Moral Maze Problem

dimanche 19 décembre 2021

Recently a distant but long standing friend died in his late 60's. I sent condolences and was considering whether to attend the funeral. Yesterday I received an email with details of what had happened - which was very sad and at the end his widow has said

"a friend has set up a go fund me page so we can give X a great send off. Can you share the page and please donate even if it is only a small amount. Thanks xx"

Now I happen to know that the deceased was fairly well off and his two grown up children are both doing very well. Without being unfeeling the family would not have any problem paying for the funeral. While I would certainly be happy to donate if he had not left much or they were likely to suffer hardship I'm not sure about this. Am I being mean or should they not presume upon people when they could well afford to pay - and what about asking me to share the page? Is there is a difference between spontaneously giving money and being asked to fork out? Other people opinions would be welcome.
