questions! Help needed please

Following a bereavement, we have been left property and some savings. Which is of course fantastic but we didn't realise the process to inherit was so complicated.

We've tentatively decided on using specialist form to sort the probate and inheritance but their terms say they will take control of all the estate assets in an account set up for that purpose. Is this right and standard practice.

They will calculate the inheritance tax and do the paperwork. Etc.

From what I can make out if the house is sold the proceeds would similarly go to their account that's been set up before being transferred to us. Again is that right?

Or they can introduce us to a convetancer to transfer house to our name. Is that how it normally works?

Anyone had good experiences and can recommend any solicitors etc.

British gas smart meter upgrade? Good or bad

Has a letter saying we need to have our smart meter upgraded. Is this a good idea?

Will bills be likely to be lower or higher if we get it done? Is it obligatory?

Suggested Team and Formation For: Everton (h) 11/11/23

dimanche 5 novembre 2023

Johnstone
Ward - Andersen - Guehi - Mitchell
Doucoure - Lerma
Ayew - Eze - Schlupp
Edouard

Matthews, Clyne, Richards, Holding, Hughes, Ahamada, Olise, Franca, Mateta

Would almost be tempted to play Ahamada ahead of Edouard, play Ayew up top and Ahamada out wide.

Always love bringing this one up .....and another year has passed.

51 years ago today … thats 51!! … Don Roger's debut on November 4th at home against Everton.

I can still remember it as though it was yesterday .. yet cant remember what my wife asked me to do yesterday.

On 23 minutes, Rogers broke away from inside his own half, racing onto a through ball from John Craven, as England fullback Henry Newton chased in vain, Don coolly chipped Everton goalkeeper David Lawson into the Whitehorse Lane goal.

Sir Don ... the reason for my ridiculous 51 year rollercoaster ride ..

Text, Texts or Texted?

A question for the BBS grammar police...

"I sent you a text"... sounds good to me.

"I sent you multiple texts"... Sounds good to me.

"I've texted you multiple time"... Just sounds wrong.

I think "text" should be treated like the word "sheep". Good for singular and plural.

Watched a few interviews lately where the person said "Texted". It sounds so wrong.

"I text you multiple time" sounds so much better.

Thoughts?

Quote:

The King's English and Cockney are no longer common dialects among young people in the South East of England, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Essex studied the dialects of a group of 18 to 33-year-olds in the region.

They identified three voices, estuary English, southern British English and multicultural London English.

So it's official, "cockney" is disappearing (in this case the BBC are referring to the entire South East as "cockney")

Personally, I can't stand that inner city trendy accent, saying "Like" as "Laaaak", I don't get how that has even appeared aside an effort to not speak with a traditional London accent, and it sounds just ridiculous and non regional.
